but smaller than you think. It was locked when we got there but a very kind nun was passing and she let us in! It was decorated for Christmas so was magically lit inside.

The Peristyle is my favorite spot in Split, bevause there you can feel the uniqueness and what is special about Split in the most concentrated way:
I loved Split for the feeling of "Living history" you have everywhere in the old town, most visuable for me in the strange sight of people living in and reusing the old Diocletian Palace in the strangest ways. To me this is the most visuable sign of the influence of the roman empire and culture into our modern life, the integration of it's culture in the life all over europe, which is in Split still so visible. And at the same time it is just strangely funny and fascinating how the old palace was used in the last 1600 years and is used today. At the Peristyle you see roman, medieval, renaissance, venetian and modern architetecture all intertwined and mixed in a chaotic way, and at the same time you still feel the power of the roman architecture. I could feel the chill of the soldiers, standing before the godlike emperor Diocletian, but also the fear of the early medieval peasants that turned the palace into a fortress, protecting them from barbarian invaders, and the joy of tte venetian merchants building the tower of the cathedral and going to mass there. This feelings get multiplied by the roman re-enactments in the peristyle, the street artits singing traditional croationa capella music and the singing from the mass in the cathedral.

As you see, I love this place and recommend very much sitting down on the stairs and columns, enjoying a drink from the Luxor and just soaking in the feeling of experiencing nearly 2000 years of history!

Live music and good vibes made for a romantic evening at Diocletian's Palace in Split, Croatia. Lots of good food to choose from and staff to make any kind of refreshment you might desire.
