“Great Host!”
Reviewed 10 June 2014

I had the best experience in Ante's S&L. He is the nicest, most welcoming and helpful host I've come across in many years of traveling. The rooms are spotlessly clean, and prices are very reasonable.
I would recommend S&L to anybody who wants to stay in a nice place in Dubrovnik!

We arranged for Ante to pick us up from the airport. On the way, he gave us a guided tour and took us up to the lookout overlooking the Old Town, explaining the points of interest and a brief history. After we had settled in at the Guesthouse, he gave us a map and explained more points of interest, bus routes, restaurants, supermarkets and anything else we wanted to know. He even gave us a litre of juice. For the first night we stayed in the garden view room with ensuite, but moved to the sea view room, (with stunning sea views!) for the next two nights. We had originally planned on staying only 2 nights, but were so pleased with it, we decided on another. Luckily he had a vacancy for that night. This room was next to the shared bathroom, but he kept it free just for us. The rooms, bathrooms and well-equipped kitchen are all spotlessly clean. You feel like you are staying in someone's home, rather than in a hotel. They make you feel so welcome. It is a wonderful atmosphere.
It is a short bus ride away from the Old City. The first morning, Ante drove us there. We got lost on the way back because we got off at the wrong bus stop. The next day we took the bus both ways and didn't have any troubles finding our way back. The last morning Ante drove us to the bus station, even though it was early Sunday morning. Nothing is too much trouble for him.
I would just like to say that Ante and his wife go above and beyond all expectations. They make you feel like you are part of their family. I would definitely recommend staying here. It is the most welcoming place I have ever stayed.

Room Tip: Sea view rooms with a balcony are well worth it.

We stayed here two nights this week and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Ante picked us up from the airport (approx 200 kuna) and drove us to the guesthouse. He gave us a welcoming carton of juice and let us settle into our rooms. He then gave us a map of dubrovnik and showed us best places to eat, see and which buses to use. He recommended we buy a 1 day dubrovnik card which lets you into various museums, city walls and the buses etc. he also then drove us to the old town which was very kind pointing out various landmarks en route. He really went out of his way to help.

Although the room wasn't luxury it was perfectly clean and everything we needed. We had booked the apartment but on arrival chose to stay in the double overlooking the sea with a balcony. It has a shared bathroom but we didn't have to share as the single wasn't occupied. There is a kitchen and sitting area for guests to use too although we didn't really.

It is about 20 min walk to the old town and in a good quiet location with lovely view.

Ante drove us to the top of the hill early the next morning to see the stunning view and then to the old town. He really gave us such a good tour and explained the complex and troubled history of the city.

All in all, an excellent host - more than expected and certainly wouldn't get this sort of experience at a hotel. We would definitely recommend staying here.

This is my first review as I could not be bothered to write any previously. However I found this place to be so excellent I feel like I should write something about it. I was initially hesitant about booking this place as it seemed to be a distance from the Old City. It may appear far on a map, but please do not be deterred by the distance of the accomodation from the Old City. Ante's house is an easy 20-30 min walk to the Old City, even my middle-aged mum (who is not a keen stair climber at all) enjoyed walking to and from the Old City instead of taking the bus. Walking is perfectly manageable for anybody, the only stairs are the ones leading to the old city from the main road.

We initially booked to stay in the room with the garden view, as the ocean view room with ensuite was already booked and my mum was not keen on having the ocean view room with "shared bathroom". We changed our minds when Ante showed us the ocean view room with "shared bathroom". During our stay there was no guests in the single room and hence we had this bathroom all for ourselves. For those skeptical about sharing bathroom with someone, let me assure you that this "shared bathroom" is spotlessly clean, I believe the bathroom has been recently renovated/ refurbished. The bathroom tiles are shiny with a marble pattern, the shower area is big with a non-slip mat and even a rain shower!! The mirror is huge and spotless, dustbin is cleared regularly and the bathroom smells fresh and clean. To be honest the bathroom is much better and cleaner than the one I have in my own house...

Our room had an amazing view and I managed to get great photos of the sunset over the harbour in the evenings. The common kitchen area, the rooms and the bathrooms are furnished nicely with cute ornaments and a pots of flowers can be found in every corner of our room. The place was very tidy, and the attention to the interior decor made it very homely and pleasant.

Lastly, Ante is a helpful, kind and friendly host who gave us a good overview of the city when we first arrived, drove us to the Old City to show us the bus stops, took us up the mountain for birds eye view of the city, shared with us a little bit of Croatian history, fetched us to the bus stop on the last day and even bought my mum a bouquet of chocolates when he found out it was her birthday - without extra cost. His wife and daughters are also very welcoming.

In all, I highly recommend this place. I will be going back here if I do visit Dubrovnik again (and when that happens I have to hope that it will not be fully booked).

Everything about our stay at Ante's place more than exceeded our expectations. Ante was an amazing host-he went out of his way to ensure our stay was enjoyable. We stayed in the ocean view room - large, clean room with ensuite, a very comfy bed and a lovely balcony with stunning views.

Highly recommended!

Ante is a wonderful host and has very nice rooms. We made arrangements to have him pick us up at the airport (for a fee) which was a great service. He not only brought us directly to the guesthouse but also gave us interesting historical information about Dubrovnik along the way. He also brought us to the top of Mount Srd which saved us having to take the tram later.

Upon arrival, he let us choose which room we wanted and welcomed us with a carton of juice. He gave us a map and explained where main items were and how the bus systems got us from one place to another. Ante also recommended several restaurants to us and they were all excellent!

The rooms are all very clean and comfortable. We slept with the window open and although you could hear street noises, they were distant and not intruding at all. There is a shared kitchen with full facilities.

Only negative is that there are either a lot of steps or a big hill to climb any time you leave/return. This was not a problem for us but may impact some people. However, in Dubrovnik, there are many steps and hills so you probably can't avoid them!

This review is long overdue, but the memory of our stay at S and L Guesthouse hasn't faded. Our one night stay here was wonderful. Ante's hospitality began with offering a car trip to the top of Mount Srd, the one thing that was still on my husband's "to-do list" before leaving Dubrovnik. Our flight home was very early the next morning, and Ante got up before dawn and drove us to the bus station to catch the bus for the airport. The guesthouse is in a quiet neighborhood, and was spotless. We didn't have a harbor view room, but considered ourselves lucky to get any room there. We would definitely return!
