MIA CASA DUBROVNIK: Super location and a Perfect Host.
If you visit Dubrovnik then you have two choices. You can stay in the Old Town where houses are, well, old or go to the swankier digs in the New town. We chose Old Town because that is what has the charm, the romanticism of a time gone past, the people and the atmosphere. Compared to this, the new town, is just another place. Pretty and neat and nice and all that but quite simply lacking in the ambience that the old town has!
We booked Mia Casa thru the Net and it was an absolute breeze. We liked what we saw on the net and what we read and Vanja, the owner, provided necessary information thru mails. Once booking done she let us know that her father, Mirlenko, would be around to recieve us. And there he was, as stated, waiting for us to arrive, at the Pile gate. Such a genial and friendly mannered person, he put us at ease instantly. Grabbing hold of one of our suitcases (we had several!) he took us on a leisurely but short walk from the famous gateway to the old town to his own castle. Moving thru undulating lanes (that look absolutely the same when you see them the first time), he pointed out to us the landmarks and the street names so it became rather easy for us to know how to reach the place almost immediately! Location wise the house is bang in the middle of everything in old town but still standing isolated enough in a noise free lane where wafts of local restaurents don’t come into your home!
We were greeted at his home by his wonderful wife Maya, and to our surprise, they had a small meal just waiting for us! How very thoughtful. The house was as shown on the website. Well decorated with hundreds of knick knacks attesting to the ‘lost story ‘. The most marvellous thing was that it had no stairs to climb to reach it- just one flight within to reach the first floor that has the two bedrooms. If you are looking for a large apartment in the Old town, you are not going to find one. They are all small but Mia Casa has enough room to accommodate upto five people. Four in the bedrooms upstairs and one in the hallway if necessary. What is fantastic is that the house has 4 bathrooms! Thats a huge relief when you are travelling in a group.
Though the rooms were small they were more than adequate. Nice beds- in fact, very nice beds- with adequate number of pillows, quilt etc, aircondition in every room and absolutely every convenience that you can think of! The owners have really gone the extra mile to provide you with absolutely everything you need, be it the living room, the kitchen, the bedrooms or the bathrooms! A lot of thinking has gone into what every traveller will need and they have provided 3 times as much as you would need! Towels? In plenty. Handtowels, ditto. Soaps, shower gels, shampoos? As much as you need. Washing machine? Check. Dishwasher? Check. Detergents for both of these? You got it! Reserve supplies of all these? In plenty!Amazing forethought to stock everything you need and more!
There is more. The kitchen fridge was well stocked with preserves and jams and juices. Never seen that before in any AirBnb place anywhere that I have travelled. The bedroom sidetables had a chocolate bar (for nightime nibbles?). We didn’t take any but it is the thought behind that counts. Every bathroom had eau de toilette (men and women) kept for the use of the tenant. There were books in the hall as well as in the bedroom and plenty of travel brochures in the main passageway.
After showing us the house, Mirlenko presented us with a welcome bottle of wine! Nice gesture! They had also kept a couple of bottles of wine in the house for us to consume- which we happily did. Very good wine too! More, he waited for us to get ready and soon took us on a round to show us the nearby restaurents to eat (we are vegetarians, so he took care to show us the spots which would serve us vege meals), the local super market to buy our daily stuff from as well as took us around to some sights around old town. So nice and kind of him to do this. I have been to other AirBnb outfits where I havent even met the owner. So this experience was vastly different and entirely satisfying.
A storm put the wifi out of gear (its free by the way) and Mirlenko was there next morning to fix the fault and get it working. Super service, we must say.
The TV in the hallway is good, LED and with cable TV service as well. Just to put this in perspective, we went to Hvar after our stay in Mia Casa and stayed at a big resort. The TV in the room was an obsolete model with no cable TV! A safe is available for you to store your valuables.
Are there downsides? Well, a few perhaps but nothing that you can complain about. Maybe just nitpick! One can always argue about the size of the rooms. But in the old town I doubt if you can get anything very different. If you have lots of luggage then it might be difficult to store them but for most others with a box, the space is adequate. Therre were many, many items in each room so some may feel that it is cluttered while others will appreciate the objects with interest. A dryer was missing and it becomes difficult to dry your washed clothese if you are of mind to do so. Thats about it.
So, with minimal downside and plenty of upsides, Mia Casa is a hands down winner as a place of choice to stay. Whatever it may lack (according to us, very little) it more than makes up with the charm of the house, its excellent location, the cleanliness and orderliness of its contents and above all the extraordinary warmth and concern that the owners bring. That makes us give Mia Casa a full 4 stars.
