We drove up through Albania, around the Bay of Kotor in Montenegro, and into Croatia, where we enjoyed the spectacular drive along the coast road to Dubrovnik. My research had yielded nothing affordable for our budget inside the fortress walls, so I opted for the Hotel Lapad, which is across from the main ship terminal on the waterfront. The hotel has a lovely facade and front side swimming pool, and a glass enclosed restaurant like a gazebo. The room we had was a double, but the bed seemed enormous. The room itself was spacious, and the bathroom was super! We wanted to take it along to every hotel on our itinerary! Double sinks, antifog mirrors, super nice shower/bath, seperate toilet closet. The products provided for the bath were superior Croatian lavendar products, and there was an adjustable, lighted makeup mirror on one side. Staff were friendly and helpful. We were pleased to get a room for a reasonable rate even without a reservation (it was still only mid-April). A taxi was called for us to take to dinner in the old town, a mere five minutes drive. Our own car was safe in secure parking. After our road trip over to Hvar Island we returned south and stayed at Lapad again on our last night in Croatia. Again, no reservation, but a room was found, and within our budget! The breakfast buffet was luxurious, and the staff really kept an eye on coffee cups! We had porters to assist us with loading and unloading the car, even in the pouring rain. We were very impressed and would certainly recommend this hotel to anyone with an eye for quality.

We stayed a week at the Lapad. It was beautifully clean. The staff were very charming and accomodating. The rooms were lovely and modern with classic furnishings. The bathrooms were particularly luxurious, although all glazed to the bedroom, so not so good if you want to be private. The food in the main restaurant was very nice, and reasonably priced for a hotel restaurant. The buffet breakfast in the mornings was comprehensive and well-stocked and service stations well rotated. The fresh coffee served by waiters was as one would expect for a 4 star hotel. The hotel is perfectly placed for cruiseship spotting, and the bus into town leaves just down the road. The tickets can be bought at the reception desk (cheaper). It is a short ride into town, but the bus is VERY crowded. The walk is doeable, but the middle section is quite industrial, so not the nicest walk. A taxi to the old town wasn't so expensive... we took this option one night, as a concert in town meant we would have had to wait nearly an hour for the bus (normally every 10-15 mins, untill about 10:30pm, then they go to hourly).

All in all an excellent hotel and we would certainly consider staying there again.

Room Tip: Rooms in the new building have balconies and are at the back of the hotel. Ones with a sea-view get...

First of all I want to thank the Dining room staff Petar and Stephen for going out of their way to make sure I was served with food catering for my special dietary requirements (low salt). It was clearly a pleasure for them to serve me in this way and took a lot of stress from my holiday and the worry that I may be ill, so I'm reluctant to complain about anything. They themselves and the chefs were 'stars'. Reception staff were lovely, very friendly and efficient. I can't comment on the buffet food as mine was special but my husband enjoyed it, although there was a tendancy to overcook the fish, but that aside there was a fantastic variety of food, and lovely desserts and fruit to compensate the guilt! Bar staff were very friendly and helpful too, although we couldn't get away from football in there as it was the European cup and there were 2 TV's! Others were enjoying it, so that was fine. We found fruit in our room for my husband's birthday and a happy birthday letter, which was a nice touch. Hospitality, service and welcome was definitely 5* with a family atmosphere. I thought the rooms rather dark, and was glad of the balcony to let the light in. I did notice that the balcony was not very clean actually, however the bathroom and room were kept clean. Could do with some kind of card to indicate a change of sheets or not.....I don't know how often they were changed to be honest! The hotel, as people have said is in the most beautiful position by the harbour with mountains around. Cruise ships can be viewed from the pool area. It was disappointing not to be able to relax on a sunbed at times, as there was certainly a shortage, especially to be in the shade (and only 11 umbrellas?). Temperatures soared to 36c when we were there. Croatia exceeded our expectations and it is really worth going on the trip to Montenegro and Mostar in Bosnia, hopefully you will have Tony from Gulliver Travel as your guide, he was fantastic, so interesting. We had the most wonderful time and would gladly return, maybe at a slightly cooler time of the year.

Room Tip: Try and get a room with a balcony.

Dear Sandra S,

First of all we would like to thank you for the time that you have dedicated to the Hotel Lapad posting this kind review full of details about your stay.
It's so flattering for us to read about 5 star hospitality and service!

The whole staff is so grateful for the beautiful words that you used to describe the courtesy of their services (from the reception to the breakfast room).

I am very glad to know that you had a very pleasant stay in Dubrovnik at our hotel and I will share with all the team your comments, especially with Petar and Stephen. They will be more than happy.

We are very sorry about your negative experience of the balcony cleanliness. We have already passed your important information to the housekeeping department. Please do accept our sincere excuses.

Regarding the pool area there is a limited number of the sunbeds because of the pool size but I hope that in spite of that you enjoyed your time.

We hope to welcome you again in our lovely hotel and our beautuful country.

Kindest regards,

Katica

Our group of seven motorcyclists stayed overnight here in mid May. We took the (old, dank, dreary Jadrolijna) ferry to Bari moored opposite the Lapad the following evening at 10pm. Lapad is a really nice, bright, modern hotel with a good food and nice rooms. Lovely swimming pool too.
The staff were very helpfull and the parking for the bikes on the site was safe.

A 35 minute walk (first part uphill, but then all downhill) brings you to the entrance to the old town. Beautifully restored after the 'homeland war' in 1990 the old town has lots of restaurants, shops and pubs. To walk the circumferance of the city wall takes about an hour and has some very steep stone steps, but is a must do. The cable car to the fort/war museum on top of the mountain is very well worth doing too.

Would recommend the Lapad to anyone.

We found the service, cleanliness, food and friendliness at this hotel second to none. The only slight problem is if you want a relaxing day at the pool it is too small for sufficient sun beds.
If we return to Dubrovnik we would stay here again.

Dear ChrisLeicester,

We are happy that you fully enjoyed your stay with us and appreciate your compliments.

We noticed your remark regarding the pool. It is small due to the traditional architecture that Hotel Lapad boasts.

We hope to welcome you back soon.

Just returned from a week at the Lapad, this is an excellent hotel. I can't think of anything to complain about, even found the evening meals acceptable for a buffet style dinner despite what some other reviewers have said. The staff are polite & very helpful, the position is great, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. I would definately recommend this hotel

Excellent class hotel Room 39 looked up the hillside. Very spacious. Shower equipped with modern jets was welcome on very hot days. Excellent breakfast included. Waterfront rooms extra 20 Euro's. Staff very pleasant and helpful. All you could want. Bus lets you off back home from the Old City just a few steps down the roadway. Ride down to the end and back around instead of walking a bit for the first stop back to town.
