Description: The Fish Restaurant Proto, established in 1886, is located in the heart of Dubrovnik’s historical core, at the intersection of the Široka and Vara streets. The long tradition of this popular Dubrovnik restaurant attests to its reputation and lasting quality based on its unparalleled preparation of diverse seafood and meat dishes. Proto’s gourmet menu is inspired by indigenous dishes and the culinary artistry of Dubrovnik’s distinguished citizenry, passed down from one generation to the next. Our top local chefs add a touch of contemporary culinary trends to traditional recipes. Guests are offered imaginative dishes made from fresh Adriatic fish, shellfish, crabs, and molluscs. The menu depends exclusively on the daily availability of fresh ingredients. Refined gourmet connoisseurs believe the restaurant’s lure and distinctiveness arise from the variety of seafood on offer which depends on the weather and catch. Our friendly staff is always willing to explain every detail on the menu, filet the fish for guests less skilled in deboning, and often serve as promoters of national cuisine, in particular the Mediterranean cuisine with which they are most familiar. Along with seafood, Proto offers organic vegetables with genuine, long forgotten flavours, grown in the gardens of Župa Dubrovačka, several rural homesteads in Konavle, and on the nearby islands. The authentic taste of meat specialties reflects the quality of the livestock from Dubrovnik's hinterland. The Proto Fish Restaurant's sommelier, Croatia's current champion, recommends perfect pairings of Croatian and foreign wines with fish and meat specialties. Depending on the weather, the restaurant’s specialties can be enjoyed in its cosy interior or on the terrace overlooking the throngs of visitors strolling up and down the Stradun. The Fish Restaurant Proto takes pride in its tradition and the dignitaries it has hosted, including King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson, and many star actors, musicians and entertainers who participated in the Dubrovnik Summer Festival while staying at Dubrovnik’s luxury hotels. The Fish Restaurant Proto keeps pace with gourmet trends, continually innovating and updating its menu so as to please the tastes of its guests from all over the world who visit Dubrovnik, renowned not only for its cultural and historical heritage, but also increasingly as a top gourmet destination. From the abundance of ingredients on offer, Chef Boško Lonac selects the finest products to present the highest values of Mediterranean cuisine to our guests. The reputation of this cuisine’s flavours, considered the world’s best by many connoisseurs and backed by the impressions of Dubrovnik’s visitors, is spreading around the world unstoppably. Satisfied guests are the most important outcome of this mission, continually reaffirming the Proto’s proud tradition. Pay us a visit and see what makes us the best seafood restaurant in the Old City.

“Definitely worth a visit”
Reviewed 16 May 2012 via mobile

I was recommended this restaurant by a Dubrovnik native as being "best for sea food in the old town".
I was disappointed at being seated at an outside but not terrace table even though it was early for dinner and the place wasn't packed.
However, service was prompt and the cooking definitely professionally executed. Prices were a bit high but then this is Dubrovnik!
Well worth a visit!

“It's great food and no more pricey than seafood in your home town”
Reviewed 16 May 2012

The terrace is very pretty and a lovely place to sit for lunch.
Menu has good variety and as you would expect several whole fish dishes. They offer great wine and to our surprise the waiter suggested the less expensive wine when asked for his advise.
Attentive and professional staff, we ate here twice on our trip. The second time after having walked out of Posat in discust at being told the fish fillet was frozen (yes beware, frozen fish in fish restaurant)
We had whole fish on both occassions and each time it was cooked perfectly.
Slightly pricey but everything in the old town is and your a tourist so prob best to remember that and........ You would pay more for it in our home town.
A nice place to eat with very good food

“Good food, but too expensive”
Reviewed 14 May 2012

We were excited to have dinner at Proto because it was recommended by our hotel and a taxi driver. The ambient of the restaurant is nice, we got a table in the terrace. The service is also good. However, the prices are too high considering that the main courses are small. You will need an appetizer or a dessert for sure! The food isn't anything special: it is good but I was expecting much more. This dinner was in our first day in Dubrovnik and in the following days we found better and not too expensive restaurants in the old town.

“Good seafood and awesome terrace”
Reviewed 13 May 2012 via mobile

We had a very nice dinner at Proto. It was expensive but worth it. The scampi gnocchi is an excellent appetizer and definitely recommended. The wine list is all Croatian so you get the local flavor...the one we had was delicious. Also, try to sit on the terrace. It's a great place to enjoy a nice meal and glass of wine. And thee service was excellent!

“Ultimate sea food experience”
Reviewed 12 May 2012

Proto is lovingly settled in the centre of the Old town, but the terrace gives total privacy. Misho, our very attentive waiter, served us a little appetizer on the house-something to enjoy while we waited for our starter to arrive. Starter came and went, whetting our appetite for more. The mains were just as exemplary as the starter. I love my fish and truly, my fish tasted of the sea and the chef's skill and ingenuity. Bravo!!!
