“Don't miss this place when in Split!”
Reviewed 8 June 2014

This small restaurant / cafe is a must when visiting Split. We ate here one evening and experienced great Croatian home cooking. It provides great value for money. The staff source their produce locally including from the vibrant green market nearby and clearly set out to provide a wholesome unpretentious eating experience. We had a whisper the BBC had been there filming with Rick Stein so expect to see this little gem on TV next year.

“Quaint, fresh & Delish!”
Reviewed 5 June 2014 via mobile

It was a challenge to find this gem in the heart of Diocletian's Palace, but well worth it! We ordered a fresh juice, minestrone, mussle risotto, grilled prawn & veg, and seasonal salad. The staff (2 women) were very nice to my Croatian speaking partner; we sat outside the small restaurant on a tall table on the small cobblestone street. Risotto had some grit and was a bit salty, but everything else was great - home cooked and fresh. Good Value for decent portions - recommended for 'local foodies' who want more than fast food in the very touristy town of Split!

“Perfect Antidote to the Tourist Traps”
Reviewed 1 June 2014

Do not miss this gem in the heart of Split. Small, hard-to-find and a favorite among locals (we were conspicuous, but warmly welcomed, tourists!), the daily, fresh menu is a refreshing change from the cookie-cutter, price-inflated offerings you'll find in the tourist traps along the Riva and bordering the main squares.

Our AirBnB host recommended Villa Spiza for our first night in Split, and we loved it so much we returned for an encore the second night. The first night, I had the mussel-and-clam risotto, which was far more mussels and clams, and far less rice -- and I can honestly say it was the best shellfish meal I've ever had (including in Belgium). The second night, I had the scorpionfish ("skarpini") -- a choice the chef described as "the queen of the sea." She was not incorrect. Grilled whole over the wood fire and served with fresh grilled vegetables, it literally melted in my mouth.

The place is truly a hole-in-the-wall (but tastefully finished), with just two tall tables and a bench outside in the alley, and a few tables and seats inside facing the open kitchen. We loved this, as sitting outside allows you to observe the locals in action, and sitting inside allows you to chat with the cooks as they prepare your meal. Here, we learned that staff goes to the fish market every morning at 5am to select their offerings for the day, which are fresh off the boats. Produce is a mixture of wild and locally-sourced choices. Eating at an "off hour" will improve your chances of finding a seat; both times, we arrived around 4:00pm and had no trouble.

I also want to note that as someone with celiac, I'm always nervous eating in unknown restaurants -- especially when traveling. The staff speaks excellent English and were very accommodating, explaining exactly how they would prepare both of my meals. Of course, it helps that everything is fresh and not microwaved out of a box. :-)

In short, I cannot recommend Villa Spiza highly enough. If you're looking for a candlelit, perfectly orchestrated experience, this is not the place for you. However, if you want to experience a slice of authentic Split culture over a delicious, memorable meal at remarkably inexpensive prices, head directly to this spot!

“Truely amazing!”
Reviewed 31 May 2014 via mobile

Although the service was a bit slow, the food totally made up for it. We ordered the shellfish risotto and tuna steak, both absolutely delicious! The place looks small but cozy. If you want value for money, I would seriously recommend you to try this place. It was beyond my expectations!
