“What a find!!!”

I really did not expect such stunning shirtsleeve weather in November at The Stone House. Waking up and looking out of the bedroom window at the stunning view of the bay and mountain backdrop the other side was just amazing. The large and comfortable terrace was ideal for private breakfast in the morning sun. Afternoons were spent walking along the waters edge which started just in front of the The Stone House. Dinner and excellent vintage Croatian wines (a new discovery for me) spent at the large dining table with plenty of room to spread out in the well appointed living room in the after .The beds were comfy, the linen was high quality which all came together to make me I really feel at home here. It was my first time in Montenegro and I was in love with the place as soon as I arrived. The locals were all very friendly and eager to please too, in the grocery shop which is just a few door away and the nearby restaurants within walking distance all just a lovely new experience. A bus service regularly passes by the front of the house and taxis arrive promptly for longer trips. Highly Recommended!!

You are quite right. Montenegro offers all kinds of great experiences and tastes which are not available elsewhere. It is also really refreshing to holiday in a country where the local population embraces visitors from other countries.

Great to hear that The Stone House has the Wow factor! It is also worth reminding ourselves too that the sea is lovely to swim in during October.

“Amazing Montenegrin Experience”

After 38 years of continental travel, the Stone House is quite simply the best holiday villa we have ever stayed in. Internal comfort is superb and front aspect views are stunning. The mountains preside majestically over the Bay of Kotor to create the most breathtaking vista imaginable. With wonderful bars and a local general dealers within easy walking distance there is no need for a car: taxis and buses are cheap and plentiful; the locals are generous and welcoming hosts. With every other holiday, no matter how wonderful, a guest could always find something to say to improve the experience. Not so with the Stone House. It really is the ideal holiday location in a wonderful country which while not "touristy" knows how to greet its visitors with unfailing courtesy. Some of the many highlights included swimming daily in the bay in front of the property, taking two incredibly beautiful boat trips around the bay, eating in the local konabas (restaurant/bars), visiting the jaw-dropping Kotor town and the superyacht marina at Porto Montenegro. Local wines and beer (pivo) are superb and represent superlative value for money. The locally-sourced fresh fish dishes are excellent. We never ate a bad meal in Montenegro. My wife and I will certainly visit James' and Lily's wonderful property in the future. Highly recommended: a unique and mesmerising holiday experience.

“Superb Apartment, stunning location and views..”
Reviewed 9 August 2015 for a stay in July 2015

We enjoyed a fabulous week in Prcanj, and wanted to share our experiences so others could enjoy this wonderful location to the full. The Stone House is well situated in a quiet part of the Kotor bay with the most stunning view of the sea and the mountains. Every day it was magical waking up and looking upon this vista from such a great vantage point. The entire front of the apartment has this superb view, as well as the rear terrace which is a great place to sit and drink beer, read your book, or watch the interesting sailing boats and ships that pass by. The property is rich in character, and is beautifully appointed with high quality furniture and fittings. This is a very comfortable place to spend your holiday, and my wife and I wanted to stay longer !

Within close walking distance is a fantastic shop/mini market which has everything you could need, including the great local Nicksicko beer at around 50p a bottle, and Vranac wine at around £ 2.00. There are also many Konoba restaurants nearby which serve fantastic food (especially the seafood) at extremely reasonable prices. In fact even though the apartment had a superbly equipped kitchen, we seldom used it due to the low cost of eating out, and ease of access to eateries.

Getting around was very easy, and we were happy to use the local blue line buses and red taxis which were extremely good value. The bus is one Euro and takes you all around the bay. The bus will stop wherever it is flagged down, and drop you off wherever you ask the driver to stop (That’s what I call a bus service !). Taxis were around 6 Euros from Prcanj into Kotor which is very reasonable in my book.

Kotor old town was a fantastic historical place to visit and explore. The old fort (Castle of San Giovanni) up the mountain above Kotor is also a must, but I recommend you do it in the early evening, and take some water with you. From here you have an amazing view over the entire bay, but make sure you are fit as there are 1350 steps! Lovcen is another fantastic place to visit as it takes you into the national park area which is full of natural beauty. You will need a hire car, but we found many places that were reasonable for a day’s hire to allow further exploration. The main attraction in Lovcen is the Mausoleum of Njegoš. It is perched on the top of the mountain with incredible views on all sides, and at the bottom of the mausoleum there is a fantastic restaurant where you can drink in the beautiful scenery, and a gin and tonic ! Other highlights were Porto Montenegro where there are many incredible boats to see along with some superb restaurants and bars. We met lots of interesting people from all over the world here and you can see that this is an up and coming place to keep your eye on, especially if you are interested in sailing events.

We were fortunate enough to take a boat trip around the bay and out to the sea, and from the water is where you really see the best of what Kotor has to offer. On this trip we took in Perast, Sveti Dorde, our lady on the rocks, and Sveti Stefan. For lunch our guide took us to the most fantastic restaurant overlooking the mouth of the Adriatic called “Forte Rossa” which was one of the highlights of our trip (If you go make a reservation to avoid disappointment) . On the way back he took us into some submarine pens previously used by the Yugoslavian Navy, and we finished up swimming off the boat in a tranquil cove.

The neighbours below were so kind to us, helping us out with directions to the places we wanted to visit, and inviting us to taste their locally brewed domestic liquor “Rakia”. In fact all the Montenegrin people we met during our trip were very warm and friendly. The Montenegrin people aren’t gushing or forward, but if you take the time to speak to them and be polite, they are some of the warmest kindest people you can ever wish to meet. As an example I collect coffee cups and when I asked a restaurant owner if I could buy a cup he said “No” “they are not for sale”. I was disappointed but at the end of my meal they gave me an entire boxed set of 6 cups and saucers. The moral being that they wouldn't sell them to me but were happy to give them to me as a gift !

This sums it up for me, and I can’t wait to go back to Montenegro again, as I am sure there is so much more to discover. The Stone House was a fantastic place to stay in a fantastic location, and made this one of the best holiday experiences ever.

“Nice accommodation but beware information”
Reviewed 28 July 2015 for a stay in July 2015

Accommodation itself was good. Nice house, big balcony, lovely lounge / diner. The local beach was great fun for kids and there is a lovely beach bar area in Bajova Kula that we kept on going back to (couple of buses to get there though). The views and landscape are stunning and the area lovely. There are a few restaurants that are walkable but not many - most require a bus trip further afield.

Although very good it was let down by a couple of points:

The air conditioning is only in the main lounge, not bedrooms so got pretty hot at night. Not enough to cause problems but not comfortable.

The "bed" in the third bedroom is just a couple of mattresses on the floor. No actual bed. Our young kids didn't care but others might.

The information provided wasn't accurate:

The house is a few miles from Kotor and nearest beach. The bus only runs once per hour, not every 20 minutes so harder to get around than expected. This didn't spoil the holiday but it was harder to get places than we thought it would be. We could have rented a car but that would be extra cost and driving looked to be a nightmare (very narrow roads).

Be aware you need to register on arrival or you could get stopped at border control when you try to exit. Apparently this should be arranged by the people who welcomed us and they collect local tax as stated in information. This didn't happen and that led to a very nervous taxi drive through the borders. Next time we'll make sure we review all government guidance on these things rather than rely on property management.

One for owner - get rid of the spiky plant! It takes over half the balcony and blocks the view.

I would recommend the property for others but need to go into it with eyes open.

Thanks for your review, and I am glad you enjoyed your holiday and the accommodation. We really appreciate the fact that you would recommend our property to others.

You have raised some interesting points to help us improve the experience for our guests.
• There is a substantial air conditioning unit in the lounge / dining room. I am sorry that it did not cool you as effectively as you wished.
• The third bedroom is laid out in two formats according to the pictures on the website. I am glad your kids enjoyed it. It provides guests with flexibility to decide if they want ‘single or double’ accommodation in that room.
• The Stone House is approximately 8 Km from Kotor. We have placed an approximate 10-15 minute travel time by car on it.
• You are quite correct about the buses running every 60 minutes and not every 20 minutes. This was the result of a change the timetable due to lower visitor #’s in Montenegro this year which I had not picked up on. Apologies for any inconvenience this caused. I understand you ordered ‘Red Taxi’s to collect you from the appartment which is a very convenient and cost effective way to travel. I think you were right not to rent a car. I never do during the summer period.
• I am sorry you felt nervous crossing the border to Croatia but understand you passed through without any bother. You made the right decision in hiring our preferred taxi driver. He travels through the border several times a day to Dubrovnik and back and in my experience personally knows every passport officer in Montenegro and Croatia. I think there may have been some misunderstanding between you and him on this. You should be provided with details on how to register by our local property manager. I believe this took place, but it appears on this occasion our property manager was not explicit enough in what was required. I am working to resolve that. We do not want guests to feel anxious.

“Excellent all round first experience of Montenegro - thank you!”

10 June 2015
We've just returned from a wonderful week spent at The Stone House which provided for an incredible first experience of being in Montenegro. The house itself boasts all the facilities required to make for more than an enjoyable stay. The outside terrace being incredibly comfortable at any time of day and provided the pies de resistance. We hired bikes from Oasis rentals in Kotor and had fun cycling around the stunning local area, stopping off at the many "watering holes" enroute. Whilst not being the easiest climb up (1350 steps!) the views on the way up to the fortress, above the old town, truly are spectacular and we would recommend making the effort. Local fare in the old town is a pretty good standard across all restaurants but one restaurant which did stand out for us was our penultimate meal in the Galion for the views, food and service. I cannot recommend the Stone House and the area more highly. Thank you James and Lily for being so accommodating, support for booking flights, for all the information provided in the Housebook and providing the contact for Bojan for our lift to and from Dubrovnik airport. An all round excellent experience! We will be back :-)
