Just imagine stumbling across a fantastic Breugel painting (Massacre of the Innocents) in rural Romania! This is a real gem of a museum - not only the Bruegel, but so many other world-class works.
In one wing of the museum there was an excellent exhibition of dance cards - used by women to record to whom they were promised for each dance of the evening at a ball. A fascinating piece of social history.
You've be mad to miss this museum!

Thank Heather P

It costs next to nothing and is just a treat when you're wanting to get off the road. I spent an hour playing dress up!

I only saw the European and Romanian art. You do pay separately for every exhibit and I recommend skipping European art as it's only like 2 rooms and costs 20 Lei. The Romanian art is interesting though! A good place to go on a rainy day.

We went on a Sunday as it seemed a Sunday thing to do and weren't disappointed. Huge collection of paintings, both European and Romanian. We had met some Romanian people on our travels who were obviously very proud of this museum and strongly advised us to visit. Beautiful Chinese panels were my favourite as were the collection of old spectacles in the library and the beautiful and peaceful courtyard redolent of the fragrance of roses. Staff are friendly once you recognise they are only doing their job protecting this valuable collection of which they are rightly proud. Nice collection of postcard images of some of the paintings can be purchased in the souvenir shop.
