Forget the grumpies on the desk, when pushed they can be quite helpful. The road closure makes catching a taxi very expensive, but that can be avoided by a brisk walk of 250 metres along the waterfront to the next taxi stand. Room was fine with a fan but no AC. Clean and minimalist bedding was OK. Downtown Split is a great place to be and the Bellvue is right there. If you want place to crash its fine. On the other hand it ain't for honeymooners. Hard to beat a large beer in the courtyard bar overlooking the harbour in the heat of the afternoon.

Don't believe the website!

Old and out of date. Miserable staff. Barely said a word to us, even when we checked out early next morning.

Listed as a 3 star, but no more than a 2. No air con, tiny beds, almost no bedding. Very hot rooms, and if you're unlucky to get a room on the roadside wave goodbye to a good nights sleep. Also, no smoke alarm of fire escape instuctions displayed, I dread to think what would happen if there was a fire in this hotel.

Oh, and the lift stank.

Don#t make the mistake of spending one night there, avoid!

We had reserved a room at the Bellevue for four nights but checked-out after the first. The hotel is old (I believe it is still state-owned so is missing out on private rennovation that other hotels in Split have had) but has a good location and some charm (flock wallpaper)! We were disappointed when we checked-in because the website really sells this hotel. It was our honeymoon and thought we were getting a nice 3-star hotel. The rooms are basic and the furnishings old. There is no air-conditioning which is a must for summer-time in Split. I can't see how this would be more than a 2-star.

The main reasons we checked out was the noise in the local area combined with the slightly uncomfortable bed. The lack of air-con means the window has to be open and the noise from the road (late night revellers and early morning delivery vans) is very distruptive to a good nights Split. The 6am wake up call by the bells in the local church took the biscuit. When we checked out, the receptionist barely acknowledged our presence and only said "784" which was the price of the room in Kunas (about £95). If you only want a place to put your head for a night there are cheaper 2-star hotels and better 3-star hotels. The local tourist info centre does not recommend the Bellevue (we found out after asking for a recommendation for another hotel) as they have heard of the rooms not being as clean as they should be but this was not our experience. The stayed at the Marmont Hotel instead. It's a 4-star but was still only £135 per night (a special rate as we were a walk-in booking) for a six-foot bed, air-con, plasma screen and shower big enough for a social event!

Overall, it's a shame the Bellevue isn't better as the location is lovely and the buiding's facade is pretty.

However, I have to commend whoever made their website - it makes the hotel look like a palace!

Just returned from a three night stay at the Bellevue Hotel in Split. While this hotel does have a great location and a lot of charm ( the cafe in the front feels like a time capsule), there are some things you need to consider if you decide to stay. That said, If you are looking for a very very basic place with a killer local stop reading and book now... you won't be disappointed. In the event you require more comfort? I have to advise you not stay here. The hotel has not been well kept over the years and most of the concern I had was with severely dated fixtures and cleanliness. Bellevue also lacks many things that would be considered standard these days. The list includes: no in-room Internet (although you can connect to the free wireless the city of Split provides for the town centre. The washrooms are beyond dated and were quite dirty, there is no room-service of any kind, the beds are old and very uncomfortable, although the the sheets were new and clean. No in-room safe. Many rooms on the third floor have only one small porthole like window. You have to lock yourself in at night with an old key, this could be a serious problem if you had to evacuate quickly in the dark. All of the hotel staff smoke in a small lounge off the reception area and it permeates the the building. This hotel is located in a very busy area and the noise goes late and starts early. I stayed in room 101 which was spacious and had a great view of the harbour. I would not stay here again.

The location is fantastic and is good value. The hotel is pretty spartan and no frills, but has everything one needs. Clean rooms. Overall, would recommend it.

Stayed here for 4 nights. Beware of rooms on the third floor because they have only a very small window high up on the wall that affords no views. Rooms were basic and a bit dated, but comfortable. No magnetic stripe cards, but old fashioned metal keys to get into rooms. Location is perfect right on Split Harbor and down the promenade (called the Riva) to Diocletians Palace. Affordable eating opportunities around along with car rentals and travel agencies. Both bus station and ferry terminals are walking distance. Small grocery store about two blocks away behind the proparty. Taxi to airport about 300 kuna from the rank out front, or walk down the promenade to the Croatia Airlines bus which is cheaper. Church bells will wake you early morning, but its better than a blaring alarm clock.

We stayed here for a night in late September 07. We had planned to stay 2 nights in Split but our decision to leave was based solely on the horrible night we spent in the Bellevue.

We arrived late, we found reception and checked in with the most unfriendly (downright rude actually) staff we have met. Our room was on one of the higher floors. Dark, bad mock wood panelling that I cant quite describe divided an average size hotel room room into sections, the entrance, the wardrobe, the bathroom and the room where two small beds were. The bathroom was dirty. The heater had congealed dirt and looked like it hadnt been wiped down in years. The floor had stains on it. The bathroom suite was old and decrepit. I was almost wretching brushing my teeth.

The window in the bedroom was about 1 foot x 6 inches. It didnt close properly which I guess was no bad thing since there was no air con, only a dirty looking fan. The decor was so far out of date, and looked cheap and nasty even if it was 1970. However, we dont go to 3 star hotels for modern decor. We do, however, expect a certain level of cleanliness. It was sadly lacking in Hotel Bellevue. Truly the worst place I stayed in in a very long time. Awarding themselves 3 stars (as I cannot imagine any independent body that has seen that room awarding it even one star) is absolutely laughable. It was horrendous. Dont stay there.
