Ancient stadium is a small, but well preserved place with special historical atmosphere. All around are some buildings, shops and restaurants. It´s connection between old (history) and modern (present time). It´s for free. Worth a short visit!

The Ancient Stadium of Philippopolis is located under the main pedestrian street of Plovdiv. Its most northern part is open at Djumaya Square. There you can go down to the underground area of the square, at the original level of the ancient city.

You can access the track, the semicircular section with spectator seats and a panoramic wall with a reconstruction of the disappeared space of the Ancient Stadium.

Along the main street are the exposed elements of the Ancient Stadium.

In the underground space there is also a presentation center with public functions related to the dissemination of information about the Ancient theatre.

It is interesting how low the stadium is. You can easily imagine how big it was. We didn't go inside as we've chose to spend our leva at the other similar attraction: Plovdiv Roman Theatre.

People drive to Plovdiv to see the Ancient Amphitheatre. On your walk to the Ancient Amphitheatre don't forget to check our the ruins and information about the Ancient Stadium of Philippopolis. It is easy to find and interesting to people of all ages. At the end or perhaps the start of the walking street - it is a helpful meeting place, a good place to people watch, have a snack / drink or take the time to wonder about its history and life many centuries ago.

... and hard to miss, since the town has essentially been built around it. You can look down onto it from street level and wander down to get a better look; there's even an upscale bar where you can have a drink as you ponder the passage of time. What you can see is one end of the large stadium, which at one point held an estimated 30,000 people. I think plans are underway to open more of it, which lies under the main pedestrian shopping street.
