A shocker. We had to stay here overnight as part of an organized tour of Croatia. We informed the tour company of how we felt about the accommodation provided by this hotel, but still feel it necessary to warn any other unsuspecting travellers of what is in store for them at the Hotel Marjan. This hotel has not had capital put in to it since it was built in the 1960s. It has some grand trappings such as a marble staircase (which rather bizarrely you cannot use to get to rooms, but instead is the only means of accessing the dining room), but behind that facade there is much that is simply not up to scratch. Our room had a neo-Stalinist decor, furnishings and fittings, the only chair in the room was broken, and the toilet flushed on a random basis. We should have discerned from the graffiti-covered exterior of the hotel and the pervading smell of diesel from the nearby fuel depot serving the boats in the marina that this was going to be a memorable stay, but for all the wrong reasons. The Cold War legacy of this hotel was not just confined to its appearance and amenities, but sadly also applied to the curt service provided by staff - some customer service training would not go astray. About the only good thing going for this hotel is its location, a harbourside one only a short, but pleasant walk to the heart of Split.
