“One of the best party places in Eastern Europe”
Reviewed 12 July 2009

Ask anyone from Moscow to Kiev what's the most happening place in summer? They will say Odessa, meaning Arkadia district of Odessa.
Plenty of nightlife for all kinds of budget, some very nice private beaches fro daytime, couple good hotels - everything you need to have the weekend of your life there.
And the best women you've ever seen. Seriously.

“Arcadia, keep your expections low and your sense of adventure high”
Reviewed 20 February 2009

In September, 2008 I stayed in Arcadia with my two friends and though we had a reasonably fun time; the lay of the land wasn't so intuitive as more traveled destinations so some words of advice might go a long way if it's your first time.

First, we stayed at the Arcadia Hotel, which had "undergone renovation." Spartan at best and Soviet at worst. The lower your expectations are the more enjoyable your stay will be. We were initially given a "no vacancy" pitch upon arriving despite having a printout of our reservations. "The girl who made those reservations doesn't work here anymore. It's not our problem." After about a half of an hour they relented and we consented knowing our additional savings could be applied elsewhere during the trip. For an additional $15-20 you can have wifi access in the lobby. The upgrade for air conditioned rooms is a must! The included breakfast is not. The women who work on each floor, "dezhurnaya" in Russian are great and proof kindness can endure such low putative wages. Oh and the best thing about the hotel is it's location to the Arcadia complex. About 5 minutes. Important: Cash only. No credit cards.

Also important: the Arcadia district is patrolled by police officers who aren't necessarily there "to serve and protect" but rather to extract indulgences from foreign tourists. Always be on your best behavior and never leave your hotel card in the hotel or you will be fined once you can't show for it. Fortunately I speak Russian so I had no problems, but a friend of mine in a stag group without any local speakers said the police encounters were so routine they just extended cash before being interrogated.

Food in the Arcadia district can really be good, especially the shashlik or what English speakers call shiskabobs. Be sure to try the fish jerky. I loved it, though my less daring American friends were repulsed. It's best to stay within the local Russian fare. There is a good sushi restaurant down the boulevard just across from Itaka. I would avoid Falcone except for drinking and people watching as the food is unremarkable in all ways except price. Vegetarians will have their faith tested.

Note, calling Arcadia a beach "resort" would be bold to most Westerners. It's more of a throwback to local Soviet vacationing and the principle that cheap is paramount. If you're expecting some kind of wild Ibiza club scene you'll be mostly disappointed as there are only a few lively places surrounded by mostly loud and vulgarly tacky music.

The top place by far in Arcadia is Ibiza Club. You can either pay as you enter (15 euros?) or you can reserve a table (about 60-80 euro I think). Reserving a table is the better option and should be done well in advance if possible. Of course your table deposit is counted as credit towards what you drink and consume. I didn't experience any problems with security but did hear some stories of small extortion (10 euros) so be cautious and well-mannered. Note also that the patrons here are very well-dressed so leave the flip flops at the hotel.

The second best club is Itaka and though it's down-market from Ibiza it's more accommodating to larger groups with more open space. You can reserve tables here but there isn't a great demand.

Just down the road is a club called Otrada Beach club which is on the younger side of Ibiza and more impressive. The best way to describe it is it's an outdoor pool party. I find it more relaxed and easier to mingle with the locals than the larger Ibiza. Unless you're from Monaco you'll never see ladies so well dressed. Absolutely unreal. The only problem is getting there. It's located near Arcadia, but the road leading to it and down the hill is a car killer so you'll have to walk about 1/2 km to get in and out but trust me, your efforts will be rewarded. There are few tables so no need to try and reserve anything. Drinks and beers are on the pricey side.

During the day, unless you enjoy toiling with the masses on beaches bordering dirty ocean water I'd recommend going to the swimming pool at the end of Arcadia's long boulevard. It's a private pool and though pricier and small, it's exceptional for people watching. This is not a place for stag groups but ideal for families and groups of 3 or 4..

Note that getting around Arcadia is best done by hailing down any driver who is willing to take you to the adjoining Odessa. If you don't speak Russian it shouldn't be too much of a problem, but fares should never exceed more than 10 euros.

Enjoy!
