“A reprieve from Mandalay”
Reviewed 20 March 2013

Anyone who would want a hotel in the heart of the city of Mandalay needs their head examined. There is nothing exotic or, to say the least, pleasant about Mandalay. It is a crowded, bustling, noisy and unkempt city. Therefore, being a bit removed from the centre of the city, the Rupar Mandalay, for the two nights we spent there, was a godsend. We stayed in the family suite, which to our surprise was humongous beyond our wildest expectations; an anteroom, living room with a bar and fridge and 3 large bedrooms. All of the rooms panelled and floored in teak. Our bed was the largest I have ever slept in. The grounds and the pool are gorgeous and the staff are extremely helpful and friendly. The breakfast buffet was good - not outstanding. The room service we ordered was disappointing but it was probably a mistake to order pizza in Myanmar. They are constructing a new wing so there is some unobtrusive noise during the day. We had a lovely stay and would not hesitate to stay there again.

We stayed one night on Jan 26,2013 and this was one of the worst hotel experiences i have had in my many years of travelling in Asia. We had a confirmed prepaid reservation for a deluxe room and on check in we were taken to a tiny closet like room in which the bed hardly even fit. We spoke to the manager on duty and were told absolutely no other rooms were available. After 15 minutes we again called him and he moved us to a regular room which was bigger but very noisy as it was on the main road.We settled down and went to dinner. We ordered Thai food which was bland and tasteless. Then on our return to the room the worst part of this stay happened. At turndown service the housekeeper took the wet dirty towels which were crumpled on the floor and folded them and put it back on the rack.We called the manager again and explained how unsanitary and unhealthy this was. Again like with the room he was arrogant and nasty and really did not care. To further insult me he offered to take 10% off my dinner bill. We told him it was one of the dirtiest experiences ever experienced in a hotel but he did not care or even apologize.Lastly as other reviews have said sleep was not possible as the pillows were rock hard.

We stayed there for 3 nights early March. The hotel is certainly a boutique hotel and a good one (less than 30 rooms). The location is at the outskirts of Mandalay (10 minutes' drive from down town) so if you don’t have a guide and a driver it's a bit far to get there, though the advantage is that the surrounding is quite and it's all surrounded by beautiful and large garden ( in any case, down town Mandalay is not a great place to spend the evening in). Rooms are all wood, very nice and well equipped. Hotel staff are helpful polite and friendly. Rooms are clean and the breakfast buffet near the swimming pool is good, as well as the dinner.
At the beginning we received the villa which was specious and very beautiful but it had 2 beds instead of one king size, so at the second night, upon our request they moved us to a king size bed which was nice but not as nice and as specious as the villa.
The overall review is- Yes! Good hotel, good atmosphere and a good relaxation after a busy day in Mandalay.

After being advised by family who'd done a similar Burma trip to us that we shouldn't need to stay too long in Mandalay - we only had one night stopover at this hotel - so the fact that the they were carrying out work on the hotel, the hotel was out of town and our room was nearest the road - wasn't too much of a problem. Agree that the bathroom could have been a bit bigger. The pool looked lovely but we didn't have time to take what would have been a much needed dip. However, some other guests told us that during the afternoon there were about 20 local children using the pool as the hotel apparently gives them a good rate. Our friends' guide had previously complained about this to the hotel. Very good of the hotel, but after a morning sightseeing you just want a leisurely dip in the pool without too much noise around you. Perhaps they should consider 9-10am in the morning for the children - as the guests will either be having breakfast or out and about. We were also charged $3 a can of coke from the minibar - yet the next hotel we went to charged $1!

Room Tip: Ask to be away from the road or from the work on the extension.

I agree with most of the reviewers. We are currently in the resort, it is exquisite, we dine in a garden with Myanmar marionette show and low key dancing. It is out of town, the only problem is that you have to pay dollars for your supper as you can't nip into a local restaurant as we did in bagan. The bathroom is rather odd and although we are in a suite of three grand rooms, two are shared, our bedroom is smallish. Teak floors everywhere, everything opulent but only two little problems. The pool is wonderful and I had to pinch myself that I was swimming in Mandalay in the evening in march!

Location: As others have noted the hotel is a bit away from everything which is mostly goood because the sound and the smell form the streets is much reduced, on the other hand it will leave you with no choice where to eat.

Overall layout: A very nice layout with a lot of open space and trees, a very nice large pool (not heated), breakfast is served al fresco under trees (choose your seat with care, the wooden planks can make for sudden movements of the tables) 3 restaurants, all nicely decorated, very wooden. The stay comes with a 15 minute complimentary massage, very nice to have your feet and legs stretched a bit in the evening and a traditional puppet theatre in the evening (for free but the music is not that nice to listen to by western standards)

Rooms: Very dark in the decoration with a very nice and extralarge bed, large TV set, bathrobe and slippers and enough space. (rooms 1-10). The bath is a bit oon the small side but did do the job, all needed amenities were to be found and the room was very clean. The one big issue we had with this room was the more or less total lack of noise insulation. If the alarm clock in room x set off, rooms x+1 and x-1 were wide awake. So whatever you do, people in the neighbouring rooms will hear it and vice versa. This caused some serious sleepping trouble and this leads to two points lost.

Food: Basically the breakfast is very good. Hot and cold dishes, cereals, rolls, jam, eggs the way you want them a very nice noodle soup and sitting outside in the sun made for a nice setting. Alas: The first night we were alone at breakfast that menat many supposedly hot dishes were not heated. The second morning some more guests arrived and that meant that some items quickly vanished to never be replaced and the eggorders got mixed up.
We had dinner one evening and were not impressed at all with the food quality especially the lack of spices. So if you can skip it, no loss. If you want to order a cocktail, that can take quite a while 25-30 minutes, so the second time we did it I ordered a beer for the waiting period.

Staff: Generally very friendly and helpful but the moment things got a little wrong that´s when they got nasty. We were told that two bottles of water from the minibar were free and after we did check out our car was literally blocked to get some money from us for the one bottle we actually took.

Spend 2 nights here with our tour group. As others
have noted, 'resort' is outside central city but in a
zone with many other properties under construction.
Overflow from our group occupied guest houses
associated with a new high-rise
hotel nearby. My room was practically in the road
along which trucks, tuk-tuks and all manner of honking
traffic rumbled. I was surprised and very pleased that
I had little difficulty sleeping. Most rooms are far from
the road. Mosquitoes entered the bath and there was
quite a collection of dead ones in the tub each morning
as I showered. Adjusting the shower spray and the
water temperature were a challenge not needed each
morning. We had dinners and breakfast at the hotel,
all served outside. The food was quite good, the lighting
was quite dim. Try the fish soup for breakfast. Puppet
show and dancing was interesting the first night. Staff
were eager to please but couldn't do anything about
defects in my room. Would consider the new high-rise
hotel - or its guest houses - nearby for another visit.
