“Good location, poor design, noisy, disappointing overall”
Reviewed 27 May 2014

The Cattaro is well located on the main square of the old town, just inside the pedestrian zone and close to most of what a visitor to atmospheric Kotor will want to see. The property is a conversion and merger of two historic public buildings, with inevitable compromises. The public areas are elegant and dark, with traditional décor.

Our bedroom was well sized but oddly furnished e.g. there was no desk or any flat surface in front of which a chair could be placed. The safe did not work. The bathroom was small and badly designed – poor storage, no hooks, no soap dish in the shower/bath area.

Breakfast in the elegant Restaurant Royal was an odd experience – no table settings and a small buffet with limited choice and some items out of reach. There was only one staff member to take orders for coffee and cooked food, both of which typically came late and lukewarm.

There is a nightclub under the hotel which generates thumping noise until the small hours. There are other overnight noises also, including the early morning refuse collection from the adjacent square.

WiFi was free and uncomplicated. Staff are pleasant but need training.

Overall, we found our three night stay disappointing. With better management and some design changes, the Cattaro might become the four star hotel it claims to be. In the meantime, despite the excellent location, consider alternatives.

First, the staff were all very nice and helpful. Second, the location inside the city walls was great. On the downside, the rooms all face a plaza which is loud late at night so sleeping is tough. Also hotel is a bit dark.

This is a noisy, badly run hotel with too many uncomfortable quirks and problems to be amusing. For example, room keys that didn't work, rooms without any lights, unmade beds, and a pitch dark staircase that wasn't for guests anyway, but how could anyone know?

A very nice hotel right inside the gates of the old city. Very friendly and helpful staff. The rooms are spacious and most overlook the plaza - window/door opens to outdoor balcony. Rooms very comfortable and very quiet. Nice breakfast included

Right at the heart of Kotor's main square, with rooms built into the fortification - open the shutters and look out over the square with the mountain behind - fabulous. Excellent big bed and superb shower. Very, very polite & friendly English-speaking staff.

The hotel is in the old city. Used to be an army barracks, which explains the long corridor. From what I saw, all rooms look towards the square, over the cafes, which in the summer time would mean noise. The window shutters we closed when I arrived, they must have stayed closed even after the cleaning lady finished. The room was large and with expensive furniture - because of the closed window shutters it was on the dark side.. The satelite TV made aloud noise which meant the volume had to be kept low. The bathroom was OK, although the towel hangers were wobly... Hot water and clean enough.
There are oil paintings (replicas) of 18th century naval officers throughout the hotel, inlcuding the room and breakfast area. Breakfast was OK, nothing fancy. They charge for capuccino! The receptionists were always nice and friendly. Lobby area deserted almost all the time.

We had a big room with an amazing bathroom! Best shower I've had in weeks! The service in this hotel was great, they want to help you with everything. Slept great, almost no streetnoise. (If you want to completely silent location, don't go within the city walls). Would definately go back!

Room Tip: Room 107 had a kingsize bed and enough room to walk around.
