This 3 star hotel offers good accommodation with rooms recently re vamped but further work is required to make it a truly enjoyable place to stay. Few rooms have balconies and most have poor or non-existent views, over a scruffy courtyard if you are lucky.
It is a lasting legacy of the old Communist regime when large hotel complexes were built (5 in this area, and a 20 minute bus ride to the old city of Dubrovnik)... with no artistic flair....concrete walkways, straggly corridors, scruffy walkways/gardens......tidy but not pretty........terraces with no views. Little public areas and those there are have little comfort or atmosphere.
Dining room , in the basement, has been modernised but is noisy and functional. Food varies but generally adequate although little variation, after 4 days it seemed to be much of the same.eg pasta or pork!Desserts rarely varied.
Evening entertainment reminded me of Costas in Spain circa 1970s.......in fact the hotel is similar to this.Band started playing as majority of people went to dinner! No concept of trying to attract them to spend more money.
Most of the staff try hard but they seem to have little direction, and do not understand the concept of adapting to the customer's demands. A general feeling pervades of this is how we do things, we cannot and will nor change or adapt to the 2010s.
Hotel is fine for a few days, exploring Dubrovnik area but not for a 2 week beach holidya.
Small pebbly beach nearby which is fairly unattractive, concrete sunbathing areas, water sports available. but lovely views.Swimming pool is good.
Whole area needs knocking down and being redeveloped by an upmarket established hotel chain who have the necessary and relevant commercialhospitality experience.
Shopping mall!! between this hotel and Argosy is appalling!

Room Tip: Do not accept one on floor 1 , ie floor between reception

Dear Guest,

We greatly appreciate any comments made by our guests and constantly strive to achieve the highest quality standards. We regret the style of our hotel and surroundings did not match your expectations, and I am especially sorry you felt we did not do our best to accommodate to our guests needs, which I can assure you, is not the case nor our intention. I am glad to inform you that for next year the whole complex will be upgraded, as two of our hotels are increasing their star categorization.
As every year we are upgrading our complex and our hotels I hope you will be our guest in the future so you will be able to see the positive changes yourself!
Kind regards,
Nenad Marić

We were given a ground floor room on arrival close to reception - it was poor in terms of quality of furniture and beds were hard / uncomfortable. Black out curtains had holes and patio windows wouldn't open. Within 5 mins we were back at reception and they didn't seem surprised to hear our request to be moved. As the hotel was full we had to wait to the next day.
The hotel is popular with coach tours for the elderly - who would stay for a couple of nights
This gave the hotel a transient feel and the first morning we were woken by such guests leaving at 6am.
We were moved to a much better room which had much better beds and balcony with a higher roof resulting in a airy pleasant feel.
The hotel is part of a 70s built building with the restaurant facing into a concrete shopping centre of closed units.very odd. That said , the food was of a good standard with chef station cooking fresh pizza risottos etc very tasty and chefs took pride in their food and were friendly and keen for you to enjoy their food. House wine is good and reasonably priced.
The restaurant was canteen like and noisy with approx 200 covers
90% of guests were in their seventies -
The hotel was very clean in public areas and bedrooms.
Pool area also clean but lacking in ambiance
Location was ok - on a peninsular- "beaches" not great.
Recommend a walk toward the beach area which leads to a coastal path with a couple of bars - try cave bar which is really unique and built into rocks. Follow the path which leads to lapad with a promenade of typical bars and parks for children and a beach with more facilities than those close to hotel.

Bus stop into old town very close to hotel and approx 15 min journey...we travelled in 5 days out of 7 as no night life in or near the hotel.

34 years ago we honeymooned at the old Plakir now re-named the Lacroma as the Plakir was badly damaged in the war . We returned to the Valamar complex which consists of 5 hotels belonging to this group . The Tirena is linked to the Argosy via a shopping mall 30% of which are empty ,the rest are taken up by bars ,gift shops , a scooter shop ,women's clothing shop and weirdly a bridal shop . The whole set-up is a bit of a concrete jungle , but a nice one .We found the Tirena very clean ,well run and good standard food above most 3 star hotels .We found the Babbin Kuk complex a little isolated on a night time ,during the day there are plenty of buses , and lots of great walks around the headland ,so take a good pair of trainers . Dubrovnik old Town is some what spoilt by the huge number of visitors ( the Cruise ship trade has a lot to answer for and is much like Venice ).The Tirena was mostly full of older folk with one or two families ,hence the lack of atmosphere on a night .Last tip there is a ladies hairdresser at the near by Neptun Hotel if you require one ( always keeps the wife happy)

Room Tip: room 215 was over the square which can have music playing on a night time

Dear guest,

It is always nice to see our guests that return to the hotel complex for the second or more times. I am grateful that you took the time to share your view of the hotel with fellow travelers and that you had time to explore our hotel surroundings as well.
I surely hope that you and your wife had a good recollection of your honeymoon in Dubrovnik and that you will choose our city and hotel again in the future for a couple of more happy anniversaries.
Until then I send you warmest regards from Dubrovnik and Tirena staff.

I stayed at the Tirena for 5 nights. I had requested a quiet room and that is exactly what I got until the neighboring hotel turned on their huge air conditioner unit in the night. The desk personnel were very friendly and helpful. They apologized for the noisy unit and said they were unaware of it. Breakfast selection was large and more than adequate. Room and public areas were very clean. Hotel is located in a lovely setting. I think I would prefer to have a hotel closer to the old town area and not have to contend with the crowds on the bus but it was, over all, a very pleasant stay.

It’s always a pleasure to read such a nice review. We are so glad that you have recognized the quality and the cleanliness of our hotel, and that you have enjoyed your holiday with us. I am sorry that the a/c unit from the neighboring hotel has disturbed your peace but I am very happy to read that our staff have dealt with it courteously.
We look forward to welcoming you back on your next visit to Dubrovnik.

I stayed one night here with my girlfriend. The hotel is situated in lapad and is about 80kn (10 euro) taxi fare from the bus station. The hotel is slightly dated and has a bizarre layout but our room (4th floor) was bright, spacious and clean with a balcony that had fantastic views out towards the sea. The bed is comfortable and the bathroom spotless The staff are friendly and helpful. The buffet dinner is excellent and great value. The pool facilities are good.I would definitely stay here again.

We recently spent four nights at the Tirena as part of a Riviera tour and our experience there was very good. The hotel isn’t too big, and is part of a chain of hotels set on a peninsula amongst lovely gardens. It has a very attractive pool and is immediately adjacent to a small shopping complex which serves all the hotels (although the Tirena is the closest). The rooms are of a good size, well furnished, immaculately clean, with comfortable beds, safe, lots of wardrobe space, and our en-suite bathroom had a bath and shower (and hairdryer). We were on half board and the breakfast and evening meal, served as a buffet, offered a very good selection of food, hot and cold, regularly restocked. The charming manager and staff made great efforts to ensure that guests enjoyed their stay. It can get rather noisy in the dining room and bar but all entertainment stops promptly at 11.00 pm, thus ensuring neighbouring rooms (like ours) are not adversely affected. Buses into Dubrovnik run from immediately outside the hotel but if you want to get a seat it is more advisable to walk the short distance through the gardens to the bus terminus outside the Hotel President. The only problem we had was with wi-fi connectivity for our Ipad which wasn’t very good. One suggestion – could information on evening entertainment at the neighbouring Valamar hotels be displayed in the foyer? Some of our fellow guests went next door to the Valamar Club to watch a Michael Jackson tribute but there didn’t seem any information about it on view. Thanks to all the staff for giving us a great time.

Dear Guest,
Thank you for staying with us and taking your time to write this review, which, I am sure, will be helpful for all our future guest that are part of the Tripadvisor community.
The best thing about my job is that part of a day when I have the chance to talk and mingle with our dear guests, especially during our welcome receptions. And to hear that my staff, and my personal effort is recognized and shared with others in such a lovey review with highest possible rates in all fields, is very rewarding and keeps us on the right track!
I am just sorry you missed our information board abut the animation program at the reception and therefore did not have the chance to enjoy Michael Jackson tribute, which is actually a great Valamar animation team production, but I am glad it did not overall diminish your stay in Tirena.

Thank you so much for your kind words about our efforts and our good service and we really hope to have you as our dear guest again!
Until the next time, have all the best regards from all of Tirena staff and myself,

The Tirena is one of a group of hotels on the Coast about 15 minutes by local bus from the Old Town. Built about 30 years ago, it has been refurbished but it has basic problems in terms of noise transmission, ill fitting patio doors and layout. It is used by a number of tour companies and by schools so expect noise and ill behaved children. We had to change rooms three times in four days due to various problems. Only the last room had a reasonable outlook.
It is a shame that we were booked in here by our travel company as the adjoining four star Valamar Lacroma is a beautiful modern hotel with great sea views, pool and landscaping and the room rates are very similar.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking your time and reviewing your stay with us.
We are sorry to hear you found your stay at our three star hotel unsatisfactory mostly due to the noise made by school group that was staying in our hotel same time as you. Although in May our hotel is mostly used by guests on tours, please note that we rarely accommodate school groups and we are sorry you were staying when we made an exception for a book out group from another hotel.
We are very glad you found our hotel Valamar Lacroma Dubrovnik to be excellent, as it is one of the newest and the best hotels in Valamar chain and whole of Dubrovnik, but please note Valamar Lacroma is a four plus star property and Tirena is a three star hotel. Due to the very different categorization, of course differences in style and quality are to be expected, so the two cannot be compared, especially not in price range.
We still hope you will choose Valamar for your next stay, and please do not hesitate to contact me if you will need any help regarding that.

Best regards,
Nenad Marić,
General manager
