We walked up the hill from The Riva to visit this museum. It wasn't a bad walk from town; leaving the Riva, we enjoyed the nice streets about halfway up to the museum.

But the disappointing thing was that we went on a Saturday, when the museum was scheduled to be open until 2pm (according to both web site info, and the sign inside the gate when we got there). We arrived at 12:45pm to find it locked up tight. We double-checked our day of the week and walked all the way around the block, but it was definitely closed. I don't know if it's always closed on Saturday and they just haven't updated their signs, or if they were on strike, or closed for some other reason this particular day. It looked quite interesting to us, so it was a big disappointment to find it closed without explanation.

The museum is a little out of the centre, but worth the walk. It is small, but packed with artefacts, with English descriptions. Lots of Roman material outside to stroll around as well, so a couple of hours well spent.

An interesting museum containing finds from around Split. If you are in Split for a few days, its worth a visit.

We were very impressed with this museum. It is quite small but has so many artefacts from the local area. It has displays of Neolithic and Greek and Roman treasures all discovered locally. It has English descriptions on all displays and some fascinating exhibits. I loved the coins and the epigraphs. So many epigraphs (stones with inscriptions).

The museum was founded in 1820 on the initiative of Francis I, emperor of Austria. He had visited the newly annexed area in 1818 and had been impressed with the immense amount of classical material in the area. The museum outgrew its original quarters, and the current quarters were completed in 1920. Many fine, small objects of metal and glass are displayed inside. Outside, under porches are displayed many objects of mosaic or stone, especially sarcophagi, several of which equal in artistic value those of the Vatican Museum.
