“Nice beach, nice service”
Reviewed 1 September 2014

We spent 7 days in this hotel in August. We booked our accomodation on the website of the German Neckerman which is usually very reliable. Not this time. We had booked a double room and we were given a SINGLE room with a twin bed in this hotel. We were deeply disappointed as we could not even move in this room. We complained and then we were told that our travel agency had asked exactly for this kind of room. In the end, after spending two unconfortable nights in this room, the manager (who was really helpful and kind) found us a double room. We had to pay for the price difference. Anyway the hotel itself is very well managed, clean with nice restaurants and bars. The best part is the beautiful beach:)

Arrived late and very long complicated check in as they had lost the reservation. No apology - was made to feel it was my fault.
Rooms modern and comfortable - good soft beds. Good bathroom with walkin shower good pressure.
Wifi was a joke and had to return to reception to get another code - had already disrobed for the night so had to get dressed again - no apology offered.
Had a very pleasant dinner in a taverna style restaurant in the gardens near the beach.
Good buffet breakfast but was left feeling distinctly underwhelmed

Hotel Ivan common spaces and rooms are really excellent with new and rich furnishing, big comfortable bed, nice and functional bathroom. Several well served bars are available and every evening they play live music in the hall. The hotel is just in the middle of Solaris resort whose attractions you can access within a short walk.
Unfortunately, this is all about positives and my question is "what services do you get in front of the 250€ per day payed?".
No hotel reserved beach, you can of course access for 85 Kunas Solaris beaches with all other people, the issue is not linked to the extra cost but to the fact that they are extremely crowded and you will literally need to walk on the heads of other people to reach the sea. About hotel pool you can forget as, unless you are ready to reserve a sunbed at 7.00h in the morning you will find none; as I'm not, we never used the pool during our 1 week holiday. Sunbeds available can cover no more than 20% of the hotel guests; there would be plenty of space in the gardens to place additional sunbeds but it is not done. Don't forget to bring your own towels from home as no pool/beach free towel service is provided by the hotel. One effect of this is that every guest had to dry their towels out of the room windows and the elegant white facade of Hotel Ivan suddenly turned into a funny coloured patchwork of towels; during our stay the hotel manager wrote a letter to each room asking to guests to kindly refrain from this but giving infact no concrete alternative (what about a free hotel towel service like everywhere else?).
No free wi-fi is provided, but if you subscribe giving your email address you get 20 min free that is clearly not enough.
Hotel parking is not free either but costs 30 Kunas per day; we are not referring to an indoor covered parking but to an external one where your car will remain all day under the sun so this is really not comprehensible, while external guests of Solaris can access a free parking just outside.
In the Sibenik region there are a lot of nice places to visit within 30min drive distance: Murter island beaches in the north, Krka falls inland and Primosten pictoresque village in the south. So we enjoyed our holiday but next time I'd definitely choose a cheaper apartment or hotel outside Solaris. Of course with children the added value to be inside Solaris Resort might be higher but even in this case, you can access the same attractions and prices as all external guests so where is the advantage to stay in hotel Ivan?
One final note about the staff. Welcome at arrival was very cold and the check-in personnel has instructions not to release any room before 15.00h, we had the impression that they did not even check it and let us wait there 2 hours. At restaurant, they are not well organized as one person cleans the tables and another follows the drinks orders; don't ask both things to the same person he won't be able to do it despite some good will by the attendants. This usually delays the operations when you arrive for dinner, and unfortunately they are also quite rigid in the termin of 21.00h when they start removing the food. As a result, if you go for dinner after 20.00h you may end up rushing to get a clean table and some food.

We spent here 5 nights with two small children in August 2014.

Even though I gave three stars to this hotel I would still recommend it but there are a few things that are quite annoying and could be a deal breaker for some guests.

The hotel is one of several in a large resort area. All grounds are beautifully kept and despite the high number of guests it seldom feels crowded because there are several, mostly artificial, beaches that scatter people.

We preferred that you could charge almost anything to your room throughout the resort.

Food was good anywhere we ate but there are only a few choices in every restaurant or snack bar so it can be repetitive after the second time.

Hotel Ivan seems to be the best there is in the resort. It is refurbished hotel but very nicely done so. All decoration are very stylish and well kept. The staff were also trained and helpful and mostly friendly but never rude that we have sometimes experienced in other Croatian hotels.

As the hotel was originally built probably in the sixties or seventies, however, be prepared that the rooms are extremely small (I simply do not understand other reviewers who say it was a big room, they must have been to another hotel.). They are very nicely decorated, clean and comfy but there is hardly enough space for a couple not to mention children. It was not clear for us when we booked so we were a bit surprised. For families, I recommend booking one of the few connecting rooms but they will cost a lot.

Be aware that most of the rooms (the better 'deluxe' ones) have no balconies but a few do. They do not seem to belong to a different category so you will not be able to tell at the time of booking whether you will have the balcony. Normally I would not care about this but with a room so small I would have made a difference for us.

Another annoying issue was the awful internet connection. You can hardly get to the log in page and I simply could not log in in the last two days of our stay. I heard other guests complain too. Only 20 minutes free per day per room, if you are lucky enough to be able to log in. Otherwise it is about 0,70 EUR / hour of 7 EUR per day. I really think that in 2014 it could be expected for a room that costs 180-200 EUR per night to offer free wifi.

It is the same with beach towels. It is not the 3 EUR/day fee but the petty attempt from the hotel management to squeeze some additional cash from you.
Same with highly overpriced drinks at the bars, most food at resort restaurants, beach umbrellas as sunbeds, etc.

Another remark is that the hotel outdoor pool had only a few sunbeds (for about 10% of the hotel guests) and that the water was flowing out from the pool onto the tiled area around that had no drainage. By the afternoon there was water all around that also was flowing back to the pool... not very hygienic.

Other than these it was really a great resort with a lot of activities around for children of any age, a nice 'sandy' beach and many gravel bottom beaches, fair food and nice staff.

I think it was a surprise for us that the evening entertainment that can be quite bothersome in other hotels could not be heard in the rooms after 11:30pm and was not very loud even until this time. The night bars of the beach are located farther away and do not face Hotel Ivan so they are not disturbing either.

All in all I would give this hotel 4-5 stars for its quality and concept but the many little annoying issues made me rank it 3 starts. Still I would visit again if we go to Croatia because it is hard to find better.

Room Tip: The rooms on the corners of the building have balconies. Try to book rooms on the third floor for...

Hotel Ivan is a part of the Solaris beach resort with picturesque surroundings. The rooms are quite small but provides all necessities for a pleasant vacation for 2 in a room. Do not expect more people accomodated even in case of children. If you travel as a family, you will need to take 2 neighbouring rooms.

My objection is to the level of service in the hotel restaurants, where it is far beyound the usual attention and level of other 4* hotels in Europe or even in Turkey. The personnel is undereducated in terms of hospitality and they do not know how to treat guests. After arrival for breakfest the majority of tables is full of used dishes, cuttlery, glasses and waste. There is no one in need to prepare the table for the next guest, in case you find a waiter to clean your table, the dishes are removed but they do not care to clean/change the table cloth and/or remove the leftovers or crumbs on it. Later you have to hypnotize them to come to your table so one can request some hot drinks, they bring you coffee/tea but no cups, when the cups arrive there is no spoon ! The food selection gets boring after 2-3 days, during our week stay it did not change at all.

Be prepared for food & beverage prices cca. 20 % higher than outside the resort, you need to pay for almost everything, incl. towels and sunbeds on the beach. There is very limited number of sunbeds at the pool, but who gets up 5 in the morning to make a towel method reservation (At 8 in the morning is too late )? It is very interesting that you can book 2 sunbeds incl. one umbrella to your room account for 85 kuna/day, but at final account closing you are charged 97,14 kuna ! When asking about the difference the reason is blaimed on the "computer" ?!

The beach gets overcrowded after lunchtime, but places in front of the Sunce fastfood are good and in convenient distance to all ammenities.

All-in-all, after my very first trip to Croatia, I left with a feeling, that for the same amount of money I will better spend my holidays in more service oriented countries, where according to my personal opinion, even hotels in Turkey do a better job ! Sorry Hrvatska :-(

Great hotel/resort for a family with kids. Good breakfast buffet but restaurants a bit boring with average food. I can recommend it but they have to do something with the wifi which was way below average and expectations for a modern resort. Would be a 4 rating if not for the wifi.

Our hotel Ivan at Solaris Resort was recently renovated and the hotel itself is quite nice.

The room was big and functional, it has modern decorations, very comfortable bed and I think the largest TV we've seen in any hotel.

Everything is tidy and everybody was very polite.

Breakfast is tasty, but with a somewhat limited choice for a buffet (after two days it becomes boring).

Beach could be a bit overcrowded in the afternoon, but the sea is generally beautiful.

Children animation is good.

However, there are some issues. Our hotel with bed and breakfast was a bit expensive, but nothing major. However, everything else at the resort feels like a rip off. So, if you'd like a towel, that's 3eur per towel daily, 8eur for the beach chair, 2eur for the resort train ticket, 25eur for dinner at the hotel, 5eur for daily parking, etc. You need to pay extra for literally everything. When you sum all of that, the resort becomes quite expensive and its price becomes comparable with 5* Turkey hotels which are on a noticeably higher level.

(Hotel itself is 5/5, the whole paying extra experience is 3/5, so the final score is an average of those two)
