“Wonderful hotel, beautiful gardens, stunning location, - my idea of heaven!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 September 2010

We've just spent a wonderful week at the Grand Villa Argentina, and I can't believe that the negative reviewers stayed at the same hotel!

We thought the location, to the east of the old city, is much better than that of hotels set on the main road west of the city near the very busy bus station and taxi ranks. Along the road leading from the hotel to the Old City there's the museum of modern art, a folklore concert centre, car rental offices, a small tourist point, a post office and post box, an ATM, a mini market, bread shop, postcard shops. It's also conveniently situated for the old port, where you can get boats to the island of Lokrum (well worth exploring), the town of Cavtat along the coast, and excursion boats to the bigger islands.

Dubrovnik is the most beautiful city, and the Argentina made our holiday perfect. We had a very pleasant room in the modern hotel and were lucky to have a corner balcony, with views over part of the garden and along the coast. Room cleaning, towel and toiletries replacement was exemplary. Some rooms do overlook the terrace restaurant, which partially obscures the sea view, but there are such fabulous views from the restaurants and gardens that this didn't matter, and we were never disturbed by noise.

We really appreciated the calm and tranquil atmosphere, very helpful reception staff, with excellent English (a special thank you to Kristina for going to the trouble of phoning for bus times); delightful waiting staff, some with very good English; excellent breakfasts, with a huge choice, served on a terrace with sea and city views. We had a good meal at the Victoria restaurant on our first evening, but there are so many good restaurants in Dubrovnik that we wanted to try.

We loved the beautiful gardens, laid out on terraces, linked by steps ( there's a bonus to those steps you know - toned thighs!) and planted with tall palms and cypresses, fragrant pine trees with wonderful twisting curving trunks, oleanders, bougainvillea and masses of Pittosporum tobira shrubs, which have the most fabulously fragrant creamy white flowers in early summer. There are quiet, shady corners to sit - absolutely delightful.

We always managed to get loungers in the scrupulously clean pool area, (admittedly it was September, so maybe not as busy as high season) and enjoyed having direct access to sea swimming - this is not a sandy beach coast and there are only a few hotels with their own "beach".

... and a final note about Dubrovnik - the public and restaurant toilets were the cleanest we have ever seen - there was always hot water, soap and towels or hand driers.

This hotel is the finest on the Adriatic.
My husband and I stayed there at the tail end of August, when temperatures were still in the mid-30s. We could easily stroll into the old city to appreciate the sites, but after the first day we opted to indulge in the comfort and elegance of the hotel. The hotel's peaceful beach is a mini-paradise carved from the clifts on the crystal clear sea. The service on the hotel's beach was top-knotch. Comfortable deck-chairs, with a stunning view of Old Dubrovnik. The salt-water pool is clean, comfortable and simple, and the snorkling around the hotel is spectacular.
The hotel's restaurant is a dream. The wine, dishes and service - excellent. The restaurant offers fresh, delicious local produce and wine, along with standard French cuisine. The location again is stunning. Beautiful view of the sea and the old town.
I couldn't imagine a more perfect retreat.

The hotel is in a good location, in that you can walk (10-15 mins) down into Dubrovnik, and spectacular views are available from the hotel and the pool. There is a bus stop outside the hotel if you don't want to walk. The walk back to the hotel is mainly uphill and can be quite strenuous. Taxis can be quite expensive as Dubrovnik has a one-way system, meaning the journey back to the hotel is a long way around (would cost over £10)

The pool area is accessed by a lift and has good quality loungers with cushions, directly on the edge of the sea. The pool is quite small so most people swim in the sea. The steps out of the sea are steep. The sea is too deep to stand up in. But it is very nice to swim in. The area is quite crowded with sun loungers, which is not ideal, and sometimes all the beds are taken, but the pool attendants keep an eye on who has gone away and will find you a space. They provide pool towels free of charge. The pool bar and toilets are up some steep steps.

Breakfast was very good (fruit, cereals, cold meats, bacon, sausage, egg, cake, juice, champagne, coffee, tea) and is served on a patio with spectacular views of Dubrovnik and the sea.

The Victoria restaurant, seemed very expensive and the menu limited (most dishes had truffles in), so we didn't use it.

The hotel is made up of several villas. We were aware of this, but not that one of them was actually across the road from the main hotel building. The result was that we had a nicely appointed room, with a partial sea view, but it was overlooking a street rather than a garden or the sea. Traffic could be quite noisy at night. The air conditioning was poor.

All in all I would say that the hotel is very good, especially if you want to get out into Dubrovnik every night/day, but make sure you know what building you'll be staying in.

To get to the hotel, you could get a taxi from the airport (250-300 Kuna) or do like we did, and get the airport shuttle bus into Dubrovnik old town (35 kuna each), then a taxi to the hotel (90 kuna).

We also travelled ontoa Cavtat hotel for the last few days, taking a boat from the harbour in Dubrovnik for 50 kunas each. Cavtat is 10 mins from the airport so it is a different way of getting there from Dubrovnik. Taxi from Cavtat to Dubrovnik airport is 80 Kunas

8.5 kunas = £1

We just came back from holidays in beautiful Dubrovnik; we stayed in The Grand Villa Argentina which is an outstanding five star hotel. The service was fantastic all staff ready to help at all times, management personnel was always present, very caring and disposed to give all they can. I am very peaky about food and in this place it was very well presented, delicious and healthy, there were many fresh healthy options and I just loved it!.. We are delighted with this Hotel, not only because it is a fantastic place but its staff and specially the management team were outstanding, friendly and helpful, they really made me feel welcome.

Having being in Dubrovnik for the first time, The Hotel Grand Villa Argentina is an amazing Hotel, we have had one of the best holidays ever, The hotel, facilities, Victoria fine dining restaurant, bars and its food are at 5 stars hotel level, quality of food and service are impeccable. We enjoyed and spent most of the time on the private beach that the Hotel have, a unique place with a terrific and incredible sew view over the Lokrum island and the old town.
The service and team at the Hotel were always fulfilling our expectations, very professional and attentive even the management team always visible and ready to engage short conversations with guests. We are very impress and for sure we will return next year to this fantastic destination and Hotel.

Reading some of the reviews having just returned from Dubrovnic, the choice seems obvious, but of course before you go for the first time, it's difficult to know what to compromise on and what not to. So hopefully I can help...

The plus side of the Argentina is the location - gorgeous views of the island across the water, 10 minutes from the Old Town, and two local beaches to either side of the hotel.

The downsides: it is definitely not 5 star. Or anywhere close. All the other 'average' reviews here are spot on. Poor service (maids entered our room almost every day with barely a knock; room service trays left behind, loo roll not replaced, used hotel bathroom gels left knocked over rather than thrown away and replaced with new ones, plates left on tables at breakfast so you pile up with dirty dishes in front of you). The food at the beach restaurant (the only option if you don't fancy getting up and trawling into town for lunch on a hot day) was embarrasingly poor. The sort of food you might conjure up as a student; canned tuna spaghetti, canned tuna salad (limp lettuce, teeny portion). I asked for a piece of fruit and was charged £6 for a nectarine. I ordered a banana shake; £9. £3 for a coke by the pool.

The pool area: we booked the hotel because we wanted a swimming pool. Tip: no need. Most hotels have indoor pools (as does this one), but basically you use the sea (and the pool is salt water anyway, and slightly yellowing and 70's). The sunloungers are lovely and have nice padded bits, but it is intensely crowded in the middle of summer and you'll find that the good ones are reserved by the pool staff for clever guests who pay them off at the beginning of the week and sometimes don't turn up all day, leaving you longingly gazing at the best appointed, unavailable but empty loungers...very annoying, but rather than stick to your morals as we did, I suggest if you can't beat 'em, join 'em and tip off the staff to save them for you too! You will probably still find you are practically sitting on top of someone next to you as the pool area is simply too small to accomodate a good turn out on a lovely day.

What else...

The reception staff do not have accurate information about the trips to local islands (including sending us out of town a day in advance to buy tickets for a trip to Miljet when in fact the office is only open for short windows prior to departure, and you have to just turn up on the day, an hour before the boat leaves, and queue).

Breakfast is fine (for a 3 or 4 star hotel), but I would expect a bit better than canned fruit.

Having reread some reviews, I would suggest checking out the Excelsior which is just next door, or if you want to splash out, Villa Dubrovnic, which we looked at when we found it on our last day and wished we'd stayed there (it's brand new and very modern - not my style but little other choice it would seem).

Overall, do not go to Dubrovnic expecting the sort of quality you would get in the South of France, Italy or anywhere else in fact, but expect to pay Cap d'Antibes prices, I'm afraid. The food is also generally so bad (and again, very expensive) it would put me off going again. I would suggest that a long weekend (5 days) would be MORE than enough to laze by the pool and enjoy the clear water, but I would't go back, and I have to say, would choose Greece, Italy, Capri, Sardinia, or anywhere in France over here. The Old Town takes 30 minutes to marvel and enjoy, and then the point of being there ends.
