House Katarina - Old town
Ranked #101 of 182 Dubrovnik B&B and Inns
Reviewed 15 July 2014

We were in the Petra studio room for 4 nights last week. The room is small but has all the necessary facilities ( bathroom with shower, corner kitchen, air conditioner ). The katarina house is very close to the Stradun ( Main Street ) but there isn't noise. Very appreciate the kindness of the owner's house : when we arrived we informed him that my husband had a recent surgery operation at the back and the day of departure ( very early in the morning, abt 6 am ) he was waiting for us outside of the apartment just for helping us with the luggage. He booked for us the taxi, so he did more than requested. In addition at mid of the vacation we found the service room done, totally unexpected. Another important useful info : more up in the stairs ( the apartment opens long one of the nice stairs than from Stradum go to the top of the City ) you can find one of the best restaurant called " Lady Pi Pi ". Really spacious apartment on the left side of the main street in the old down. It's up quite a number of steps so it's not easy if you have lots of luggage. Owners are lovely and helpful. Room was small but quaint and clean. Upstairs there was a living area with table, cooker, fridge, tv and sofa. Bathroom was good and there's also a washer if you need it. We stayed there for one night and would definitely stay there again.

Katerina is a nice person and the rooms were exactly as described. We had a pleasant stay with no hassles at all. The airconditioning in the living room is good. It's a good location not far from Stradun and up lots of steps, which none of us minded. Very good, I'd be happy to stay there again.

Owners very pleasant and obliging. The larger apartment on three levels with attractive open plan lounge/dining room/kitchen. Lots of steps from Stradum entrance to town but this is unavoidable in Old Town. Probably not suitable for elderly or infirm. Very neat and clean with lots of towels, linen and kitchen requirements.

...that is perfect for a stay in Dubrovnik at a reasonable price. We left our accomodation booking till the last minute, as one sometimes does, and found ourselves without too many decent options in the Old Town. I'm more budget-minded than my travelling companion and suggested House Katarina to him; though doubtful he agreed and we booked and hit the road. Judging by his review to me, this place is a great option and excellent value. Staying in the Petra studio, we were surprised at the cleanliness and comfort of the place. You get access to the common area with a kitchen and dining area with TV and lounge. The bathroom was perfectly adequate and even had a washing machine with powder supplied so we could do some laundry. The bed was very comfortable and opening the curtains in the morning to the Croatian sun was and fresh air was just magic. Sinisa, the owner and caretaker, was prompt in meeting us, very friendly and spoke great English. We had no troubles during our stay. The rooms are not super-modern but are clean and comfortable.

I feel the famous 'stair climb' must be mentioned here; yes it is something of a challenge but it's not anything that a normal person couldn't manage. We carried two 20kg+ bags plus backpacks up the stairs (admittedly I am a fairly well-built and handsome guy) with a few stops along the way and it wasn't that bad. So don't let that put you off. If you are really unable to make it up, you could kindly ask Sinisa for help!

House Katarina (named after the owner's wife, Katarina) is run by the friendly Kraljevic family, and is located off the beaten path in what amounts to the residential area of Stari Grad. It's not super easy to find. If you come in through Pile Gate, go down to Ulica Naljeskoviceva (street), and climb the stone stairs to number 18. Katarina's house will be on the right-hand side. The streets/pathways and addresses are marked on the sides of the stone edifices. Although worth it, one should know that the climb is formidable and may be difficult for bigger or older people. Just make sure you look at the exact location before you book.

I made my reservation in advance (absolutely necessary even in the off season), so the owner (Sinisa) was waiting for me. He welcomed me to their house and showed me my room. I stayed in the Studio Petra, which is a basic studio (bathroom/shower, stove, refrigerator, large bed, television, and wardrobe). The window in the room opens up to the walkway, which is nice if you want to feel the breeze or listen to local chatter. The room also had heating/AC though I did not have to use it. This is hostel-style accomodation, which is basic, so don't come expecting room service, bed and breakfast services, or in-house tour guides at your disposal. Instead, expect a comfortable, clean, convenient room and a friendly point in the right direction if necessary.

With that said, on my way out of town, Sinisa did help me arrange transportation. So during your stay, don't be afraid to drop the owners an e-mail or knock on their door for anything you may need. If they do not do it, they can point you in the right direction.
