“Excellent property and wonderful staff!”
Reviewed 29 June 2012

My husband and I recently stayed 3 nights at the Hotel Berkely as our last stop on our trip through Croatia.

We couldn't have been more pleased with the hotel and the staff. I was slightly nervous about what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised when we arrived. We were upgraded to a larger room and had a lovely one bedroom apartment. The hotel seems brand new and very well maintained. The room was very clean and the bed was extremely comfortable. We enjoyed sitting out on our balcony as well. We had a little trouble getting the TV to work though- sounds funny, but seriously it was really hard to operate.

The staff is truly excellent. The breakfast included with the room is a small buffet spread and then with additional coffee and breakfast items that can be ordered off the menu. The staff was knowledgeable and provided great guidance in terms of exploring Dubrovnik. We locked ourselves out of the safe and they called the manager to come open it at 5 am as we were departing. They could not have been more helpful during our stay!!

The hotel is located about 1 block from the bus station which will take you right downtown to the main tourist section of Dubrovnik. We walked a couple of times and it took us about 45 minutes. By bus, it's only about 15 minutes and the bus is very affordable. There are restaurants in the area of the hotel and beaches, so we were please with the location.

We spent a week at the Berkeley at the start of June and from the start (being met at the airport with our complimentary transfer) the team were the most welcoming, friendly and helpful I've ever experienced. The hotel itself is lovely with clean, spacious rooms. We booked a studio room with a sea view which not only had an amazing view across the harbour but also had the added benefit of a small kitchen area and fridge - essential if the weather is as hot as it was when we were there! The hotel is situated in a quiet, safe residential area close to the harbour and is only a few minutes' walk away from the main market, a supermarket and the frequent buses which run to the Old City (although the walk to the Old City only takes around 30 minutes and offers some stunning views). We appreciated the team's recommendations for places to eat and tips for avoiding the crowds (quieter beaches, entering the City Walls from the gate furthest away from where the tour buses drop etc) and they also seemed very interested in our experiences of Dubrovnik and whether there were places we'd recommend to people (Lady Pi Pi, despite the slightly odd name, for example!). We were genuinely sad to leave at the end of the week as the atmosphere at the Berkeley is such a happy and welcoming one. Hopefully we'll be back before long possibly to act on the advice that Dubrovnik out of season is something well worth experiencing! Thank you again to all at the Berkeley who made the trip so fantastic.

Room Tip: Go for a studio or apartment with a sea view if you can.

We stayed for a 50th birthday with family ( June 3rd to 8th ) booked via Easyjet on the tripadvisor comments. WE were NOT dissapointed. Great hotel to stay in and explore the local area and food. The pool was a welcome sight when we returned from the old town. Being the General Manager of a 40 bedroom hotel I can say that the team ( not staff ) were fantastic , thats what you get for booking a small family run hotel not a big business with "staff" who don't care. The breakfast lady ( the gruff one) sorry are you all a picture of happyness in the morning I think not !!. She was helpful enquiring and provided local knowledge of things to do and places to go and was great with the younger ones , after breakfast guess what no going home she is off to clean rooms ( very hard work I can tell you ). The hotel is great for a break or holiday. Book tickets for the bus and link in with your visit to the old town as you get 10 trips on the bus so you can go back in the evening and see the town in the different light. I can say at no time did we feel that we were unsafe as per previous comments. WE would defo go back again and cannot thank the team enough for making the 50th memorable. Take up the offer of the hotel driver as it is a great way to arrive and is not that expensive , he is a realy nice helpful guy. We stayed in rooms 33 and 35 .

Room Tip: Take a studio or front facing room or those on the left hand side as you look at the hotel

The hotel was very pleasant - clean, comfortable and small, which made it much more personal. As a first time visitor to Dubrovnik (and Croatia) the staff at the Berkeley Hotel made the experience much more enjoyable, giving us advice and recommendations on what to see and do, and where to eat, whilst on holiday. The woman who served breakfast (unfortunately I didn't find out her name) was a delight, sharing her own experiences and advising us, and generally bringing a smile to the breakfast table! The other staff were also fantastic.

The pool was lovely and warm, and usually quite quiet. It's child-friendly as it is a small pool area and the pool isn't very deep. It also has a lovely view over the bay. Towels to use by the pool are provided in a basket by the pool bar (an honesty bar, stocked with cold soft drinks and beer, and crisps).

It's also well situated, very close to the main bus station, meaning you can easily get buses into the old town (the 1A, 1B, 1C or 3 - tickets can be purchased at reception), to Lapad, where there are various beaches (number 6 bus) or to Cavtat (10, I think) which is well worth a visit, a lovely little town with quieter beaches, nice restaurants and with much less traffic than Dubrovnik.

The only slight let down from my point of view was that the breakfast wasn't very varied. I ordered a cooked breakfast of fried eggs with bacon and mushrooms one morning, but it was too greasy for me, and the alternatives aren't very exciting - a small selection of fruit, cereal, bread rolls, yoghurt. It would've been nice to have a pastry or cake, or some more fresh, local fruit. Nonetheless the coffee was good and made to order, and the food was plentiful, just not outstanding.

Overall, a pleasant stay at the Berkeley made fantastic by the wonderful staff.

Room Tip: Get a sea view room - spectacular sunsets and views over the bay.

Just checked out after three nights here. Staff is great - very knowledgable and helpful. Rooms are sparkling clean and comfortable. Quiet location. Ask for a "view" room. Convenient to bus to Old Town (about a 10-minute ride). Nice pool area with honor bar. Excellent package that inclides round-trip airport transfers, breakfast (a bit blah but okay to start the day with excellent cappucino), city bus card, etc. Do not miss Restaurant Amfora a few blocks away.

Room Tip: Room 43 was very nice!

Had a nice stay in this hotel.. The rooms are clean and the bathroom is spacious and modern.. The aircondintioning was excellent a big plus condsidering the exceptionally hot weather there at the moment.. The receptionists were really helpful in particular Maria who always had a lovely smile to welcome you and gave great tips bt bus tickets etc.. She made the hotel stay!! Breakfast was nice with good variety of food but i have to stay the lady who works there as one other travellor described her as been a bit gruff.. It would have bn nice to have a nice smile and a welcome.. Overall would stay here again if i was in Dubrovnik.. however if you are less mobile i would think again as there is steep hill to go up and down to catch the bus or alternatively there are the killer steps as an alternative if you want a short cut.. One other thing it would be handy if there was either a small table out on the balcony i know its small but even a fold away one would be nice so you could sit and have a glass of wine.. Other tip would ask to be located in the front of the hotel either on 3rd/4th floor..

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the 3rd of 4th floor.. Get daily bus tickets which are cheaper if you are going i...

We booked this Hotel because of the reviews...and were certainly not disappointed. For those who say, it is out of town, they are correct, but so are ALL the Hotels, unless you want to pay triple the price. However, there is a bus stop at the front of the Hotel, so it is simple, use the bus, but remember to get off at the Cable car. We found the staff to be excellent, very attentive, polite and helpful. This is a little gem of a find. We would say book the 4th floor if you can at the front for the views of the marina if you can, which we where lucky enough to get. For a 3 star Hotel, you get 5 star service, friendliness and cleanliness.

Room Tip: Upgrade and book the 4th floor at the front....
