I struggled to find a hotel in Dubrovnik for the early May bank holiday that wasn’t a massive Hilton-type space with hundreds of rooms. Kazbek fit the bill to the t – a charming venue, away from the hustle and bustle, right on the on the water but close enough to the old town. Found a great rate on Splendia which I couldn’t say no to.

The staff was incredibly helpful and accommodating with recommendations and directions and the rooms beautifully appointed – we stayed in room 17. They also have lovely toiletries from Thierry Mugler, which if you’re not wanting to check luggage, solve your liquids issue on the plane (it had everything from shampoo, conditioner, wash, lotion, shaving kits and a nail kit).

The breakfast was absolutely divine – meats, cheeses, breads, pastries, rip fruit and eggs in every form you could ask for. We didn't even need lunch, there was so much to choose from! It wasn’t buffet but table service on the terrace (weather permitting) which was nice because the food was freshly prepared for when you arrived as opposed to sitting out for hours.

The pool was beautiful, clean and heated – and they also had plenty of pool towels and chairs with umbrellas. Every so often, someone would come by to see if I wanted to order a drink.
It is a little tricky to get to the old town (you have to walk about 10 minutes to the nearest bus) so plan on either taking cabs or taking a 30 minute walk. If you’re staying for a short time or have issues with walking and want to go back and fourth, you might struggle a little – but that is the only minor downside that I can think of.

I’d love to come back again!

Room Tip: Ask for a room that has a view of the water - there are only a few and that's the only thing tha...

I have made a few personal comparisons to the Hotel Bellevue at the bottom of this review if you are struggling to choose between them, hope it helps!)

We were very warmly welcomed to this beautiful hotel. Concierge came out to the taxi as soon as we arrived and carried our bags in. My bf had e-mailed and asked for a bouquet of flowers in the room for me, and whoever chose them did so well, absolutely beautiful. We were upgraded to the Deluxe Room (I don't know why, but I won't complain!), and this room is stunning. The bathroom is one of the nicest I have ever seen in a hotel. Everything spotless. A really nice fresh fruit platter and bottle of water waiting for us, which was complimentary (see below for Bellevue comparison).

Contrary to one of the previous reviews, we had a view of the port. Perhaps this is the only room with a "sea" view, but they are wrong to say none of the rooms face this way as ours did. Windows on the other side had a peek of the pool area.

The lady on reception (whose name I cannot remember) was so helpful every morning. She deserves a pay rise as she is, in my opinion, the epitome of excellent service.

Breakfast is in the courtyard, where we were brought a selection of fresh fruit, cheese, meats, bread, pastries, jams etc...and offered a choice of eggs (poached, omelette, boiled etc).

The pool area is lovely, a little sun trap. Loungers have mattress toppers (much more comfy than others!). Lovely space to spend an afternoon. There is a drinks service, although we didn't actually see how you would order without going to reception to find someone, but another couple seemed to manage fine so maybe we missed something. The pool is divine, not sure if it's heated because it was a lovely temperature. There is a little jacuzzi area (niggle #1, we couldn't get the bubbles to work!! We didn't ask anyone so maybe we were doing it wrong...).

You do need to do a tiny bit of walking (10 minutes tops) to the bus, and it's occasionally crowded, but most the hotels are in Lapad so I don't think that's a negative to the Kazbek. Bellevue is closer to the Old Town but a longer walk as you don't take the bus.

Ok, niggles....

#1 jacuzzi, see above.
#2 bathroom toiletries : a nice selection, unfortunately the manicure set and make-up pad boxes were empty and the hand cream had definitely been used (it was all manky around the edges). I did not complain at the time as we had been upgraded and it seemed a little rude to do so, but it took the shine off when I realised it.
#3 the terrace bar/cocktail bar : we didn't realise there was a terrace until the second night, but it was empty every night/day (lights off and no-one there), which was a real shame as we would have liked to sit and enjoy a cocktail one night. I wonder if it is too early in the season (a good thing for Dubrovnik!), so perhaps this would have more atmosphere when busier.

All-in-all, VERY tiny niggles.

We went to Korcula for a couple of nights (highly recommend, hire a car and take the ferry!!), we stayed at the Bellevue for our last night. A quick note to compare....the Bellevue is a much bigger, impersonal hotel. We were told every room had a balcony, ours did not. The room is nothing compared to the Kazbek, service is good but lacks personality (and sometimes felt we were an annoyance!)...Bellevue is good (spa, beach, closer to town) but if you want a boutique, smaller (romantic) hotel with outstanding service and beautiful, individual rooms, choose the Kazbek.

Room Tip: Deluxe Room is really special.

Dear Vicki524,

Thank you very much indeed for taking the time to write such detailed review and pointing out so many positive details about our little hotel.
It is a true pleasure to know that you consider us as a beautiful hotel with outstanding service and that you recommend us highly.
Regarding the niggles you mentioned:
Jacuzzi: there is a button in the pool (right next to the jacuzzi area) that you have to press and the bubbling starts. I wish you contacted our reception to show you how to start it.
Bathroom toiletries: we truly apologize the manicure set and make-up pads boxes were empty and for the hand cream. It is obviously an omission from our side and I apologize again in the name of our housekeeping team. I ensure you this is not how we do the business because we really do our best to take care of every single detail. I will just mention for the hand cream that it comes originally packed from the manufacturer without any inside protection. The cream is very liquid so it sometimes might look like it was used although it is new. Please note that we have already contacted the Croatian representative of the Thierry Mugler cosmetics in regards to this issue.
Once again thank you for your lovely review. We do hope to welcome you again at our Kazbek hotel.

Sincerely,

Pave Miloglav

This is a very good hotel. The rooms are well ap[pointed and the beds comfortable, It has a good range of facilities. The breakfast was inclusive and included a wide range of alternatives.Service was attentive and helpful. All round a very good experience.

Howeverr the hotel is located a good distance from the old town and there is no easy way to get thetre other than a relatively expensive taxi or a relativbely distant bus up hill. The return bus is easy since it stops almost outside (one way syatem and you would need to ride to the terminus to aviod the uphill walk out)

The hotel is virtually on the water which is great if you are on the terrace bar but none of the rooms face the water (the windows are set high up so you could be anyhere) and the main ground floor terrace with good seating etc is in a walled area.

Poor layout but I suspect the local planning authorities had a hand in this.

A/C not switched on until a specific date in May whatever the weather.

Room Tip: Suites at front. Side rooms not so good.

Dear thankyouandgoodnight,

Many thanks for your lovely review and overall a positive feedback following your recent stay with us. We are however very sorry there must be a "but", but we do appreciate your opinion.

We just feel an obligation to respond regarding your comment for A/C. It is not actually the case that we switch it on on a specific date regardless the weather situation. Namely at the end of April there was an extreme change of the weather situation: after many days of rain and fresh weather suddenly it became very hot during the day, but the nights were still pretty chilly. That is why we decided to keep the heating few more days until the weather stabilizes.

Nevertheless I am delighted to know that your stay with us was a very good experience and we hope to welcome you back in the future!

Sincerely,

We had expectations on the basis of tips we read and photos we saw, but everything at the hotel exceeded all the expectations absolutely positively. The room we stayed in was furnished and decorated with a very good taste, it was spacious and the windows opened towards the Gruz harbour and to the pool as well. The room service was invisible, the cleaning ladies never disturbed us. The room was always impeccably clean. As to the staff, they all were extremely kind and helpful, and we think it was not only their habit to serve customers but it all came directly from their hearts. The breakfast was abundant and the waiter was willing to fulfill all wishes one ever can have. The last drop was the morning we left: the waiter was ready to make us sandwiches for our journey back home! We never ever have experienced this kind of service anywhere even though we have travelled a lot. We also had a 3 course dinner with a bottle of wine in the restaurant, and we have to say that the food was good and tasty with the superb service but at a reasonable cost. An extra plus is that there is a laptop for customers' use.
The location of the hotel is good: there is a bus stop not far from the hotel and it is not too far walking to the old town either. You will not and cannot be disappointed when choosing the Kazbek hotel!!!

Perfect place to spend some time relaxing (although mostly indoors due to weather) in a good position on the Gruz harbour - handy for bus, not too far to walk into Old City. Rooms are well appointed with extra touches that make it special. STaff all very helpful and friendly. Breakfast choices excellent, much prefer having food cooked to order than a buffet. Lovely dining room for evening too - and excellent wines.

It exceeded our expectations.
The words “boutique hotel” have been over-used and often have little meaning. But at the Kazbek you remember what it really means. Attentive staff who seem to really enjoy their work and go the extra mile effortlessly; beautifully appointed rooms and a great location. 2012 is its fifth season after a major renovation, so everything is still new.
The review by "Hellbraun" entitled "Lovely and best place in Dubrovnik" says everything that we would say.
The weather was damp and overcast with rain from time to time, but the hotel’s atmosphere was so pleasant that we didn’t notice this and the hotel even provided umbrellas in reception.
GETTING THERE BY CAR:
It’s on a one way system. If you look out for the large Hotel Lapad and keep going slowly thereafter, you’ll see the Kazbek’s metal gates on the left. The staff will show you were to park – I gather there are plenty of places.

The two possible negatives that previous reviews refer to are:
1) The distance from the Old Town. Yes, it is a 10 minutes taxi drive (cost around 70-80 Kuna – or take the number 6 bus which goes past the door) from the Old Town, but it makes up for this in a great location beside the bay. Also I don’t think there are any hotels in the Old Town itself (just apartments and rooms to rent).
2) The breakfast, which is not the usual hotel buffet, but a la carte. Yes, it is nice to see what tickles your fancy on a buffet and see what the musli or eggs look like. But we were more than pleased when they brought exactly what we wanted, including sausage, bacon and scrambled eggs (…though we didn’t go as far as black pudding!). The portions were very large and the coffee excellent.

Room Tip: Note that the top floor rooms (numbered 2xx) do not have low windows so they have light but no view...
