“Nice hotel with some shortcomings”
Reviewed 26 June 2014

We spent last week in lovely Dubovnik at the Lapad Hotel. The hotel looks very modern and has very modern amenities. I loved the fact that the suite had a sliding door for privacy and each section had a verandah and enough storage space. The location was also very good and you could step out and take walks around Lapad bay and also walk to the old town. Of course, the walk to town was fraught with danger with very narrow or non existing pavements and traffic simply whizzed by all the time. The front desk staff were very helpful and friendly but the serving staff at the breakfast buffet were downright rude. They need to be trained to smile at customers and actually serve! It would take a long time to catch someone's eye to get a simple cup of coffee. The buffet, however, was absolutely terrific. One other minor source of dissatisfaction: the pool is in the front of the hotel. When tourists arrive by the busloads, the front gate which encloses the swimming pool is closed and many of the guests arrange themselves around the pool in various stages of undress in full view of both the bar and the restaurant. Not the most pleasant sight. We almost welcomed the rains! All in all, however, we had a pleasant experience. The Croatians in Dubrovnik are very warm and welcoming to the visitors to their beautiful city.

Room Tip: Ask for an upper level room with a nice view if possible.

Stayed here for our final night in Croatia and booked a room with a sea view. The view of the pool and sea was great!

Pleased to have breakfast included in the booking which was a buffet and more than adequate to fill up on.

The hotel location is not great if you want to be amongst the action in the evening but it is an ok base if you want a pool and a bit more relaxation.

First impressions are important and upon our arrival we were impressed by the efficient and professional service we recieved at check in. Even though we were a wee bit disappointed by the size of the room (looks bigger on their website) we found it to be spotlessly clean and quite comfortable. In fact the whole complex was immaculate. The breakfast was very impressive and quite possibly the best buffet breakfast we have had in recent times. The pool area again was really nice with lovely views. Unfortunately we didn't get to stay at the pool very much as the week we stayed was ruined by constant thunderstorms. Beware the road outside the hotel is a death trap! There is no footpath as such and the cars and multitude of mopeds & motorbikes feel pedestrians are fair game.... The old town really is something to behold with walking the wall being a highlight. (early morning or late afternoon only due to steps, heat and tourists from cruiseships over crowding the narrow walkway) One of the attractions of Dubrovnik is the trips to the islands but due to inclement weather we did not get to see these attractions but they came highly recommended from friends. If you like nice sandy beaches avoid the beach at the end of the strip 10 mins walk from the hotel as it is pretty drab. All in all the highlight of our trip was the old town with the Hotel Lapad coming in a good second best.

We were reasonably happy with all aspects of the hotel. The staff were efficient, with some seemingly indifferent to the customer, I guess it is their manner.
However, for a couple who enjoy a stroll, we found our options lacking. The small road fronting the hotel was very busy and not pedestrian friendly. The walk to the old town, enjoyed by others, again we felt was very busy with traffic on narrow pavements. The area around Lapad beach was tired with the walks limited.
Whilst the above is outside of the hotel's influence, for like minded people, they may care to look to Babin Kuk area or Cavtat

Dear erictwiss,

We are pleased to read you were reasonably happy with all aspects of the hotel and its efficient staff.
It is disappointing you were let down by the walking area around Lapad and the location.
Being a city hotel Hotel Lapad boasts the position by the sea overlooking Gruž port.

We are glad you enjoyed the stay overall and we hope to welcome you again on your next visit to our beautiful country.

Best regards,

The hotel was very clean with a lovely pool and bar. The rooms are of a nice modern design with very comfortable beds, however although very modern looking the bathrooms are dreadfully designed, with no proper shelf to place toiletries only a recessed area at the side of a bowl sink so that everything gets soaked every time you wash. They put the hairdryer there too so that also gets wet and in addition the cord does not stretch enough for one to see in the mirror. Also the the sink has no proper plug so my husband had to shave using running water.

The restaurant offers a buffet dinner but when our companions only wanted a small salad (which was on the buffet) as they had eaten a large lunch, the manager wanted to charge for the full buffet or offer them a very large a la carte salad, as we were a group of six this did somewhat spoil our evening.

My family, a party of 7 (6 adults and 1 baby), spent 4 nights at Hotel Lapad last week. I booked a superior suite and 2 superior rooms, as well as airport transfers in a 7 seater mini-van. I went to great lengths to ensure that a baby seat would be fitted to the vehicle and received email confirmation from the hotel that this would be the case. We were very disappointed on arrival to find that there was no baby seat, and the driver knew nothing about it. After something of a hissy fit, the driver eventually managed to borrow a baby seat from a nearby car rental depot and our journey from the airport began.
We arrived at the hotel and checked in. We had requested a cot for one of the rooms, and although this was provided, there was no mattress! The hotel had simply folded over a quilt and wedged it into the cot. We brought this to the attention of the manager and requested that a mattress be provided, but this was refused. More disappointment.
Bathrobes and slippers were missing from the suite and had to be requested. The TV remote control didn't work and when this was reported a surly "technician" arrived at the door with a replacement. No explanation or apology, just a replacement remote control handed over and he left. The replacement didn't work either, so we opted to work out the buttons on the side of the TV instead. More disappointment.
Breakfast the following morning (and every morning) was delicious. Plenty of choice, fresh and tasty, and replenished frequently. Plenty of staff in evidence, copious coffee, and tables cleared promptly. Breakfast exceeded our expectations.
"Pre-dinner drinks by the pool" quickly became a tradition, and again exceeded our expectations. A great range of cocktails mixed really well and always served with a smile. Great service - thanks.
More great service from the lovely lady who made our rooms up each day (rooms 31, 34, and 37), she obviously takes pride in her work and has high standards - thank you!
I visited the reception desk the day before we left to settle up the accommodation part of each room's bill. I was surprised to see a charge for "TKOM" on each bill and when I asked for an explanation was advised that this was the airport transfer charge. I pointed out that this was one booking and that we had travelled in one vehicle. The reception staff offered no explanation or apology but simply removed the charge from 2 of the bills. Had I not spotted it, they would have effectively triple charged us for the transfer. At the same time, I arranged the transfer back to the airport for the following morning, and stressed once again the agreement for the provision of a baby seat. Later that day, as I walked past the reception desk (so when it was convenient for the staff rather than me), I was advised that although the vehicle was now booked, the driver doesn't have a baby seat. It took a pretty forceful conversation to persuade them to lift the phone and come up with a solution. It should be said that I'd offered to bring a baby seat with us from the UK if the hotel didn't think they'd be able to provide one, but they confirmed by email that they could accommodate it.
We spent a lot of money with this hotel, but as we checked out at the reception desk, nobody asked whether everything had been OK or whether we'd enjoyed our stay. Nobody wished us a safe journey or said goodbye. Nobody even said thank you!
From reading earlier reviews I'm sure our experience is unusual, but I for one would not recommend this hotel and certainly wouldn't give them my business again.

First day of our road trip. Staying at Hotel Lapad for 3 days. First impressions are excellent. Staff are very friendly and polite. I have a room with a balcony on the 8th floor which is very clean and modern with everything we need. The pool area is lovely and great to sit out in the evening at the bar next to it. The breakfast buffet is substantial if that's what you want. It's true that the journey to your room is a little complex ( 3 lifts over 8 floors) but I think it just adds to the quirky character of the place. Lots of local restaurants to eat at too. Went to Dubrovnik today which really is a pleasant 25-30 minute walk away, but the old town was packed with tourists from the 2 cruise shops that landed today. A walk around the city wall is a must (100 kuna each, about £21 in total). We got a taxi back which was great after all the walking but a little steep at 70 kuna or about £7, for a trip that is only just over a mile. I would definitely recommend Hotel Lapad. It hasn't disappointed!!
