The Cattaro is well located on the main square of the old town, just inside the pedestrian zone and close to most of what a visitor to atmospheric Kotor will want to see. The property is a conversion and merger of two historic public buildings, with inevitable compromises. The public areas are elegant and dark, with traditional décor.
Our bedroom was well sized but oddly furnished e.g. there was no desk or any flat surface in front of which a chair could be placed. The safe did not work. The bathroom was small and badly designed – poor storage, no hooks, no soap dish in the shower/bath area.
Breakfast in the elegant Restaurant Royal was an odd experience – no table settings and a small buffet with limited choice and some items out of reach. There was only one staff member to take orders for coffee and cooked food, both of which typically came late and lukewarm.
There is a nightclub under the hotel which generates thumping noise until the small hours. There are other overnight noises also, including the early morning refuse collection from the adjacent square.
WiFi was free and uncomplicated. Staff are pleasant but need training.
Overall, we found our three night stay disappointing. With better management and some design changes, the Cattaro might become the four star hotel it claims to be. In the meantime, despite the excellent location, consider alternatives.
