Worth bringing a guide, for there is so much history in here that it will add very much to the experience. The catacombs are small, but well preserved (no photos allowed), and it was not too crowded when we went, though I could see how it could be a frustrating trip were there too many people.

Wish photos were allowed here, but they were so interesting. A lot of stairs-to be expected I suppose.

Visited this site independently and without a guide, just with info from a well known guide book. Found it a bit dissapointing really, but I'm sure having a guided visit would enhance the experience. Not a great deal to it compared with other Egyptian sites but worth a visit if in Alexandria as part of a cruise or wider tour.

If you're in Alexandria you have to go there but I found it only OK. It's like walking around in an old underground cave with holes dug into the walls and occasional decorative aspects or coffins. I'm probably jaded after having seen so many wonderful sites in the rest of Egypt.

What a great experience walking down into the catacombs and seeing the Roman/Greek/Persian ruins. These catacombs have layers of interest with extreme carvings and history and are in wonderful state to appreciate. Go early like we did with our Ramses guide Ahmed, before the crowds hit and the closeness of the tombs with too many people can get to you! This was one of the top 3 spots we enjoyed on this trip.
