This was the question my wife asked when we arrived in Split after a cruise of the Adriatic. And sure enough this unique hotel occupies a corner of the Diocletian Palace on the Riva in Split.
Firts impression was that it was clearly a historic building, but beautifully situated in the bustling centrepiece of historic Split.
The room was comfortable, if understandably a little small, but it suited us to be so centrally located. The hotel has an open air restaurant where we had dinner one night and a very generous breakfast the following morning. You are spoilt for choice with restaurants galore throughout the interior of the walls of the Diocletian Palace, hidden away in the myriad streets and alleyways as well as in the large open spaces.
The Manager was a gracious man who treated us like royalty, which we are not, and all the staff were equally polite and attentive. The Croatians have been through some tough times, and there appears to be a determination to make up for lost time and capitalize on the beauty of this picturesque country through encouraging tourism by treating visitors to their country with respect and cordiality.
Our stay in a Palace was a pleasant experience and a lovely last night in beautiful Croatia.

We stayed at this hotel in October 2012. This is a boutique hotel just inside the walls of the Diocletian's Palace, next to the Peristil square and the Cathedral. It is a perfect location to see the city highlights. Staff was very friendly and very helpful with all of our questions and concerns. We had a double room that was generous in size, had a separate sitting room, was well furnished, and had lots of charm. Included wifi and a nice buffet breakfast made this an excellent choice. We had dinner at the restaurant in the hotel one night and were quite pleased with the food and the service. An excellent choice for staying in Split!

Loved this hotel. We happened to walk by it when visiting the old city and they had a room available for us. From the minute we walked in until check out we felt we were the only guests. (hotel was sold out). The staff were friendly and very helpfull. We asked for directions for a specific museum, and instead of the usual markings on the map, Salvador walked with us the whole way. Rooms are very very clean and comfortable, food is amazing. We had dinner and breakfast at their restaurants. Def more than the three star rating they have. Mila the owner is charming.

Room Tip: Request front rooms, facing the old city.back rooms face the walls.

Built directly into the old walls of the Diocletian Palace this hotel was in a a word PHENOMENAL. Actually within the old city it afforded the opportunity to wander the streets at at night after the crowds had gone home and have this fascinating city all to ourselves (practically anyway). The lights on the palace at night made for some great photos and were inspiring. The hotel also served a REAL breakfast, brought by waiters and waitresses on order --not the ubiquitous buffet that gets so tiresome. Dinner at night is also available here which was really very good and well prepared. The staff were extraordinarily helpful, courteous and friendly. Would definitely return and is HIGHLY recommended.

Room Tip: make sure you get a room with a view of the walls and palace. I think most do--ours did.

We arrived late morning on the ferry from Stari Grad and had to drive our rental car to the hotel and then return it to the rental company. We followed the route given by the GPS until it looked like we could no longer continue to drive (indicated by a sign and the presence of market stalls in the street) then we parked the car and searched on foot (GPS in hand) until we found the location.

On arrival the hotel quickly dispatched staff to fetch our bags after I refused their offer to drive the car down through the market stalls for me (this is the first hotel where I have seen the chefs come out of the kitchen and help carry your bags!) they got my mother in law settled in to one of our rooms while the rest of us were away returning the car. Our departure was effortless, we booked a transfer to the airport and were picked up from the loading area at the top of the street.

I cannot say enough about the staff, they were all genuinely friendly, offered good advice, nothing was too difficult and they went out of their way to ensure that our stay was enjoyable. Special mention goes to Dada and Tino who treated my nine year old daughter as their “number 1 guest” and fussed over her as if she is not spoilt enough already.

The location within the palace walls is stunning giving a sense of living amongst ancient ruins but with all the modern day comforts. The rooms were nicely decorated, clean and tidy and ours had part of the old wall exposed to add to the ambience. Step outside the door and you have everything from the markets to the Riva within short walking distance (we spent a lot of time just exploring within the palace walls) and of course there are the many restaurants, but don’t be in too much of a hurry to walk past the hotel restaurant, we dined in lots of other restaurants while in Split and quite frankly didn’t find anything better than the fresh local cuisine on offer at this hotel.

Although some might find the price a bit high, it is a case of “you get what you pay for” and Hotel Peristil definitely did not fail to deliver, the combination of location, ambience dedicated staff and dining experiences made this hotel stand out for us and we have no hesitation in recommending it to other travellers or staying there again should we visit Split in the future.

Tips
1. A GPS unit is a good way to find the hotel. To find the entrance go in to the palace through the East gate (half way along Ul Hrvoja Vukcica Hrvatinica), past some market stalls and turn left. There is no sign on the outer wall or the small entry way through it (as mentioned in a previous review).

2. You can park legally for free at the top of the street (Ul Hrvoja Vukcica Hrvatinica) next to the Strossmayerov park if you are loading or unloading. Make sure that you leave a person with the car to keep the tow truck operators at bay.

3. In the summer time many towns have the Riva (or boardwalk) closed to vehicular traffic and the GPS unit may not realise this and try to direct you via the shortest route which is quite often the Riva.
