I think other travelers and I can agree; this is a must see if you are in Croatia. My family took one of many water ferries directly to Dubrovnik’s port in front of the fort walls from Cavtat, where we were staying. This was easier for us because we didn’t rent a car since we can walk everywhere in Cavtat. Expect to be charged 30-60 kuna per person. Heading up to the fort walls by water was absolutely stunning. Once inside, there were so many places to go!! Since the old town is huge, plan to spend 2-2 1/2 hours here. Though I had my fair share of gift shops, the history was also fascinating, both because of how recent it was and how much there was to learn. There are great museums located inside the fort to learn all about these. There are also some memorials and large photos on the walls as you walk down small alleyways. If you aren’t someone with a good sense of direction, get a map. It’s easy to get lost here. Also, there are big circular structures in the main area with spouts that pour water. These are great to fill your water bottles and splash your face if it’s hot. The water is freezing so on a hot day I would recommend it. While you are exploring, you may find one of two little holes in the wall leading down a staircase. Here is a bar leading right down to the ocean. Cool off with a drink and a swim. I will warn you though, the water can be rough. Not recommended for young children or people who can’t swim well. To get in the water, you have to jump also. You can’t climb down a staircase. At one of them, there is a big walk down to a shaded area. It looks like a bunch of white umbrellas. Here, to get in the water, you will need to pass the bar down to the.lowest level where there are no chairs or tables, turn left, and go all the down the long staircase. This will lead you to the lowest entry point to the water. Lastly, and most importantly to me as a kid, there are hundreds of stray cats. They are all tame, but I wouldn’t recommend touching them. The church there feeds them and is home to most. Overall, this was an amazing experience and a must-see in Croatia.
