“Excellent Hotel, Great Location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 August 2014

We booked 2 rooms for one week in August - self, wife and 18&19 year old teenage sons - all of them fussy! The hotel was bright and clean. The reception well-staffed and very helpful. They found us adjoining rooms within 1/2 hour of arrival, even though we arrived at 10am and check-in wasn't until 2pm. Everything just worked. All the staff were friendly and spoke English. We had half-board, and the food was both varied and good. The waiters worked hard to clear and reset tables quickly and to provide drinks. The spa was clean and modern, the gym larger than expected and the pools surprisingly large - I am used to pictures taken at flattering angles - but in fact, all their publicity pictures are very accurate. We used the tour booking service and the advice was helpful and the tour good value. Access to the sea is from The President Hotel, 250m away. There is a combined pool towel service, nothing was ever a hassle - we would borrow towels at either hotel and return them back at whichever one we wanted to. The public bus service is easy and convenient - 15 mins into the old town of Dubrovnik for 15 Kuna (£1.50). There was free internet throughout the hotel. Only two small gripes: the WiFi strength was not great and as a result often a bit slow - fine, however, if you used the wired connection provided in the room; and sometimes getting drinks at meal-times was a bit slower than we'd have liked. Everything felt fresh and well thought through. We even arranged airport transfers via email - and again, there wasn't a hint of hassle. The views of the sunset were stunning. The double beds were huge, and the rooms spacious as well. The air conditioning was whisper quiet, but effective. Everything considered, it is hard to imagine that we could reasonably have expected more for the price we paid. They clearly have very high standards and are not aiming at the cheap end of the package market - everything looked and felt new and well planned and extremely well managed. No hesitation in recommending this.

Room Tip: Sea view with balcony is at a premium, but you get a fantastic sunset view

This was a real eye opener. We'd not been to Dubrovnik or Croatia before but this could easily tempt us back.

The hotel is around 40 minutes in a taxi from the airport and set on a fairly quiet peninsular. It is on the busy but easy number 6 bus route from Pile just outside the city walls and it costs 15 kuna to get there each way. There are four Valamar properties, with this being the second most refined after the President. Within easy walking distance are two decent restaurants, bars and shops and Lapad is only a hilly ten minutes walk away.

The hotels are all ultra modern and are designed as business hotels with a conference facility in site. The staff are a real highlight - very friendly and really wanting to help. My daughter asked about a USB charger and they had one available FOC.

The pool is reasonably large and was much needed in the heat of summer. The pool has lots of parasols and loungers. It's close but even at the busiest time there seemed to be just enough. Towels are free and are distributed with a towel card allocated to each room. There is a bar and cafe serving decent food and there is an gym and indoor pool too.

The grounds are landscaped and there are good views of the sea. The sea is accessed via the President hotel and it has a pebbly beach, the sea is beautifully clear and is a reasonable temperature so fun to swim in.

The rooms are well furnished with a kettle and complementary rate and coffee as well as a pay mini bar. We were warned about hotel prices for drinks but we didn't think it was much more expensive than bars in the City.

Air conditioning worked well but leave the curtains drawn because the power is controlled by the key card. When you are out the aircon goes off. For this reason I wouldn't pay a premium for a balcony facing anywhere but the sea because you won't use it and possibly won't even see it. The bar in reception serves decent cocktails and there is often music in the evening. Another tip is that reception prints a facsimile of the Daily Telegraph and leaves it on the table next to the reception desk. A free way to catch up on news while you are away. The hotel has free decent wifi too.

Very happy and would have no hesitation in recommending it if you can't afford the President.

We booked a room with sea view and made a special request for a nice room with it being our ten year anniversary. We were given a lovely spacious double room with balcony and stunning view of the sea and pool. Each evening we watched the sun set from our balcony. We found beautiful roses and a lovely bottle of red wine on our first day, thank you Valamar this was a lovely touch :)

We booked a half board deal, the breakfast was good and had a lot of options but was often crowded and you had to queue for eggs or pancakes, I appreciate we stayed at peak season. The omelettes were very good though and the standard of food was high. We stayed for 9 nights and ate in the restaurant for dinner three times. It was good and there were options but we like to experience alternative restaurants whilst away. As other reviewers commented it was annoying to have to pay for even water during your evening meal.

The pool was great and sun loungers comfy, only one day we couldn't find space by the pool so headed to the Valamar President (sister hotel) and used their pool which was stunning. We also spent a day at the each of the President Hotel which was lovely. It was also nice to have new options for lunch as the Lacroma pool bar had a limited lunch menu.

The spa was great and such a perk to be able to use for free.

All of the staff were warm, welcoming and helpful. They seemed to really appreciate everyone is on holiday and looking to have a great time. Special mention for Marija (sp?) one of the waiting staff in the restaurant who was particularly lovely and friendly when pouring coffee and providing cutlery at breakfast.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and didn't want to leave, we will definitely be recommending this hotels to friends and family who are keen to visit Dubrovnik since seeing our photos :)

Room Tip: Request a sea view, it's amazing.

Great hotel, with great facilities. Great swimmingpools; with nice views. Pleasant staff and very close ti the beach. Very suitable for travelling with children.

To be improved:

Parking lot a little over crowded. Hard to find parking space.

Dear Guests,
Great review, thank you. You are absolutely right about the parking. For some reason this year we have surprisingly many guests arriving with cars and this was not the case in the past 5 years. We are already making plans for improvements for the next year.

We were celebrating our honeymoon and decided to take a trip to Dubrovnik. We had paid for a room with a balcony (and had hoped for an upgrade, or some sort of perk!), but we got a seaview room without balcony. It looked onto the bar, so was a bit noisy until about 11pm to midnight. We also had requested a double room but the room had twin beds pushed together...7 nights of that on our honeymoon wasn't exactly ideal! The reception said that the hotel was fully booked so we couldn't change rooms.

That aside, the room was clean and up to standard for a 4 star hotel. The hotel amenities were very good - indoor and outdoor pool, spa, live music every evening at the bar etc. We were worried that because the hotel was so big, it would seem busy and overcrowded, but it was very spacious so it didn't feel like there were too many people. There was always space by the pool, and the pool staff were very helpful and attentive.

We paid for half board which was worth it. Breakfast - loads of choice: pancakes, omelettes, croissants, cooked breakfast, fruit, cereals, yoghurts etc. Dinner - fair amount of choice too, although I found it a little 'samey' by the end of the week - salads, fish, pizza, Croatian dishes, pasta; good desserts (including ice cream!). My only gripe was that at dinner, you have to pay for drinks which were expensive (UK prices), and they didn't offer jugs of tap water so you had to pay each night even if you bought alcohol but wanted some water as well. They made freshly squeezed juices for 3 pounds but were measured so we thought was a bit tight as ended up being only half a glass! At breakfast, the juices were watered down, like squash, so that was a bit disappointing.

The staff were fantastic - really good natured, attentive and very helpful. The waiters worked hard and were very pleasant, always ready to clear up used plates etc. The restaurant manager was a little fierce, however, especially when he saw us take a piece of fruit with us from breakfast!

As other reviewers have commented, whilst Lacroma doesn't have a beach, you could use the beach at the President hotel down the road. We also wanted to play table tennis and were told we could play for free at the Club hotel (another sister hotel nearby).

In terms of transport, the location of the hotel is good in that it's away from the crowds of the Old City, but just a short bus ride (number 6) into town for only 1.5 GBP for a single trip (valid for an hour). You can take that bus close enough to the main bus station near the harbour for trips to different islands as well. We took the shuttle bus from the airport (7 GBP return) to the Old City and then changed to the number 6 bus to get to the hotel. Took about an hour in all - definitely worth it than spending money on a taxi.

All in all, a very pleasant stay but would say that off-peak would be better (May or Sept) to get away from the crowds and the intense heat!

Room Tip: Would be pretty upfront with the people at reception, although it didn't seem to work for us.

Dear Guests,
Thank you very much for a fabulous review. Apologies for a twin room – had we known you were not altogether happy we could have moved you to a double room during your stay. Pity we missed out on this opportunity. Great to hear of your experience of Lacroma. We hope you will be able to come back – maybe for your anniversary – we promise to accommodate you in a double bedded room!

This hotel was superb! As travellers who like to have somewhere to visit as well as some time at the pool and beach this really fitted the bill. An excellent spot if you want to spend a few days exploring Dubrovnik city. Make sure you get a Dubrovnik city pass - we got a 3 day pass which meant we could do the walls, museums and travel back and forward into the city by the bus which stops just outside the hotel about every 10 minutes. Make sure you buy any other bus passes at the hotel as its cheaper and quicker. Our room was overlooking the mountains - superb view - we opted not to pay the extra for a balcony as we wouldn't spend any time on it! Those who had one with a sea view didn't spend time there either as it was just too hot during August! Food choice is superb - we always managed to get an outside table - you can reserve if you prefer. The hotel itself was excellent - clean, varied music in the bar every evening - but don't miss the opportunity to head back into the city at night - bus runs until about 1 am and it's perfect for an after dinner explore with a buzz! Make sure you go to the beach at Valamar President which is just down a short path - you can get direct into the sea and sunbeds are all padded - staff will get you umbrellas etc. you can also reserve sunbeds - if not make sure you get there early as they are very busy. Main hotel sun beds were never a problem and you get towels provided fresh daily for the pool so don't bother taking any! Food choice superb - everything fresh and tasty - loved all of it! If you are looking for a city break then this hotel is perfect - it gives you the best of both worlds.

Room Tip: Room at the front of hotel overlooking mountains was lovely. If you want sea view pay extra for a b...

Have just come back from a wonderful 9 night stay in Dubrovnik.

The hotel was exceptional - staff very helpful, luxurious feel, breakfast buffet outstanding, clean outdoor and indoor pool with towels provided, use of President hotel's beach where you can book a sun bed. Booked a massage at the wellness centre, gym facilities good.

A short bus journey approx 20 minutes to the Old Town with its numerous restaurants and bars.

Booked with the hotel a mini bus transfer from the airport and back at 270 kn worth doing.
