“Hostel Pipistrelo - Good Hostel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 September 2013

We stayed in this hostel for a couple of nights, 3 girls in a 4 bed dorm with ensuite shower and toilet.
Pleasantly surprised with this hostel after reading some of the reviews!
The hostel is a 10 minute walk from the bus station, set near the water. The staff are very welcoming and friendly.
Room was okay! Not 5* gleaming etc, but you are staying in a hostel remember that. Comfy beds, decent shower and toilet area, also bonus that there is another toilet in reception!
Good kitchen/dining area.

Also amazing location in terms of eating out, shopping, doing general touristy things. So so so many options for food etc, beautiful cobbled streets and location!

Overall would recommend this hostel for backpackers looking for somewhere cheap to stay.

I stayed here for a couple of nights at the end of my holiday in Croatia and it compared unfavourably to other places I stayed during my trip.
The room I stayed in was the music themed one, decorated with vintage album covers but the beds and floor was made from vast amounts of chipboard which looked a bit cheap.

There was no air conditioning in the room which made it unbearable at night. The hostel was very central for the old town but very neat the docks of Pula which means lots of clanking from a very early hour.

Also my glasses went missing in the room and the staff didn't appear that bothered about it when I asked them about it when I left. I also emailed when I returned and got no reply.

They have a bit of work to do to bring Pipistrelo up to standard.

For those who do not want to read the full review here is a summary of what made this hostel the worst traveling experience of my life here are the 'low points' of our stay:

* they provided with wrong keys- had to contact police to get us into hostel at 1am.

* BED BUGS! Our room was full of blood sucking parasites.

* room swapping- after we reported the bed bugs we were moved room twice as it appeared they were blaming us for the parasites!!

* wrong keys again- we were provided with the wrong keys to our new room.

* removal of kitchen- no warning! One minute the kitchen was there and we bought our dinner and contents for breakfast to discover the entire kitchen had been removed and not replaced.

* disgusting shower room- almost more mould than tiles in the horrible small shower room in the hostel.

Where do I start...? It has been a week since we left this hostel. We noticed it had great reviews and as a group of four looking for a well earned, but budget, one week break we thought we would reward ourselves with this, somewhat pricey, hostel!

To be clear and fair, I have travelled and stayed in a huge amount of hostels throughout Europe and a tiny bit of Africa so this review comes from someone who knows a few things about hostels! I have stayed in hostels where I had to pay about €4,00 for one night and I was very content with my stay. In Hostel Pipistrelo, I was paying €17,00 per person, I was traveling with my partner so a total of €34,00 per night! Enough for a nice hotel, sure, but we love hostels and the social aspect of it all.

The social aspect... There is a what seems to be a common room but this room is closed off at any time between 7pm and 9pm! Unaware of the odd closing time we stored beer in this area on our first night so we could meet fellow travelers but we were unable to access our own supply. This was the least of our worries as the hostel provided us with only two sets of keys between a group of four. One set of keys did not have a key to open the front door, the other had an incorrect key for opening the front door. We waited outside the hostel, pushing buzzers, knocking the door until we noticed policemen and they contacted the hostel owners. The hostel staff, to their credit, appeared quite quickly and were rather apologetic. Our first mishap was over.

Our second HUGE problem was the insect bites that were appearing on our bodies and faces each morning. We spent a lot of time at beaches so we thought perhaps it was mosquitoes and we gave the hostel the benefit of the doubt until one night at 4am. One of my travel companions discovered some insects on his bed. We switched on the lights to discover large amounts of bed bugs crawling over our beds and the walls. It goes with out saying that we packed our things and had to wait until the staff return to work at 8am. They were shocked when we showed them the insects and our wounds. They quickly called pest control and promised to move us to a different room, they did however do us the disservice of questioning if we were responsible for these insects. This was very insulting, we had all came from my house which is very, very clean. These bed bugs were adult sized and there were probably over fifty of them... How could we travel with fifty adult bed bugs!? After they moved us to a rather nice looking room decorated with record sleeves and a large guitar we thought we could rest after a rather disgusting night. Wrong.

The pest control suggested that we might have bed bugs in our clothing, our bags and God knows where else...! His wise words were that a room full of wood, like the one we were moved to, would be great conditions for the parasites! We were moved to another room, after a two hour wait in the... Erhem... 'Common room'. Our new room had tiles and a small, mouldy shower room that had black mould in the corners and on a putrid fish shaped shower mat. We were given the wrong keys to the front door and there was a sorry lack of apologies, hints of compensation or gestures of good will.

The final straw, as if all the rest wasn't bad enough, was the kitchen incident. Like many people who stay in hostels, we were on a budget and we ate our breakfast using the limited, not so clean kitchen that the hostel provided. We made a decision to make some pasta dishes using the hostel kitchen (which we used for breakfast that morning) we went to the supermarket and bought some nice ingredients so we can enjoy a nice meal. When we returning to the hostel there was no kitchen! It had been removed and replaced by a table. This enfuriated us but furthermore the attitude of the hostel staff did not help the situation. The receptionist was sitting chatting away to a friend when we had to interrupt to question about the kitchen, they smirked and laughed when we asked why there wasn't any warning or what should we do with our food. The attitude of that young lady was all wrong and we were left very upset. They made a startling excuse that it all happened within hours and they did not know about it... An entire kitchen removed and replaced with no notice and within hours, I found it all a bit hard to believe.

To summarise, our stay was a real disaster and I would strongly recommend you look at the other hostels carefully before even considering this hostel. They spend far too much time trying to make the place look hip, cool and trendy without considering the essentials that make a hostel a great place to stay. Credit should go to the tall blonde member of hostel staff who was ashamed of the way our stay was treated and she was frequently apologetic about the shambles of the entire thing, she even apologised for her colleagues behaviour which says a lot!

The worst hostel experience of my life.

Room Tip: For a good room... Pick another hostel.

We stayed for one week and used the hostel more as a cheap hotel-eating out and not using communal facilities. It was good for these purposes but for actual backpackers there is not much in the way of communal space.
The location is great and the prices very reasonable. Our room ("Movie Room") was a good size private en suite with a massive TV, air con and a nice bathroom although we had some problems with a broken toilet and sink which took some time to get fixed-you have to ask the right person I think. Nika on the front desk is brilliant.
We didn't notice any noise from the shipping yard and were not disturbed by other guests too much even late at night.
The hostel also has it's own hire car with great rates and a shuttle service to the airport. I would recommend it to price conscientious visitors and would stay again if we ever went back.

Hello,
We stayed one week in the hostel. The mission from the hostel is 'it is not about sleeping, but about dreaming'. I can't agree. We had a room at the third floor. On the site you see that every room has a different theme. Our was plastic candeleer. It was dull, but ok. The room had a good bed and a self made closet. The view was the harbor. I recommend earplugs. Not only for the noise from the harbor, but also for the air-conditioning. It was a good thing that we could cool down in the room. Down stairs you have a common room. That is TERRIBLE! There is no dreaming about it! If they put some work to it, you can make it nice ... but now it was terrible! Then they have something they call a kitchen! That is just one big mess! You can't use it in a proper way and it is continuous dirty. The staff is friendly. Every day you can ask for a new towel, so that was good. The bathroom... they don't clean it except when you ask it. So .. conclusion: they can do better. It's good for one night ... for one week: stay somewhere else :-)

Room Tip: Don't ask for the third floor!

We booked a double room with ensuite for 48 Euros in June. We had a hire car, and although the hostel is on the road fronting the port, this road was closed for contruction work on our visit, and because of pedestrian and one way streets it was difficult to find the hostel. Parking is a problem during the daytime in this area, but we managed to get a space on the service road in front of the hostel.

We got a very friendly welcome from the staff and were given a room at the front of the hostel. The ground floor was being altered on our visit and the kitchen and common rooms were not available, which was a pity. The rest of the hostel had been upgraded to a good standard and the toilet and shower in the room was modern, but rather cramped. The rooms was rather bare and lacking basic furniture, such as a table and chairs, and the bed was rather soft foam. The shutters did not close properly because a sheet of glass had been placed across the lower part of the window. This was a problem because there were no curtains and we were told they had been washed and were not available. The room faces the port and ship buiding yard, and another problem was a continuous noise of machinery, that could still be heard when the window was closed.

The hostel is painted in very strong contrasting colours, which may appeal to younger visitors, but were not very relaxing Overall, the hostel has a lot going for it, particularly its location in the tourist centre, but it needs a few more basic improvemnets to acheive a good standard. Also, it is not particularly cheap compared with other places we stayed in Istria.
