“Good location, lovely hotel but only thing 5* is the price”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 July 2013

We have just returned from staying at the dubrovnik palace hotel. We enjoyed our stay but have to agree that the hotel is not 5*, although prices in their restaurants and bars are pretty steep (as you may expect for a 5*)

Good points
Free wifi which was excellent...never had a problem with connection or speed contrary to other reviews.
Clean rooms, nice powerful showers
Nice pool and access to the beach was not as difficult as I expected, even at 5 months pregnant
Great location, number 4 bus into dubrovnik starts there and you can buy tickets at the desk
Dive school located on site was excellent...my husband completed his PADI course there and loved every minute

Bad points

Rooms are quite small and dated
Breakfast was good but when busy there could be a lack of choice - refilling fruit and pastries, particularly by 10am was not always happening. They did have a cooked breakfast option but it wasn't that appealing. Not as much choice and quality as other 5 starts that we have stayed in around the world.
Drinks at the bar and food in general at the restaurants was pricey (£3.00 for a coke and £7.00 for a cocktail in plastic glass!) and not as good quality as meals we had out in lapad or dubrovnik.
Mini bar didn't get restocked regularly and we often had no new sheets on which to write what we had taken. Only on the second to last day did someone come to refill it. Not what you expect from a 5* hotel.
Our safe didn't work and despite asking at the desk, this wasn't rectified during our stay.

A wonderful Hotel! As soon as you enter a feeling of serenity washes over you and you feel in good hands. (Guaranteed to reduce the blood pressure!!) Situated just outside the Old Town the location offers you the best of both worlds.
Our room was really comfortable with great views of the pool and ocean - amazing sunsets!( We had a few pine trees also but come on, did it really spoil the amazing view?) Housekeeping was impeccable and the room spotless. Servicing of the room was very efficient twice a day. From the moment we arrived every member of staff were helpful, cheerful and polite - clearing enjoying the environment they work in! Cannot agree with a recent reviewer about the Breakfast. We staying on a B&B rate so had Breakfast each morning at various times and found each morning to be more than acceptable. We ordered double espressos instead of accepting the filter coffee and each morning they were brought to us quickly and efficiently with a smile. ( I sometimes wonder if the general public don't realise that if they are respectful and polite to service professionals they receive it back in spades - doesn't take a genius to work out does it?!) Everyone from Reception to the pool bar to the beautiful Taverna right on the ocean - the Truffle Risotto is a must - to the wonderful spot for lunch by the beach, they are all great. The Pool is lovely and yes you do have to be up early if you want a bed by the pool but we were relaxed about it - you're on holiday remember? - and found just as good areas throughout to lounge around! Days spent reading, swimming and chilling out is what it is all about here. No beach as such just an undignified launch into the sea in my case from the various launches dotted about. Getting out of the sea is a huge amount of fun and almost impossible if you are laughing too much!! 'Wave Drunk' I think it is called!!
The highlight for me was Scuba Diving with the Diving School situated within the hotel. Spectacular!! Having never done it before I was a little bit anxious and it did take a bit of getting used to the breathing apparatus but once you get the hang of it and relax it becomes an amazing experience. They take several photos of you diving which you can purchase at a very reasonable price on a disc to take home. Put it this way - I would go back like a shot and feel sorry for people who clearly have the inability to enjoy a holiday..............

Room Tip: All rooms have a lovely sea view but some are enhanced by Pine Trees. (Terrible isn't it?)

Views to die for from all the rooms across the Adriatic, we found this hotel very enjoyable. Ideally served by a bus route that terminates outside the hotel and runs every 15 mins until quite late, meant that by purchasing the Dubrovnik card we avoided taxis back and forth all the time. The rooms were fine, not quite sure if 5* standard but no complaints. We found all the staff really helpful and no problem whatsoever. The roof top bar which was visited whilst our rooms were finalised was glorious on a sunny lunchtime and not too dear considering where you were. Breakfast was very good, with omelettes/fried eggs to order and nothing again too much trouble for the waiting staff. The Sundown bar at reception level , again was fine with stunning views although this was a little more pricy than the rooftop. The "nightclub" was not open during our stay so can't comment on that although we were told it was a little on the small side. Would definitely recommend and visit again, we urged a friend who was going to Dubrovnik a few weeks after to visit the Palace purely for the rooftop bar alone, which he agreed was sensational.

Room Tip: As the reception is above the rooms due to the hotel location it can be a bit confusing but request...

Requested a room on a higher floor after reading the reviews here. Got there and were given a room on the 4th floor. View was nice though many trees blocked the view from several angles.

Asked for that higher floor again and got it on the second night. View was unrestricted.

Rooms are quite small.

Breakfast buffet was adequate but not much fresh fruit. If you leave your seat to go and get the breakfast, quite often you came back to find your chair had gone even though you had left some belongings on the table to signify it was taken. Not many tables outside with more than 4 chairs so other guests just take any nearby chairs even though clearly someone is using it.
Won't mention which country's people were culpable.

Nice pool but not much supervision and hard to relax when screaming children are running around the pool and you constantly think one of them are bound to fall and hurt themselves.

Tried out the spa. Had a back massage. Therapist was very light and felt like I was having cream rubbed into my skin rather than an actual massage. Asked her to massage harder, she said she could only do it a little bit harder. Confused! Muscles were not relaxed after. In fact my back muscles had been undisturbed by my back massage.

Honestly, the hotel itself was nothing to scream and shout about. Location was good. Bus stop right outside. Many tours started at the hotel which was good.
Would stay elsewhere if I return to Dubrovnik.

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor and keep asking until you get it as first request gets ignored.

We stayed here last month with a couple of friends and would be very happy to return.
I would agree with others that it is not of 5 star standard but non the less we found nothing much to complain about. Our rooms were on the 8th floor overlooking the sea and the pool below with spectacular sunsets. The rooms were adequate if not deluxe with everything you would need.
Breakfast on the balcony was good with a wide selection of hot and cold dishes.
We did eat in the buffet restaurant one evening, as it looked like good value, but we found it disappointing and did not return. The a la carte restaurant overlooking the sea was excellent although expensive and of limited choice. You could not eat there every night..
The service on the whole was very good with the staff being friendly and helpful. The only exception to this was the pool bar who appeared to have an attitude which was at times rude.

The location was great with easy access to the Old Town by a bus service which ran from outside the hotel every 15mins. As the bus terminated outside the hotel there was always a bus waiting. A journey of less than 15mins.

The only slight grip I had was when we ordered 4 teas on the last evening in the sunset bar and my friend, who likes his tea strong, asked for an extra teabag. When we paid the bill they insisted on charging for 5 teas to cover the cost of the extra teabag. The explanation was that they were audited daily and had to account for every teabag.
A small thing which leaves a bad taste at the end of a good holiday

Room Tip: The reception is on the 9th floor and the rooms are on the floors below the higher floor have the be...

Very disappointed by this so called 5 star hotel. Although the hotel ticks lots of boxes in terms of spa, restaurants, hairdressers etc. the actual offering is far from good. Although they advertise high speed Internet - this is not true even in the reception area. When asked they claim it is because the hotel is full, however it is very poor even at 2 a.m. The breakfast is awful and only about 20 percent of seating is outside alongside chain smokers. The rest of the seating is inside where tables are in orderly rows very much reminiscent of 70s type silver service dining. There is little fresh fruit and the bacon etc is cold. There are no pastries or boiling water for tea, just lukewarm stuff. In all they seem to do the minimum required of mass catering. Surprisingly the restaurants and bar areas are virtually empty at night. This may be because of the inflated prices or because the atmosphere doesn't really work, being mainly inside. Yes the views are spectacular, but not necessarily from the rooms. I specified an unblocked sea view, but despite their promises all we could see was pine trees. Our junior suite was a good size and the beds are comfortable, however who wants to be on a holiday in a grey painted room with green carpet and beige curtains, not to mention old orange wood wardrobe doors! Our shower door fell off on day one, which given its size was quite dangerous. The duvets are not wide enough for the king size beds, so you have to request another. Oh and don't think you'll be able to lie in and get a sun lounger because most of them are reserved by 9 and the best ones much earlier than this, which makes the whole experience less than relaxing. Although one expects all hotels to have strong and more negative elements, this hotel is very misleading and I am surprised by some of the rave reviews.

My husband chose this hotel, booked through Kuoni, for our honeymoon, as a surprise to me. The hotel had it on their computer that it is our honeymoon but no reference has been made to that fact by any member of staff or any gesture from the hotel.
The views of the Adriactic are stunning and all rooms have a balcony and sea view.
The rooms are very narrow and dated in decor. Even though it is our honeymoon we are sleeping in 2 single beds pushed together and 2 single quilts.
Yesterday our room was not serviced at all.
The bathroom floods with each shower and the towels are hard and grainy not soft, fluffy or luxurious.
Tea, coffee and kettle facilities have to be requested but each day they are not replenished and no fresh cups are brought until we phone and then wait anything from half an hour to an hour for the fresh cups and tea/coffee to be delivered.
The curtains in the room are hanging off both ends and im the middle and sunlight streams through as soon as the sun rises. This meant each night was a disturbed night.
The staff do not put themselves out for any guests. I was told by the omelette chef that was my fault that there were insufficient ingredients left to make the omelette I wanted as we came to breakfast too late. This was after standing in the omelette queue for 15 minutes and arriving at breakfast 35 minutes before the advertised breakfast closing time.
Yesterday in the Lean and Light restaurant the waiter told a table of four he was too busy to take their order. They left.
The staff at the pool bar and the so called beach restaurant are surly and smile as though they have remembered they need to smile and not because they genuinely want to be happy and helpful. All the staff prefer talking to each other than serving customers.
The access to the sea is really limited and not very inviting if you are not used to being in the sea and not used to rocky beaches. There is no sand here.
The top floor spa indoor pool and outdoor sundeck and jacuzzi are lovely. Secluded and mostly private as not many people seem to venture to the 10th floor.
The 2 indoor Jacuzzis on the 10th floor and the outside jacuzzi on the ground floor do not have full power and only work on one side of each jacuzzi.
All in all it is relaxing but in no way should be a five star hotel. The service really ready let's the hotel down and overshadows any other memory.
