“Magical views from anywhere”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 July 2014

I was at a conference in Croatia and ended up at the Valamar. Didn't know quite what to expect, but WOW!, my wife and I were stunned by the location and beauty of the hotel. The service was great and the room (especially the views) were awe-inspiring. We would sit out on the balcony overlooking the outside pool deck and water (cliff-top views), and felt incredible looking at those beautiful sites. We spend four days there, and (had we done some research in advance), we would have stayed another four.

The great: The views, general service, rooms, and did I mention the views?

The "needs improvement": They need a mixologist at the bar that knows how to mix drinks. The bartender (just a title) can do simple ones, but you have to supervise or they will not come out right. This is something easy for them to fix.

Overall, if your looking for a great place to stay, enjoy the SPA scene (friends went and said it was well worth it), and want to take in some great views and enjoy life for the moment, this place should be considered top on your list.

Room Tip: The seventh floor is the lobby level, with zero being the beach deck and five being the pool deck...

We were very impressed when we arrived at the hotel, and were checked in very quickly and efficiently - unlike some of the other reviews we found the staff very friendly and helpful. We were not however given a drink on arrival; not sure why we missed out on this one!

Our room was great and, as has been mentioned, all rooms have sea views with a good size balcony complete with sun loungers, table and chairs. We took our son with us who stayed in the same room and whilst 3 towels of all sizes were provided, we only had 2 of everything else - glasses, chairs, etc. We did ask for another cup for tea/coffee, and whilst this was promptly brought, the maid then forgot to replenish the tea supplies throughout our week's holiday and often did not wash the used glasses either. The room however was otherwise cleaned very well. The air conditioning was great, free wifi, free TV and free safe. Residents also have free access to the 'well being centre' with Finnish sauna, infra-red sauna and steam room, together with jacuzzi and indoor and outdoor swimming pools (which were chlorine-free and just the right temperature bearing in mind the daily temperatures when we were there). The only services that had to be paid for were the massage and treatment rooms.

The restaurant was great, and we always got a good table outside to look at the fantastic view and watch the sunsets - mind you we tended to arrive soon after they opened. There is no maitre de so pointless waiting around to be seated - just grab the table you want. We found the restaurant staff very helpful and friendly, and the food was good - fresh fish and meats being cooked to order. Much of the food was served to you by a waiter, although the choice of vegetables could have been better. It actually got a bit repetitive after the first couple of days and perhaps a few pre-cooked meals (meat in sauces etc) could have been provided?

We do agree with other reviewers about the beach bar. The food was quite poor and they did always seem to be understaffed, although we did not find anyone unfriendly or rude. The beach is pebbly but not much anyone can do about that. We wore shoes to walk around and got into the sea down some steps at the side rather than risking the shelving pebbly entrance - much easier!

The no. 6 bus has it's terminus just outside the hotel and takes about 15 minutes into the old town and there always seemed to be one about to depart whenever we wanted to go - great service.

We would definitely recommend this hotel. We had a few niggles but overall the hotel was great, the staff were good and the location fantastic.

Room Tip: The higher rooms have better views.

We stayed at the hotel for a week in July, and having read mixed reviews on Tripadvisor beforehand, we hoped it was not true. On arrival at the hotel, our bags were collected from the taxi by the lobby staff and put onto a trolley. The reception staff were friendly and quick, they even give you a welcome drink on arrival.

Our standard doubleroom was on the 4th floor, with a wonderful view of the Elaphite Isles. It was a good size with super comfy double bed. However you can tell that the hotel had recently been through a renovation as there were still dust on the floor in the corners and the toilet bowl was not very clean around the edges. The TV does work however you have to point the remote behind the TV as this is where the receiver is. Here, we met our first hurdle: our bags were nowhere to be seen. We waited for 45 minutes before telephoning down to reception and after a further 20 minutes wait, our bags arrived except one of them was wrong. After much kafaffle, the right one was eventually found. The guy was very apologetic.

We had lunch at the beach side bistro, this is the one and only time we had food there. The food was tasteless, cold and slow to come. The beach is a pebble beach with lounge chairs. Most people came down at around 10am to 'reserve' a chair, which is done by throwing a towel on to it. The water was very clear however beware of sea urchins. Swim shoes are recommended and can be bought from the nearby shops. The beach was understaffed (no one was around) therefore no drinks were taken or help given.

We had dinner in the 5th floor restaurant. Service was extremely poor with the staff bordering on rude and ignorant. They also seem to not know what they were doing. No one guided us to a free table, we waited ages for the waiter to take notice of us and take our drinks order. However service did get better as the days went on, especially the waitresses. They were a thousand times better than the waiters. The food was alright and was changed every night. The breakfast was fantastic, looooads of choices available with freshly squeezed juices and assorted teas!!

The hotel was well equipped with water sports covered by Abyss diving. The wellness and spa area was also really good. The massages we had was divine. There is also nearby the Copacabana beach where kayaks can be rented, it is also a place to eat dinner and have some drinks. Outside the hotel is where the 6 bus stop, which takes you to old town. It is around 15 minutes and only costs 15Kuna.

All in all, the poor service is partially made up by the spectacular views and the activities however much more can be improved upon to make this hotel truly 5 star.

The newly refurbished President enjoys a stunning location on the Babin Kuk peninsula, about 15 - 20 minutes by taxi or bus to the Old Town of Dubrovnik. The entry is very impressive, as you would expect from a genuine 5 star hotel, but there are many features that really let the place down. Valamar is a newcomer to the 5* space and you can see it in a number of areas, particularly in the training (or lack of training) of the staff, who are surly at best. Cleaning of the rooms is perunctory, and as others have noted there are a multitude of little touches you expect in a five star hotel that are completely absent, such as waiter service on the beach, a decent menu for casual lunching at the pool or beach, a pool bar that stops service at 8pm (astonishing waste of the superb setting) and lack of heating in the pool (the sign said 26 degrees but there was no way it was more than 24). The rooms themselves are excellent, large and all with balconies overlooking the beach, so you really can't go wrong on that front. We travelled with our two daughters aged 6 and 9 and there was really no catering to their needs at all (this is not a family friendly hotel). Nightlife is practically non-existent which again is frustrating and a wasted opportunity for the hotel, given the distance one has to travel to get into the centre of the Old Town. It could be the real centre of attraction in Babin Kuk. Spa centre including steam room and two saunas was very pleasant, and the spa treatments are good value. Hard to imagine that an experienced luxury operator such as a Four Seasons or Hyatt would not do an immensely better job, but hopefully it will improve with time and experience. The gorgeous sunsets do make up for a few ills. All in all, we had a pleasant stay, as long as we didn't think of what we paid for it, which was a lot.

Room Tip: Get the best room you can afford. Rooms 3004 and 3005 are interconnected and a good choices for a f...

I loved the hotel! I think the view and the employees were the best part. The latter ones were always kind and helpful, making sure that they keep us happy. The room, pool, beach was very clean and pleasant. I would definitely go back!

Our one week stay at Valamar President Hotel it was like a dream! All hotel staff very competente, professional, kind and friendly. The rooms are big and balcony and view from there are very good. The best view rooms are the highest ones. Swimming pool like a dream and restaurant which excelent food quality. I really recommend to stay at this hotel which halfboard plan (breakfast + dinner). It's impossible to don't like their food, seafood, meat, fish, vegetables, all of them are prepared and cooked with love. The view from restaurant balcony it's breath cut...
The beach it's not sandy but it's not a problem because the hotel provides longchair and towels.
It's not close to Dubrovnick city center, but easly you can go there. Every 30min you can take bus there for 15min bus trip. Perfect hotel to relax, enjoy and just chill...
We will never forget how happy we were there, I hope to return there soon!

Room Tip: The best balcony views are on top located rooms.

I went to the hotel thinking it was luxurious. It was recently renovated and clean. My issue was that after having a rain storm, our room smelled like rotten eggs. We called and told the front desk. They said they would look at it. They sprayed air freshner in the AC unit. This worked for about 5 minutes. We were told they had no more rooms. Finally after continued complaining because my wife was getting nauseous, they found another room later that night. The TV didn't work so I called and asked if they could fix. They said they would have it fixed the next day. They still did not fix it and I had to call again later the next day after we returned from our day trip. I didn't go to watch TV but sometimes late at night I like to check up on the news. Finally, my flight was cancelled which made us one day late. Since we pre-paid for the hotel, I attempted to Skype with the hotel to let them know we would not be there the first night. I sent an email as well in hope that we would get a refund. After arriving, the front desk assured me that I was not charged for the first night and would get a refund. I was stupid for not getting that in writing. They are now refusing the refund. I have learned my lesson, never pre-pay for a hotel and get things in writing. It is not a horrible place and has potential but I will never stay at a Valamar Hotel due to my experience. In all fairness, the bed was comfortable and breakfast was good but all of the problem I had was not worth the $300 per night. Staff was never rude but I expected better service.
