“Good modern 4* hotel”
Reviewed 12 July 2010

My husband and I have just returned from the Valamar Lacroma, its a really good 4* hotel, all brand new, as it only opened in 2009. The style is minimalist and functional, not old fashioned, 70's style as some of the other hotels appeared. The rooms are modern, clean and the beds are sooo comfortable we wanted to take them home with us! The breakfast buffet is wonderful with a wide choice and great, freshly squeezed orange juice. The staff at the reception are really great, efficeint and friendly but the staff at the pool bar are quite aloof and not friendly and its takes ages to get served, they just don't seem to want to work there... Our recommendation to the hotel would be that they could encourage more people to eat and drink at the pool if the staff had some customer training! The location is good, it is 15mins by bus into the Pile Gate area where you enter the medieval town, there are buses every 15mins at the bust stop just across the road from the hotel, buses are crowded at all times from 5pm - 8/9pm so sometimes you have to stand up. The cost of the bus one way is 18 kunas per person. We got the bus back at night sometimes, but there were big queues for the bus, so we got a taxi quite a few times, which cost 100 kuna and took 5mins. We found that if you walked down from the hotel towards the sea and to the left of the hotel Neptune there was a fantastic bar/ restaurant "Levanat", down some steep steps and the service and food is excellent and it has a lovely sea view. From the Levanat you can walk along a lovely wooded, seaside path for about 10mins into Lapad beach resort, which has more bars and restaurants and made a change from the hustle and bustle of Dubrovnik town. A few evenings we walked to lapad for cocktails which were great and a lot cheaper at the beach "Cafe bar Shark" and ate at the "lapad beach grill" which has a prime seafront position above the sea and is really nice with a large outdoor bar with trendy seats in cream and dark wood - the food was great and it had a nice atmosphere, the service was friendly and attentive. We also tried the "Casa restaurant" which on reading trip advisor was supposed to be great - we had a very basic monkfish with vegtables which was overcooked and not good value - I wouldn't recommend it - I would say it may be living on previous better days. In summary we had a lovely holiday and would choose the valamar lacroma as a base again - we were glad we were staying there, rather than any of the other nearby hotels.

I recently returned from a 6-day visit to Dubrovnik and stayed on the Lapad Peninsula in the Valamar Lacroma. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this wonderful hotel! The hotel was new, modern, spacious and clean. The service was warm and friendly at all times. The views from our seaview room balcony were spectacular. The breakfast buffet was large and there is a lovely outdoor dining area to enjoy breakfast. There is a very nice indoor pool, and a pretty nice outdoor pool area (that was quite crowded during our visit). There is also access to the beach at a neighboring Valamar hotel. The beach is rocky and crowded so we preferred to explore some other local beaches. The spa and wellness center were clean and peaceful.
Although some reviews on this site complain about the hotel location, it was perfect for us! If you intend to travel to Dubrovnik during July or August, be prepared for swarms of people. We appreciated being able to escape the crowds to our spacious and peaceful oasis that was the Valamar Lacroma. The hotel is very easily reached by bus, and the buses run every 20 minutes picking up and dropping off about 100-150 meters from the hotel doors. The buses were very crowded and hot though.
Although I have written a very positive review, I think it is worth noting that this hotel is a 4-star hotel, not a 5-star. My review is based on that knowledge. If you are looking for a very fancy, special hotel, you may be disappointed by the Valamar Lacroma. If, however, you are looking for a very pleasant, affordable hotel, this may be a great pick for you!
I will highly recommend this hotel to friends and will look forward to staying here again on a future visit to Dubrovnik!

I stayed here for 4 nights in May, 2010. The hotel is a nice hotel, but there is very little located within walking distance. There is a bus to downtown Dubrovnik, but it takes almost 45 minutes one way. I like to be able to go out several times during the day any walk around. With the bus, I only felt like making one trip a day. There is very little shopping or restaurants (other than a few hotels). Although the Valamar restaurant buffet was good, it was overpriced. I would pay extra to stay in the downtown area.

Valamar is a really good hotel, it's brand new, the service is great, rooms are very clean and bathroom amenities are plentiful. The restaurant offers a variety of food (e.g. smoked salmon and rucola for breakfast).

The pool is nice, the wellness centre is very good.

The only down side of this hotel is that it is quite far from the beach compared to the other hotels in Babin kuk in Dubrovnik.

This resort hotel appears huge, and one is stunned by the unused space inside. Initially it seemed soulless, but this was reduced by the genuine warmth and helpfulness of everyone on the staff. Nothing was too much trouble. Breakfast and dinner were always buffet but the choice was varied each day, and many dishes were cooked freshly in the dining room itself. The bedroom, like everything else was spacious, with a very well-designed bathroom. The two large swimming pools (one indoor, one outdoor and a paddle pool for kids) were immaculate, but I always seemed to be the only person swimming when I went there. Similarly, the well-appointed spa service and fitness centre seemed rarely used. One got the impression of a large complex built for large conferences but the delegates never come. I don't know the typical cost of a stay since I was one of a large group, but the advertised price was approx £300 per room per night. Another downside is that the hotel is about 6km from the old city (altho' there's a bus every 20 minutes)

We returned from Valamar Lacroma on 23rd May and had a fabulous week there. One of my reasons for booking this hotel was just in case the weather was not good. Last year we stayed in Cavtat and the weather was excellent, this year it was colder in Dubrovnik than back home! The Spa was excellent and we used it for the first couple of days. I agree with a previous post and can highly recommend the Pina Coladas and the Mojitos at the pool bar! We were on B&B and the buffet style breakfast was excellent, something for every palate. Our room had a balcony and side sea view and I would recommend this as the rooms without balconies did not have the best views. Hotel staff were excellent. Our Thompson Rep Ariana was wonderful and gave us lots of tips and recommendations, she was always available even though we didnt need to trouble her. The grounds are spotlessly clean and the outdoor pool area excellent. Lovely sun beds with little canopies on the keep the sun off your face if you needed it. My only gripe if I had to mention one, would be the lobby bar advertised as being open until midnight closed around 11.30/11.40 while we were there. Not really a problem but we did like a nightcap when we came back to the hotel after being out for dinner. The hotel and holiday brochure advertised more bars, but due to being early in the season these were not open and it would have been nice to have known that. The cocktail bar was not open at all during our stay. The views and sunsets from the hotel were wonderful. Reception telephoned for taxis whenever we needed them. We walked to Lapad and taxi'd back a couple of times and ventured into the Old Town a few times. All in all we found this hotel ideally located for our holiday and I would not hesitate in recommending this or any of the hotels in the Valamar Group.

We stayed for five nights at the Valamar Lacroma from May 16th and I mainly chose this hotel because of the indoor pool and spa, as good weather was not guaranteed, It was pouring with rain and cold when we stepped off the plane, so it was lovely to be greeted warmly by the hotel reception staff who said they had a special room for us. They weren't wrong as our room had stunning views out to sea. We made use of the spa and indoor pool for the first few days when the weather was not so good and when the weather improved, we were able to make use of the outdoor sun chairs and pool bar service (great Pina Colada). There is a bus which runs to the Old City every 15 mins or so. If you want to make the most of the Old City and aren't interested in lazing by the pool, then perhaps you are better with a hotel in the main part of town. If you fancy a spot of relaxation and stunning sunsets, then this hotel fits the bill. One tip- try if you can to get a seaview room, makes all the difference.
