“Great Modern Apartment Hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 November 2008

My mum and I went on a short break to Dubrovnik and stayed here in a seaview appartment and really enjoyed our stay.

The hotel itself is clean and bright and the staff all very friendly and helpful. The room was quite spacious with a small kitchen, hob and fridge and there is a supermarket by the bus terminal. The bathroom was spacious with a great power shower. The sheltered balcony overlooked the harbour with a good view. Breakfast included a small cooked menu, cooked to order as well as a buffet, although it was a a little early 7-9.30am.

We were picked up from the airport by the hotel which made life really easy and it was reasonably priced, cheaper than a taxi. The hotel is quite close to the main airport bus terminal and easily walkable from there. (The Berkelely is quite close to the Hotel Petka if you are looking for it on a map.)

It is very easy & quick to get into the old town on the regular 1A, 1B bus which terminate at the Pile gate. We bought tickets at reception at a slight discount and had no problems with the short walk from the bus stop to the hotel. Being November not everything was open in the old town but we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the hotel and in Dubrovnik as a whole and would definitely go back to the hotel Berkeley.

My girlfriend and I returned yesterday from a great 5 night stay at the Berkeley.

It's a small hotel located in Gruz Harbour, about 3km from the Old Town, and in our opinion an ideal location for visiting Dubrovnik. The surrounding area is very picturesque for walking, and has some great restaurants too. It's also where a lot of the cruise ships dock, and many boat trips to surrounding islands leave from Gruz. There is a very regular bus service into the old town running essentially all day and night, including Sundays (around £1.25 GBP for a single ticket). Other reviewers have mentioned a "scary walk through alleyway" from the bus stop to the hotel, but this wasn't our experience. There are at least two well-lit pathways to walk up from the bus stop to the hotel (one street back from the main road), and we probably passed about three people on the path over the whole week. The hotel is also located right next door to the local police station. And if you prefer there's a slightly longer walk that avoids the pathways.

To the hotel itself - we had a sea view studio on the third floor; look at our photos to see what the room was like - essentially very comfortable with all modcons, including a kitchen and dining area.

Check-in was quick and hassle-free. The room was quiet and had ample space for our luggage. Reception were very responsive and friendly; on one evening our kettle broke and when they couldn't immediately find a spare they brought us a pot of tea and coffee (complementary) rather than us going without.

Breakfast was of a high standard and included a cooked option; being a small hotel you also quickly got to the stage of them bringing out your "usual" without having to go through it all. Check-out was uneventful too at the end of our stay.

Complaints: none really. They didn't replace the tea/coffee every day which did irk me a little, but to be honest I didn't go to Croatia to drink coffee in my hotel so it didn't interfere much with the holiday.

In summary this was a great hotel, offering great value in a good location. I'd go back to this hotel if visiting Dubrovnik again for business or pleasure.

As a travel planner, I have stayed in many different hotels - The Berkely Hotel was impressive.
We stayed at the Berkeley for 4 nights and loved everything about it. We had never been to Croatia and were unsure what to expect. We were immediately impressed with the transfer service provided by the hotel. The driver was waiting for us at the airport, helped us with the luggage and immediately showed us to the large clean van.
The Hotel is new and fresh. We were greeted by Katarina who was very helpful and friendly. We were amazed when we entered the room. It was truly a beautiful apartment with a great balcony and view.
The staff was very helpful assisting us with directions and recommendations. The breakfast was another nice surprise. We had a beautiful buffet table to choose from and were asked if we wanted a cooked meal as well. Mariana in the restaurant has a great sense of humor.
I will be returning to Croatia and The Berkeley

Wonderful 6 nights, modern, very spacious and clean, everything we could have wanted for our honeymoon. The little kitchen was alaos brilliant. Staff were friendly and service was excellent. Good breakfast! Room had wonderful balcony view of Gruz harbour and easy to get into town (30 min walk or 10 min on bus). Good location for ferrys and boat trips (5 min walk).

We just came back from magical Dubrovnik and spent 2 nights at the Berkeley Hotel. Wonderful friendly and helpful staff, great new hotel with clean modern rooms, flat panel TV's, small kitchenette (2 hot plate stove, sink, dishes and small under-counter fridge) and comfy beds. We had a delicious breakfast with our choice of made to order eggs as well as fresh breads, yogurt, juices, fruit, and delicious capuccinos/coffee.
Bonus was the underground parking with the hotel.....while tight spaces for North American standards, my husband was able to easily park our 9 passenger van in one of the spaces...complimentary parking and they were kind enough to let us park for an additional 5 hours after we checked out. Walk 10 minutes to the bus stop (down hill) and take the #1 A or #1B bus into old Dubrovnik (takes about 10 minutes by bus)....easy and so convenient as the buses run every 5-15 minutes daily! We even walked into town one day.....30 minute brisk walk. We stayed with 2 other couples and we all agreed that it was a great value, great location and we would stay there again.

After struggling to find any accommodation in Dubrovnik that wasn't either very expensive or a room in somebody's house, we came across the Berkeley Hotel.

It is a small, modern hotel with large rooms and comfy beds. We had what is classified as a 'side sea view' but you had a great view over the side of the harbour where the smaller cruise ships dock. There were great sunsets over the harbour.

The room was large with lots of cupboard space, a very useful kitchenette, a safe, TV, air-con and a lovely modern bathroom (including a basic hairdryer). The staff were very friendly and helpful and the breakfast was great. All the usual cereals & yoghurts on the table plus you could request hot food cooked to order. The only complaint would be that the 09.30 finish time for the breakfast seating was a bit early, we tunred up each day at 09.25 with that 'just got out of bed' look!

The only small downside was the location of the hotel. We tried to walk into town the first day and got very lost! We soon learnt the bus system (1a & 1b) which was very easy and frequent. They run til after 1am so it's easy and cheap to get back after a night out. They take about 15 mins into town (terminating at the Pile Gate) and about 5 mins to get back! This is because hordes of people get on along the route and with all the pushing & shoving & buying of tickets, it is a rather slow (but entertaining) process. If you buy the ticket on the bus it is 10kuna for a 1 hour ticket, or 8 kuna from the kiosk, or you can buy at 24 hour ticket from the kiosk (or sometimes they have them at reception) costing 25kunas and it lasts for 24 hours from the first time you stamp it on the bus.

As for the 'safety concern' review, this is ridiculous. Yes, the hotel is up a quiet back road in Gruz Harbour and the road is a bit blind to cross, but it is no way dangerous or threatening. We rarely saw anyone around to feel threatened by, and we found the whole of Dubrovnik to feel very safe and friendly. We are 2 female travellers who live in London and know the fears of walking alone late at night, and this was a world away from that!

  • Liked — Modern facilities & friendly staff
  • Disliked — Location - but it's not bad, just the only thing not great!

When we booked this hotel in Jan 08, there were only 2 reviews on trip advisor and therefore it hadn't got a rating. Before leaving for our holiday in June, I checked trip and was delighted to learn that more reviews were placed and it was rated no 3!

It certainly lived up to it's rating. Clean, modern hotel with friendly staff and you had the best of both worlds - self catering facilities with a cooked breakfast each morning! Breakfast was served 7 - 9.30am and it was cooked to order so it wasn't lying around for several hours being kept luke warm. Good sized fridge with ice compartment. Huge apartment with air conditioning throughout (included in price) and ample storage. My only comment is that the wardrobes could have done with a few more hangers and I had intended to write this on the comments sheet before I left but I just ran out of time.

I did have some concerns about the location, however, unless you are prepared to pay Hilton prices, all hotels are based outside of the town centre and require a bus. The buses were very regular and cheap and we were actually glad we weren't right in the town centre as it did get quite busy during the daytime. A few days when we just wanted to lie on the beach, we walked to the Lapad beach which took 25mins. Great exercise and you passed a shopping centre on the way (much to my husband's dismay!). This walk also helped us discover some lovely restaurants just round the other side of the Gruz harbour. (I can't recall the name - one was in a walled courtyard and although you didn't have much of a view, the food and service was excellent and reasonably priced - I think it was run by same management as the popular Domino restaurant in the town).

All other reviewers have covered everything else so I'll just add a few more pointers.

Cavtat - get the local bus - amazing views on the bus journey.
Airport - Atlas run a shuttle bus after most major airline flight arrivals - pay on the bus 35k pp single. Get bus back to airport from the long distance bus station.
Local ferry - get ticket at the Jardivinia office on the main road near where you the get the bus in to town. I think we paid 36k pp return to go to Lopud!
