“Perfect for conference, fantastic staff, good value”
Reviewed 28 August 2010

The Villa Colonial is build up like a small village with a small street and two stories houses painted in a guatemalan colour palette and with colourful flowers hanging and growing all over. Beautiful garden and perfect restaurant area with view over the garden. Incredible staff, very attentive in all ways. ( About 50 rooms, but doe not feel like there are many guests).

Rooms are spacious enough, rustic style with furniture in dark wood with nice carvings. Beds are a bit on the hard and short side, and my feet were sticking out of the bed. There is Internet ( may be slightly unstable, but worked almost always), the television is placed in a comfortable height on the desk in front of bed (not in the roof corner as in many hotel rooms), the water in the shower is hot and good and bathroom spacious. A very simple, but ok hairdryer in the room

The weather in August mens sunny or cloudy days with rain in afternoons. Textiles in rooms may feel a little humid. It can get cold, I recommend that you should ask for an extra blanket (or two, as I did). Also, although I like being eco conscious and perhaps use my towels twice, I do not recommend it here as wet textile does not dry well or at all.

The location can be either good or bad depending on what you like. It's perfect for conference as it's located just outside town. Gets people to stay on the premises and get to know each other more, but difficult to take a break in the town center if you only have one hour break. Also, if you like it quiet, and don't have to go out every night, it's a god place. However, after dark, a taxi may be recommended.

Takes only 5-10 min. to walk to the centre, which for me is just a nice walk. But if you carry stuff, have trouble walking, taxi is recommended. (From the center to hotel, you can get a cab for 25/30 quetzals).

I had planned to shift the hotel after the conference to stay on, but when checking other hotels for rooms available (my favorite place did not have rooms available), I felt that many of other hotel rooms too small and expensive, too noisy or too full of backpackers or not so good value. Besides. I had come to like this place, despite the short and hard bed, and staff were so great, so I decided just to stay here.

Family friendly as children will have plenty of place to run around.

And you must have "the antigüeña" for breakfast!

We loved every moment of our stay here. The gardens are beautiful and while the rooms are not large they are clean and tranquil. The pool is small but clean.
The food was excellent as was the service and we finished up eating in the beautiful open-sided restaurant every night.
All the staff are fantastic and looked after us very well. The night staff (we arrived quite late on the first night) spoke little English but could not have been more helpful.
It is a pleasant and safe walk to the town which is beautiful.
The only problem was – we should have stayed a week longer!

Beautiful spanish style with lovely dining area and grounds/courtyards. The front desk people, Guadolupo Hernandez and Eymond Garcia were so very gracious and helpful in everything we asked of them. The rooms were small, but very quaint. Loved it!

Fairly new construction in keeping with the architectural style of the old city does not look or feel like a hotel. Clean and quiet, very competently managed and part of a chain of hotels including Tikal and Lake Atitlan. The hotel in Tikal was good enough to host the President of Chile during her state visit two days after we left the site - justifiably so.

Beautiful, quiet, great service and food. Located out of the central tourist area, it's a fairly long walk or a short pleasant cab ride. Beautiful buildings and cobblestone paths, you'll feel like you're in your own little secluded villa. Great food at the restaurant, especially the breakfast buffet. I'm biased, I had my wedding reception here, but only because we found it so comfy and bright on previous stays!

This hotel looks marvellous and this time looks are not deceving. It's built in colonial fashion with brightly coloured rooms and a big garden in the middle. The rooms are spacey and clean. The staff is friendly and helpful. There is an inexpensive internet service. The restaurant serves great food.
The only possible drawback is the location: a 15 minute walk from the city centre, but don't let that deter you.

We arrived around 23.00 hours to find the hotel in darkness, the night porter (who spoke no English but was very aimable) appeared, he had clearly not been informed of our expected arrival, but we were given a lovely room. The nights are cold in Antigua in February & we found only 1 blanket & 1 cover on our bed - however we managed to communicate with our friendly porter the problem & he produced some blankets.

The hotel is beautiful, the attention to detail of the buildings is amazing & our room which was close to the pool area, overlooked the garden & was quiet. The dining area was opened sided on the garden side - very pleasant. Breakfast was fine & they will cook fresh the scrambled eggs if you ask; we don't as a rule take dinner at hotels, preferring to go to restaurants in town.

The hotel is more suited to groups, who have their own transport, whilst we enjoy walking, it is a good 15 mins to the Parque Central and the pavements & roads are cobbled - not easy. At dark a taxi is required/ recommended. On balance we would have preferred to be more central and as such I think the hotels is more suited to groups. Having said that, the hotel has much to recommend it.
