Just returned from three nights and for a five star hotel thought prices quite good (e.g. 30% off cocktails from 5pm-8pm - so about £5.00 each - and served on a beautiful terrace overlooking the sea and the Old Town). Slight delay on check-in as room not ready (and we weren't the only ones). Pool excellent .. the private beach does not have sand - it is a terrace and you swim into the sea from it. Perfect location for Old Town (best to eat there as prices reasonable and plenty of quality choices). Hotel breakfast fantastic and tea/coffee making facilities provided in the room (if you ask). Would go again .....

This hotel is ideally situated for tourists. It is just five minutes walk from The Old Town of Dubrovnik. It has all the facilities a tourist could want, is a lovely stay, and the views from rooms facing the sea are stunning - the ocean, the island opposite and the Old Town and its harbour. I doubt there is a better-located hotel in Dubrovnik.

Room Tip: Select a room in the old part of the hotel, have a sea view and if possible a balcony.

We have just spent 8 days at the fabulous Hotel Excelsior, the staff, the food, the location are all excellent, we cannot recommend it highly enough.

Its close proximity to the old city makes for a great beach & city break combined.

Room Tip: Choose a room on the lower terraces with private terraces - perfect with sumptuous sunbeds

had a wonderful holiday at the Excelsior felt really well looked after. staff were friendly and professional. The view from our balcony was stunning and Dubrovnik itself was vibrant humming with life. The city does get very busy with cruises but theres lots to see away from the crowds. walk the walls go on the cable car.I cant rate the hotel or the city highly enough.

Room Tip: It is expensive but a deluxe room with balcony is worth it

Spent a week at the Hotel Excelsior in June, was here for meetings but had plenty of time to explore and relax as well. It is the ultimate location in Dubrovnik - after a week in the city, I can confirm that I wouldn't have wanted to stay anywhere else. The Ploce Gate is the side of town you want to be on - not overrun with cruise ship crowds, beautiful views of Lokrum Island and the Old City. Bountiful breakfast on the outdoor patio every morning, lounge chairs on the hotel "beach" looking into the crystal clear waters - it doesn't get any better. Quick five minute walk into the Old City, to the public (sandy) beach, to the grocery store. Very friendly and helpful staff. The waterfront view from your room is worth whatever it costs - just splurge! My room was in the old section of the hotel which was nice. I heard a few complaints from colleagues housed in the "new" section. My tips for getting the best out of Dubrovnik from your home base at the Excelsior: get up early to enjoy the early morning light on the water- just breathtaking. Then head into the Old City before the cruise ship hoardes arrive, do the city wall walk, watch the shopkeepers opening up for the day and then head back to the Excelsior by late morning, escape the crowds and enjoy the "beach". Hire a sailboat take you to Lopud Island for lunch. Swim a few hundred yards to a private beach that's only accessible by water: dive into the water in front of the Excelsior, turn left, swim along the coast past the next resort (Hotel Argentina), and the next feature on your left will be a little cave/cove with sand and no people. Or walk to a different beach (St Jakob) - much nicer than the beach close to the Old City. Walk east from the hotel down the road along the coastline, past the Hotel Argentina, Villa Dubrovnik, and other houses to the church of St Jakob. Walk behind it and down the steps - great beach and great view of the Old City! Have fun!

Room Tip: The waterfront view is worth every penny!

This hotel has a breathtaking location. It also has a wonderful structure with many great places to eat and drink. But... The staff just lack motivation. They don't seem to have a sense of purpose. Things take forever and requests can seem like a burden. The food in the hotel was the worst we had during our stay in dubrovnik. I struggle to see how this hotel is five stars. It's got the shell but no soul. Pitty because it could be great.

We have just enjoyed a wonderful two week honeymoon based at this hotel. From the moment we arrived the service was excellent. We had booked a deluxe room so enjoyed a fantastic view from our balcony of the Old Town and Lokrum Island and had all of the amentities you would expect in a hotel of this standard. We stayed on a bed and breakfast basis and the breakfast buffet was very good quality with a huge choice. Our room was very comfortable with very efficient air conditioning, although a little too noisy to operate whilst sleeping. Pillows were very flat so we had to ask for more. The food from the hotel restaurants and bar was of a very good quality although there was not a huge choice. On two occasions we had dinner at the Prora Beach Restaurant and whilst the views are good the strong winds from the sea spoiled the experience somewhat on one of the evenings. The winds also affected our enjoyment of sitting on the Terrace Bar a couple of times, and using the parasols and perhaps the hotel should consider some options of ways to lessen the effects of the winds for their guests. The indoor pool and spa was excellent and very enjoyable to use. However, we did become aware during our stay that local children were swimming up to the hotel from the neighbouring beach and using the indoor pool, jacuzzis, sauna etc. On one day we observed 14 boys doing this which turned the environment in the pool area into one of a rowdy public pool rather than a 5 star hotel. Hotel employees were aware of this happening and really need to do something about it as it is not acceptable for the paying guests enjoyment of the facility to be spoiled in this way.

The hotel is in a fantastic location to enjoy the Old Town and to access boat trips and from our observation probably the best location of all hotels in Dubrovnik. It is a wonderful city with a huge choice of restaurants, cafes, historical sites and musical entertainment. We certainly hope to return again.

Room Tip: Deluxe room to enjoy the amazing views.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Since opening in 1913, the Excelsior has become an iconic landmark among the five-star hotels in Dubrovnik. This time-honoured building – a blend of old and new – is uniquely located on a cliffside, with magnificent views from every floor, over to the island of Lokrum in one direction and the Old Town in another. Recognised as one of the finest hotels in the Mediterranean by the UK’s Sunday Times newspaper, it is only when you visit that you can fully appreciate the spectacular setting: the tranquil gardens in which to stroll; four fine-dining restaurants, all offering panoramic views of the Adriatic Sea; a private beach, back-dropped by the UNESCO-protected Old Town. Among the luxury hotels in Dubrovnik, the Hotel Excelsior is the benchmark to which others aspire. ... more   less
