Just returned from Dubrovnik staying at the Bellevue Hotel. Every morning I used to walk from the Hotel into the Old Town about 15 mins and wander around early in the morning before it got to busy. This is a beautiful City steeped in history. Lovely watching all the locals setting up their fruit, veg, ets stalls early morning.

The old town is quite small surrounded by the city wall. There is a web of small and narrow bylanes and one Main Street running through. There is old town port from where you can take a boat tour to the nearby islands or a cruise on the harbour. The old town can get very crowded in the season and wait time for know restaurants, ice cream shops, cable car can be pretty long. The narrow road leading to the old town is also very crowded and at times it takes ages to reach the city Pile Gate.

We enjoyed full day to visit the old city. Very nice city surrounded by nice and old rampart. City with many religious buildings, restaurants, small streets.

There is a reason this place is so crowded! It's a desirable place to visit! LOTS of people but well worth it!

It gets very crowded in old town, which mostly caters to tourists, though it does still have true residents there. The buildings are beautiful and there is a lot of great food and history. I recommend one of the tours to really understand what you are looking at. Be warned that when cruise ships doc, there will literally be shoulder to shoulder people here. If you are spending more than a day, plan all your Old Town activities for the morning before 10 or the afternoon after 4 or 5.
