“Fab hotel, just not quite 5*”
Reviewed 6 September 2012

Had a week in a deluxe room on the 11th floor and loved it. But more attention to detail needed to make this a really special hotel.

Floors 11 and 12 are immediately above the lobby floor, buffet restaurant is on floor 10 and all the other rooms are below that (all with balconies) with the pool area right at the bottom, so the top floors prob have the best view - and it's gorgeous.

Our room shared a ginormous terrace with the other deluxe rooms. Was a real suntrap for most of the day and dead quiet. Nice to be away from the noise of the pool area. Room v generous size - was happy to lounge around there most of the day, bathroom area is open plan, but we didn't have a problem with this. Comp fruit and wine was in room when we arrived.

Great location. Really easy to wander into old town once the heat of the day had eased. Also great local restaurant (Magellan) very near to hotel and half the price of the hotel dinner buffet (which was 200 kuna pp). Would also recommend Sesame on the road into the old town.

But... overall service and maintenance falls short: shower in room didn't drain well so was like paddling pool; shower fitting needed fixing; light bulbs need replacing; housekeeping erratic - we never knew how many towels we'd end up with and one day they didn't come at all; table settings at breakfast often missing cutlery etc; three PCs in lobby for internet but one didn't work... took over 20 mins to check out because of a problem with our invoice... and so on.

We didn't encounter any problems with unhelpful/rude staff that others have reported (the opposite in fact), but in general I would say that for such a swanky looking hotel the management should be much slicker. Instead it felt a bit sloppy and, well, unprofessional. A shame really because all points mentioned above are small details but overall leave a bad impression. I wanted to give Rixos 5/5 but it's just not quite up to scratch.

One final comment. Apparently there are very few bits of the Croatian coast that are truely 'private' so anyone is entitled to come and make use of the 'beach' at the hotel. It never got really packed with locals when we were there (surprising considering how hot it was) and I did see hotel staff having a word with some kids when they got too rowdy. So it never bothered us that locals were using the pool area to access the sea. I had more of a problem with other guests 'booking' loungers before breakfast with their towels, and the annoying europop from the beach bar!

The hotel itself is beautiful, rooms very spacious, modern and clean and without a doubt would be 5* if it were not for appalling service in the restaurant, the mis-management of the All Inclusive option and the lack of supervisory staff.

There was no Maitre D in the restaurant, meaning that we were never shown to our table. Tables were not laid out correctly, i.e. spoons missing from some, condiments from others etc. We had to actively seek out someone to bring us drinks, and on one occasion I had to go and find milk myself as the waitress refused (twice) to get it for me. Only 1 member of staff made any effort whatsoever to communicate with us in the 7 nights we stayed at the hotel.

The pool area is lovely and well kept, and the waitress polite and efficient, however we and other guests did not appreciate the loud music repeated every hour (some of which had pornographic lyrics) we had our inquisitive 7 year old asking us what they meant, which I'm afraid is unacceptable. We assume this was because there was never a supervisor around.

In the Poolside restaurant, staff are unaware what is and is not included in the All Inclusive package. We ended up taking this up with our Rep who assured us that everything was included. We were then charged on check out for ice cream and milk shakes (which incidentally other guests were not) therefore we would request that this money be refunded.

In addition, having travelled extensively in Europe and the Carribean, we have never come across an all inclusive that actually charges you for mini-bar products. What is the reason for this? We paid 230 kuna for 2 beers, 2 waters and 2 minute jars of apple juice, which we feel is at best excessive and at worse a down right rip-off.

Were they to sort out the appalling level of service and accounting (we were charged from the min-bar for a number of items we had not had) then we wouldn't hesitate to return to the beautiful hotel, however, these issues had an extremely negative effect on our holiday, and having paid in excess of £3000 for a 7 night stay we will not be returning (at least not on the all inclusive basis).

We had a really lovely day at this hotel, swimming and jumping off the cliff into the water. We also *thought* the staff was helpful. When I told Maris at guest relations that we planned to take the Thursday ferry to Hvar, she quickly talked me out of it saying that it would take too long (8 hours) and that we should instead take a bus to Drvenik and then a ferry to Sucaraj and then a "35 minute" bus ride to Hvar Island. She said, in total, it would take less than 3.5 hours so it was a much better option. I had her then talk to my friend who, like me, had been set on taking the ferry. She told him the same thing and even printed up the schedule of which ferries/buses to take. When we arrived in Hvar, we were told that the buses did not run on Thursdays (only M, W, F) and that we would have to take a 1000 kuna (almost $200) taxi to Hvar Island and it would take over an hour. After asking around, it turned out that this was our only option unless we wanted to spend the night. We took the taxi to the island and arrived almost 7 hours after we left Dubronik and spending almost $300 (for two people) on travel (far more expensive than the ferry). It was really unfortunate and for this, I cannot provide the hotel with a good review.

The high points--Beautiful property, 15 minute walk to the Old Town, lovely rooms

The low points--the room smelled strongly of cigarette smoke, the drinks at the bar are overpriced and the worst I have ever had (do not order the pina colada or the classic martini), the staff is misinformed.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the top floor, but one that does not smell like smoke.

If you are staying here when it is full moon, you probably can not think of a better place to be. We were told that originally this hotel was built for Yugoslavian elite and ruling class to stay when they visit Dubrovnik. Can understand why. During our stay, we experienced a couple of issues which were resolved by hotel mgmt immediately so overall we were quite satisfied. Rooms are spacious and have great views. Food and drink prices are a bit on the upper side.

Room Tip: 9th floor has some noise problems because of restaurant on the 10th floor bit we were told that they...

To whom it may belong,

Ijust would like to inform you that our stay was just great to receive the hospitality of all the staff and management. Especially the service and the quality of all the team members of the executive chief. It is a pitty, that the area on the 9th floor is very smelly and there shoul be done something against it. Anyway - if I will choose another stay in Dubrovnik, I will book again the "Rixos Libertas".

All the best - Manfred

I don't stay in hotels like this very often, and stayed in this one out of complete desperation (our apartment cancelled on us at the last minute and it was the only place in Dubrovonik with rooms), but had an amazing stay.

It's definitely pricey and I don't know how it stacks up against comparable 5-star hotels (as I never stay in them), but there was nothing to complain about at all--great experience.

Some highlights: GORGEOUS views. Amazing breakfast with a ton of food, you can eat overlooking the sea. Nice fellow guests, nice (but expensive) bar, beautiful rooms with balconies. A bit far from the center, but peaceful.
