But NOT today. This hotel was once a gem of a place. Tito used to put people up in here. But like most hotels in Split it suffered greatly as a refugee shelter during the wars that broke out at the dissolution of Yugoslavia. The President was among the last to return as a commercial hotel, and it needs a lot more work. The "Tower" is still under construction, although I have heard there are rooms available there, rumored to be much better than the ones we got in the old wing.

My room was very small and (bare;y) basic. The bed was comfortable, but the pillows were small and too soft. The desk and chair were old and battered. The bathroom flooded because the shower curtain was only slightly wider than the bath towel! My window had quaint shudders that opened onto a view of the roof over the first floor, an air conditioning unit and the construction site for the "Tower."

The lobby is kind of fun in a Socialist-creepy sort of way: 1950s Communist Deco Revival, including a brass and marble open-step spiral staircase up to the restaurant. And that restaurant had some of the worst food I have ever encountered in all my travels. The veal roast was inedible because it was unchewable! How on earth do you cook veal to make it that tough! And their coffee was not only the worst coffee I have ever had, it was the most repulsive liquid of any kind I have ever tried to swallow! Breakfast at the President is NOT a pleasant way to start your day!

We stayed at this hotel based on its 4 star rating. This hotel was a joke. The Front desk staff, as is common in post-communist countries, were rude and obstructive. However there was a very sweet and helpful waiter and I had an excellent risotto at the restaurant.
When we returned after walking all day in the heat we found that there was no hot water. Which was sad as there was a lovely large bathtub in a large marble bathroom. When I called down, the night girl, who was sick, came up, felt the very cool tap water and pronounced it kind of warm.
She swore that it was impossible as all the hotel is on the same boiler. I think that the hotel must turn it off at night. She denied this but there was never any hot water that night.
The next morning, I brought it up with the daytime desk staff. I asked for the manager. They blocked me very skillfully from speaking to whoever that person was, insisting that what I was saying was impossible. When I said that I would like a discount from the price, they snorted cynically, as if I had made the entire story up to trick them.
It is also around a 15 minute walk into the city center.
I am used to Eastern Europe, being married to a Slovak, but this staff took the prize in unhelpfulness and bad attitude.

The staff is ineficient and disorganized. They make you call twice, send email or fax to confirm your booking which is not convenient while you are off travelling the country.
They book (and charge you) a parking place but if you drive away for an afternoon ride, your place will be rebooked (and recharged to another person).
"We're sorry" is probably what you will hear most often from the staff. However, the rooms are nice (but very small : bump your toes everywhere kind of room) and the hotel is few minutes walk from the center. (There is a parking lot in front, just in case).
The breakfast is fine but the use of fluorescent lights makes it an owful place for dinner.
Anyway, you will probably never arrive there because it is a tiny street, probably not showing up in your guide book, no signs show the direction from the main streets and if you call to ask for direction, the nice receptionist "not from the city... I'm sorry", will make you wait few 1EUR minutes on your roaming mobile phone, while she asks a collegue...

For the majority of our time in Croatia, we stayed in private accomodations, but for the first night there, I wanted to be in a hotel - after 18 hours of traveling, I wanted the security of a "homebase" knowing there would be people there who spoke English, could provide information about ferry and bus schedules, and book reservations. The Hotel President provided all that, plus the staff was lovely, helpful, and friendly. I was a bit worried that the location would be distant from the old part of the city, but we enjoyed the very short walk into the old town and its restaurants, shops, bakeries, and gelaterias. The next morning we left for Hvar via the Jadrolinija ferry, and it was easy to walk downtown to the harbour even with luggage. The room was smallish, but the price was right. Also, we were too tired to go the soccer game that night, but it seemed everyone in town was fired up for the match. Had we decided to go, too, the stadium was w/i walking distance of the hotel.

We satyed at this hotel for one night as a break in the guided tour bus ride from the north down to Dubrovnik. The town is worth a day's look as it contains Diacletian's Palace which is a sight to behold.
The hotel is interesting. Our room (number 514) was on the back and very quiet with excellent air-conditioning. It was also on the third story in the "new" building with NO elevator. But, it had been newly renovated and was in sparkling condition with one of the most spectacular bathrooms.
The dinner and breakfast we had were very average - especially the breakfast.
