“Great location in magical medieval city”
Reviewed 2 September 2009

We loved Kotor! Magical city like a miniature Dubrovnik but without so many tourists and felt more real.

The hotel is in a great location in town, but is not memorable. Although efficient and well run, we were slightly disappointed with our room, which was in the attic and lacked headroom in all but a small strip near the door! Other rooms may be fine. The wood panelling throughout gave the hotel a warm feel, and breakfast was OK.

The room is very basic as is the hotel itself. It all has the East bloc feel.

The hotel is right in the middle of Kotor.

My room was amazingly loud because of all the tourists hanging out in the little square directly under my window.

Breakfast is included and they make any sort of egg dish you want.

Think twice about staying more than one night in Kotor, though. It is cute- but in 3 hours you have seen EVERYTHING. It is more or less boring after that, add in the very basic hotel, and well... you may be counting the hours till your plane takes you home, as i sort of did.

Despite being located in the centre of Kotor, Hotel Marija is not good value. The fittings and fixtures are in need of replacement . We had a broken shower and TV. the hotel was always full of cigarette smoke including upstairs outside the bedrooms where the housemaid smoked and the dining room where other staff also smoked. The breakfast was good and the room was clean however for 90 Euro a night we did not feel that this was good value.

Hotels in Kotor old town are not numerous so we expected to pay more for a good location.

The hotel seemed clean albeit a bit smoky but was pretty dated especially the bathrooms. It was well located though and breakfast was fine if dull.

Kotor itself is very beautiful- make the effort to climb to the fort. There isn't much to see when you get to the top as it is in ruins but the views are breathtaking. Don't do it in the middle of the day though it is very hot and there is no shade.

This is a very warm and friendly hotel situated up a narrow street in the middle of the old town of Kotor. Fortunately, the bar/nightclub opposite the hotel no longer exists which meant that i had a very peaceful night's sleep. There is oak panelling throughout the hotel giving it a warm and traditional feel. Breakfast was a choice of eggs cooked in different ways and bread with butter and jams. There is a bar and restaurant but these were both empty so i ate at the Bastion fish restaurant, which is highly recommended.
All in all a very pleasant stay. If you are looking for a quiet hotel with old fashioned charm its a great option. If you want a modern boutique hotel try somewhere else.

I'd read a good review of Hotel Marija a couple of years ago in a newspaper and magically remembered the name when looking for a hotel this year. The prices have certainly gone up a lot since then but the same can be said of all the hotels in Kotor, some of them dramatically. Hotel Marija still remains one of the cheaper options and in terms of location a good deal.

Booking direct with the hotel by email was easy. They also supplied a great photo map for finding the hotel which is tucked inside the old town close to the main entrance, so not too far to take your luggage over the cobblestones. Service was swift and our bags were carried up to the top floor for us (there's no lift, be warned). Our room was tucked in the eaves, a twin room big enough for two double beds rather than singles. Breakfast was nice, served in the restaurant with a menu to choose from. We didn't have much of a view from our room with the little attic windows but with so much to explore we had no reason to stay in the hotel other than to sleep so that wasn't an issue. We also had no problem with outside noise at all, however we were there midweek in May which isn't high season plus we were on the top floor.

I would definitely stay there again.

  • Liked — Location and price
  • Disliked — There wasn't a lift which could pose a problem for some travelers and tall people might not have appreciated the low sloping ceilings in our top floor room!

We stayed on a Monday night which might explain why we did not hear too much noise from bars etc. However, the hotel was noisy in the morning when people were leaving early and the staff were cleaning. The room was comfortable enough, though a bit worn (esp. the bathroom). The price of the hotel has increased dramatically in the last year so it is no longer really a good budget option. This hotel is not a bad option if you want to stay in the old town as there only appears to be three hotels within the old town walls (one of which is quite expensive and one of which is much cheaper but very tired and could use better cleaning). The views were pleasant and the breakfast was nice (except that there was no real coffee - not even instant coffee).

  • Liked — The location in the old town and nice views
  • Disliked — A bit expensive for the quality, particularly compared to other places on Montenegrin Coast
