“Blissful.....”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 August 2014

Had a week at the Excelsior in July. Have stayed at many 5 star hotels over the years but this was exceptional. Location is excellent, just outside the old town. Had a sea view suite with balcony with great views of the town. Spa is superb. By far the biggest plus though are the staff. Friendly, efficient and charming whether at reception, in the Spa or at the beach terrace. We celebrated a Birthday when there - and we're delighted to receive a birthday cake unprompted with a note of congratulations. Absolutely recommend - and look forward to returning.

Room Tip: Get sea view suite with balcony - great views.

This hotel is in a spectacular location -5 minutes walking distance of the old town. The views are amazing. The rooms are average. The hotel is clean, but shows a little wear and tear. However, for such a pricey hotel, we found the service to be poor, especially at the Thai restaurant and Abakus Bar. The wait staff were rude and it took a long time to get service. In fact, I walked out of the Abakus Bar because the waiter never returned after he brought me my drink. I wanted a second drink, but after waiting another 40 minutes, I became frustrated and walked out. Meanwhile, the waiter was over at the bar chatting with the bartender and serving other customers. We had a similar experience at the Thai restaurant. We won't return to the Excelsior next year, mostly because of the poor service. .

Location: 5 minutes away from old city, great walk
View: Simply the best view in Dubrovnik
SPA: Good massage and SPA
Hotel: good hotel but for a 5 stars hotel it doesn't give this much although it is spacious and a big hotel but i've went to much better 5 star hotels

In general i would go back there because i think it is the best in Dubrovnik

It's not the cheapest place to stay, However with it's ideal location for the old town and the quality of the hotel facility's you can understand why it's a 5 star hotel, we'd happily book to stay here again.

Let me state this clearly: this hotel is a nice starting point for discovering the more and more touristic becoming beautiful Dubrovnik. But when you wear five stars, one is allowed to have high expectations.

The standard and deluxe rooms are really small. You should be lucky to get an upgrade to a superior room, otherwise you will desire the time you stayed in that three star hotel with above average sized rooms.

Due to the construction of the bathrooms, it is difficult to clean it - which can be seen when you arrive. The bath is divided from the rest of a bathroom with a plastic movable 'wall' which was really dirty in our rooms on the bottom, I really don't want to guess what these black spots are. The temperature of the air conditioning is limited, why it never really became cool enough in our room.

The breakfast. Well, it is not bad. But that's all I can say about it. The 'fresh' fruit is dry. If you want to take one of the juices - sugar drinks - or water, you are forced to put it in glasses that are so small, you couldn't even imagine that they are still in use. The personnel works as an oiled machine, but they don't give you the five star attention. By far.

Most food in the restaurants seems to be pre-cooked and cannot be changed. The vegetarian wrap with cheese, cannot be ordered without the cheese. Why not? Is it really too much to prepare a fresh wrap, cut some vegetables and replace the cheese with a different dressing? Prices of the food are way above average for the city - sometimes outrageous - and the restaurant at the beach shares large parts of the menu upstairs. They don't take reservations downstairs either, not even for a group of eight people in 30 mins ("we don't do that").

This would be a great three star hotel in a five star building, on average four stars - maybe. But there is a lot to improve, small details: the breakfast times that are mentioned in the book you find in your room got changed since it was printed, and the sushi restaurant that is described in the booklet is closed for months already as well.

Let's not talk about the gym. By times there were plastic cups all over the place (possibly because there is no bin), like no-one ever cleans it, the instructions sign on the wall asks you to close the door to make air conditioning work properly, but the door cannot be closed. And the equipment that is placed there screams to be replaced. I think the 90s want their five star hotel back.

If you call yourself a five star hotel, you should also behave like it. I would give this hotel a 3,5/5 if it would've been a four star hotel, but if you expect the best - you will be disappointed early or later.

Too bad: Dubrovnik is really beautiful and there is no reason why this company could not reach a higher level.

We stayed for a pleasant week end in hotel excelsior. Nice rooms with great sea side views. Not all that large but you will stay on the large sea side terrace. A 10 minute walk from the old center of Dubrovnik and 5 minutes from a night club. This hotel offers a large breakfast buffet combined with a la carte food. Stay in room 007 this room has a nice sea side balcony.

Where do I start? Well, if it’s good enough for the Hollywood/Political/Royal ‘A list’ types whose visits are recorded in one of the hotel’s public areas then it’s probably good enough for most travellers! Would we go back again? Absolutely. In fact it’s now the destination we’ll compare all other holidays against.

Situated right on the waterfront, a10 minute stroll along a very gradual slope from Pile Gate, and the Old Town proper it’s ideally located. (When I say on the waterfront I don’t mean a stone’s throw away; given a good run up I could probably have jumped into the water from my balcony!). The whole establishment is spotlessly clean and the staff are very eager to please. Once you get used to the eccentric system of numbering/naming floors it’s pretty much a dream destination. The views both of the old town and the surrounding water are beautiful beyond belief.

The hotel is in two parts; the original stone building and a modern extension. Many rooms appear to have have been recently refurbished. (See below for our experiences of both- this may explain some of the mixed reviews).

Breakfast was more than ample with both hot plate and fresh cooked options on offer. Other than breakfast we only ate in the Hotel once (with so much on the doorstep we liked to explore). This was a lunchtime snack and was both substantial and of good quality. There are Fish and Thai Restaurants on site, both of which looked lovely.

There’s a small fitness area- one each of each main cardio machines and a small multi gym. The indoor pool area is exceptionally good. In our experience many hotel indoor pools are ill lit, small, overly warm affairs. This however ticked all the positive boxes- it’s actually part of the upmarket spa complex on site.

One particularly nice aspect was the management of sun beds- often a bone of contention. On a morning ‘sufficient’ beds are set out neatly. Once they are full, or you just want one in a different location, the staff on duty simply get however many you want out of storage- the same for umbrellas. We stayed in July and there was never a shortage of beds- or indeed lots of beds reserved by towels but not being used. The proximity to the sea does mean that if there’s a swell parts of the deck can be out of bounds for a while. This is a small price to pay for the wonderful views and general ambience. (I presume that if the weather is so bad that the deck becomes awash, sunbathing and swimming are out of the question anyway!)

Negative points?

For the first in many holidays we booked using a package operator; a family of three in one room. The first room we were given was in the ‘new’ part of the hotel and we still struggle to comprehend where our daughter’s bed was going to go. It was a nicely proportioned double room but there simply wasn’t floor space for a cot, let alone a ‘roll out’ bed. This was raised with management and within 15 minutes we were moved into a larger room in the hotel’s ‘old’ part. Whether the initial room allocation was our travel agent’s or the hotel’s doing we’ll never know but it did give the opportunity to experience both parts of the accommodation. If we had the choice we’d stay in the old part every time; the rooms there have a much more airy feel to them. I suspect that reviewers commenting on the room size were in the ‘new’ part.

As mentioned above the Hotel is on the waterfront- the distance between the building line and edge of the jetty can’t be more than 25 feet. Unfortunately there’s no beach, it’s a jetty with pool ladder type steps straight into the sea. If you have mobility problems accessing the water could be difficult and we’d certainly be very nervous of having a toddler around as there’s no ‘shelf’ it’s straight into fairly deep water. (In fairness the Hotel doesn’t market itself at families with young children but if that’s how you are travelling, or you have mobility problems, the indoor pools offer a very good alternative).

Conclusion
In all a first class experience best summed up by a conversation with a woman on the balcony of the next room. She enthused about how much she loved the place, how beautiful it was and that she posted so many photos on Facebook her friends thought she was crazy. Not unusual you may say? Well it is when the woman is question was our Dubrovnik born maid!
A fantastic stay.

Room Tip: Rooms in the 'old part' are lighter and airier

Since opening in 1913, the Excelsior has become an iconic landmark among the five-star hotels in Dubrovnik. This time-honoured building – a blend of old and new – is uniquely located on a cliffside, with magnificent views from every floor, over to the island of Lokrum in one direction and the Old Town in another.
