“Classy Place in Great Location”
Reviewed 13 September 2013

This is one of only a couple of hotels in the old walled section of beautiful Dubrovnik. Located off an alley near a city gate, the historic hotel is very nicely decorated and the staff is very warm and helpful. Orchids decorate both the lobby and the rooms, and original art is also found in those places.

You are 30 seconds away from the main street of old Dubrovnik, and only a couple of minutes from every conceivable sightseeing attraction in the downtown area. As mentioned in other reviews, the roof of the Stari Grad is worth the climb. It provides some seating areas with a spectacular view of the city. There is no bar service, but you can take your own beverages or ones from the hotel mini bar to the roof.

Drawbacks: no elevator, no restaurant (though you get a voucher for a breakfast at a pretty good local eatery near the hotel) and no taxi access to the property. The taxi or bus will drop you near the city gate and you take your luggage a couple of blocks to the hotel.

Overall, staying at the Stari Grad was a great experience. A bit pricey, but you stay at a classy historic place right in the heart of the city.

This lovely boutique hotel is perfectly located in the old town but you have to be prepared to drag your bags from the city gates and up the stairs. We had a fabulous stay and the rooftop terrace is a terrific place to have a drink as the sun sets, with panoramic views of the city,. Our friends stayed outside the walls and were very envious of our hotel choice.

My husband and I stayed here for 4 nights in August. Overall we would recommend this hotel. It has recently been renovated to a very high standard, with beautifully designed bedrooms and bathrooms. We stayed on the fourth floor in Room 402, which had two windows looking out over the roof tops of the old town. There are lots of steps to climb but this is the norm for Dubrovnik and we didn't mind. The roof top terrace is wonderful. We went up there several times and there was no one else there! The hotel's real plus point is its central location. It was very hot when we were there and it was great to escape to the air con when the crowds and heat were too much!

The breakfast at Cafe Festival around the corner was fine. There were about 5 choices.

Dubrovnik is a great city and we did all the usual touristy things including climbing the walls and taking the cable car to the top of Mount Srd. We also hired a car one day and drove to Montenegro, which was also beautiful. If you want to hire a car I would recommend booking one in advance as they found it difficult to find an available car for us.

We ate in many restaurants but the best were Debravka (just outside the city walls at Pile Gate), Mea Culpa and Taj Mahal.

My wife and I stayed here during our stay in Dubrovnik for our Honeymoon. On the whole I would say this was an enjoyable stay, with a great location in the heart of the city. We appreciated the fact that we were literally 20 steps away from the Stradun, and we enjoyed the view from the rooftop terrace (even though it appeared to be under renovation while we were there, so we were not able to eat there).

We were disappointed by a maintenance issue during our stay (pipe under the sink came unhooked three times one evening while we were staying there (and to fix the situation short term I would hook it back up until a permanent fix could be done)). However, the staff addressed the issue as soon as possible (I understand it can be hard for an 8 room hotel to have a plumber on call after business hours), and the issue was fixed for good the next day.

Also, we stayed on the top floor (and were happy with this as we had a great view for our Honeymoon), and did not mind the stairs. The Old Town is a UNESCO heritage site. They cannot change it to put in elevators. If that is an issue, then don't stay here. But if you are physically able, I would certainly stay here due to the location, views, and staff

This recently renovated boutique hotel in the center of old Dubrovnik (hence the name “Stari Grad”) has striking modern design and great furniture. Unfortunately, the hotel was not completed when we were there: the coffee bar was not open, we could not eat breakfast in the hotel (but they did provide us the vouchers to go to a local café), and there was no furniture on the rooftop deck (but I must add the view from the deck was truly amazing). Our rooms were on the 4th floor and this hotel did not have an elevator so be ready to climb (I would not recommend this hotel to senior citizens or those who have trouble walking). The rooms were a nice size with the same chic design (we had one room with twin beds that were very small but still comfortable). Additionally, the bathrooms were large and had great rain showers. This hotel was good and I would recommend it to fit people who are not planning on going until it is completed.

Booked this hotel primarily due to being in the city walls of Old Town. However, when you get there you realize that is not so important . Other hotels such as the Hilton are right down the street( the gates are small arches you walk through- not a big deal to stay right outside the old town area). The phones in the rooms do not work. I was there all week and nothing was done for this issue, so I guess they no longer offer phone service to guests? There are no lifts/elevators as others have mentioned. To go to a 4th floor room you have to go up 8 flights of stairs, 3rd floor room six flights. They have no staff to carry your luggage up either. I am not clear about this terrace people discuss. Breakfast is not served on the terrace. Instead they give you a voucher to go next door to a cafe. The voucher is good for a tiny breakfast and they only give you coffee or tea but not both? The bathroom had an extremely "foul odor" and I had to keep the door closed for most of my stay. Finally, in the middle of my stay I came back to my room and noticed the carpeting was drenched. Two pairs of my socks got soaked. The lady who was working at the reception area came up to the room to look and she had no idea but presumed the maid must have spilled the water bucket? However, she said she couldn't reach the maid on her cellphone. The carpeting stayed wet for a couple of days and nobody from the hotel ever followed up. Reading a review from 2007 on this site further makes me suspicous they may have leak issues etc. I ultimately got a cold towards the end of my stay, and felt much better a day after leaving here. The odors, dampness- don't think this is very healthy. Also, the AC is a room air conditioner and not very efficient in addition to being noisy. I went inside the Hilton and that is a top notch looking hotel that I would highly recommend looking at if you get a good price. The staff at the hotel was friendly, but that is about the only positive thing I can say in addition to being right in the center of Old Town, which is worth something, but not as much as they try to promote.

Dear Sir,

We deeply regret your missfortunes during your stay in Dubrovnik Old Town. This is truly a unique city and we strive to make all our guests as comfortable as possible at Hotel Stari Grad. The property has recently been renovated to the highest standars of contemporary luxury design with all modern amenities included, without loosing its old charm and preserving original hundreds year old stone stairs, hallway arches and other architectural features. It is truly a unique property on the Croatian coast, which sits within a four hundred year old mantion under UNESCO protection and under the Citys patronage. Being a cultural monument, it therefore prevents any possibility of elevator installation and while we do understand that it can be a challenge walking up to rooms located on third or fourth floor, most of our guests and cultural travelers to such destinations as Dubrovnik understand the position we are in and admire the old charm. Help with luggage is offered to all our guests and at all times without any acception and being that we have all female stuff it is greatly appreciated by all our guests.

We appologise that you haven't been able to enjoy a meal on our terrace and we are currenty working on full usage of it. In the mean time all our guests can enjoy the terrace and order a beverage. Our biggest wish now is that you would have pointed at least one of the issues to us during your stay, so that we could have arranged a lovely candle lit evening for you on our terrace with a glass of wine on the house.

We can't be more regretefull about the smell you have noticed from the bathroom, but unfortunately being inside the Old Town and right by the Adriatic sea can have its downturns when the tide rises all drains and pipes produce a mild smell. We have never had any complaints as this mild smell can be noticed around the town (same as in Venice during the summer month of July), but are now looking into technical solutions to become the only accommodation in Dubrovnik Old Town that is not affected by this natural accurance.

We once again appologize that you have not been able to use your in-room phone for outgoing calls. However, the phone on reception was offered and was available 24 hours should you have stressed to us that you urgently need to make an outgoing call. Furthermore, while we were having difficulties with the phones, we offered free calls to our guests in relation to bookings of restaurants, car rentals, excursions, or any other calls within Croatia.

In addition, we would like to point out that since the incident when our housekeeper spilled water in your room, we did everything to try to dry it out and since have replaced our housekeeper as she didn't report the issue immediately to try and solve it before you returned to your room.

Regarding the air-conditioning in the room, we wish that you would have brought it to our attention during your stay. Each room has intelligent room control panel, which also regulates the temperature and speed of the air-condition. Putting it on the minimum temperature and mimimum speed satisfies most sensitive sleepers.

We would lastly like to add that our reception is available 24 hours a day and goes to maximum lenghts to satisfy all our guests at all times without any exceptions and we couldn't stress out more how regretfull we are that we were not aware of the issues you have experienced during your stay. We wish that this did not spoil your overall experience of your stay in Dubrovnik and that we would be glad to welcome you again as our guest!

With warm personall regards,

Anna Slabovska

As per the review title really. We stayed in the newly refurbished room on top floor (402 no stairs please remember) and were not disappointed in any way.

Our stay was incredible! There was a little refurbishment in the lobby but that did not impact on our stay whatsoever.

Roof top terrace is a 'proper' 360 degree roof top view from within the old city... not in any way a minor glimpse that others would pass of as the real McCoy.
