“Spooky”

I went there with a friend and shortly after entering the catacombs we were joined by a cat who showed us around. It never left us but stopped every so often at various tombs for us to 'examine the exhibit' others it just walked past. A wonderful guide and it didn't ask for a tip!

“Very much a waste of time”
Reviewed 28 January 2014

I went to the tourist information centre in Sousse which was seemed to be doubled as an office for other purposes and tourism was secondary. There was a few leaflets about general locations (such as Al Munastir or Sfax) but nothing really specific in the area.

The Thompsons hotel Reps suggested the usual organised tours to the market in Sousse but nothing else. We found some literature on the internet about a set of catacombs within Sousse which interested us. We had previously been to the catacombs in Paris and thought this would be a good local example.

We paid our entrance fee and walked around the circular subterranean path with two very incomplete (and uninteresting) skeletons. We heard english voices and realised these people were being given a “guide tour”. The guide told us to wait 10 minutes and he would see us.

10 minutes afterwards he joined us and took us beyond a locked gated. we were given a candle (with no drip guard) and duly followed. We had already read the history of the catacombs so nothing the guide told us was new. He asked to take our photographs against an uninspiring cave roughly carved out of the ground. We refused as it was A) uninteresting B) a rubbish photo opportunity and C) we’ve experienced people demanding money for taking photographs in Rome (at the Colosseum in Rome and on various locations on the Nile in Egypt). At the end of a very boring tour with no human remains we were demanded extra payment. We refused. He gone angry. And i stepped in with my usual scottish bravado to ‘square up to him’ after which he backed down.

It was an empty catacombs which 2 very dismal specimens for effect. In all there is a bully tactic to extract extract money beyond the entrance fee. You have to be pretty tough to stand up to the “demand” from the guide.

Very disappointing in content, quality and service.......

“Hard to find”

If you are a catacombs aficionado, this small section of a second rate provincial underground necropolis might delight, otherwise not worth the effort

“why would you?”
Reviewed 22 November 2013

Nothing to see, there is quite literally nothing there, no one to show you around, and it's very badly lit
Very disappointing, the taxi driver even offered to wait because we wouldn’t be in there more than 5 minutes!
go round the corner to Dar Am Taib!
