“Very good but out of the city”
Reviewed 20 February 2014

If you don't mind being outside of the center (you'll anyway need a vehicle to move around the city), this is a great place to stay. The city is really busy anyway so it feels good to get back to this hidden oasis at the end of the day. We didn't mind being slightly outside.

The service is really excellent, the rooms very nice and clean. Food is very good but a little bit too pricey. The only other restaurant in the area (5 minutes walk) is also good and much cheaper, worth the walk along the creepy road. Unfortunately you won't have much other choices unless you're willing to go for a 10-15 minutes ride to the center.

The hotel has been built on/in the middle of rice fields, hence there is a lot of mosquitos at night. The staff is doing everything that is humanly possible to fight against mosquitos but that is a fight you can never really win.. Nevertheless they did a great job and it didn't disturb too much. Evening at the restaurant were lovely.

The hotel is being expanded but the construction is happening during the day, when everybody is out in town so it wasn't a problem at all. It looked nearly finished: it should be ready within the next 2-3 months.

Wifi was working well but very slow depending the time of the day, like everywhere else in the country.

We would definitely stay there again.

We travelled in a family of six staying in three rooms. The hotel is designed as such that three ensuite rooms are grouped into its own wing, sharing a large living room and bar area. This worked out perfectly for us. The hotel was built recently and everything was still in fairly good condition. However, be careful of the shower's pipes in the bathroom. The water can get very hot which makes the pipes hot. One person in our party accidentally touched her arm on the the pipe when showering and had a nasty burn. The location on the outskirts of town did not bother us as it doesn't seem like there was much to see and do in town although your dining choices may then be limited to the hotel itself. We mainly ate from the Burmese menu which was very good.

Mandalay is a hard city to love...it's hot, dusty and noisy. After a day sightseeing returning to Rupar Mandalar was a welcome refuge. Staff were very attentive, rooms were lovely as were the grounds. As mentioned it is on the outskirts of Mandalay, which is in partly why I chose it, it does make it difficult to go out for dinner, however, food in the restaurant while more expensive then a local restaurant was good.

It has a nice swimming pool, gives a free fifteen minute food massage and drink coupons for each night. I made use of all of them. Highly recommend this very comfortable hotel.
currently it is a small hotel, but should be noted they have a substantial expansion project under way near the pool. We were never bothered by any construction noise.

A pleasant , if rather bland, tourist hotel situated on the outskirts of Mandalay. Accomodation is in single level blocks situated around a central reception area. Our room was excellent and both welcome and service efficient and particularly friendly. Food was good (3 restaurants were advertised but only one appeared open) and the breakfast excellent. They are currently expanding the accomodation so some construction is going on in the pool area. The biggest downside is its remote location, there is nowhere to walk out to and no local alternative to dinner in the hotel. Wifi only available in reception.

We stayed here for two nights at the beginning of our trip to Burma. Although not right in town this is not a problem as you have to go everywhere by car in Mandalay anyway. Warm welcome and super rooms, we had two doubles as we are a family of four connected by a lounge. As we have children to have the pool was great. The was some construction noise but this finished at 5pm- I think they are extending. We walked to a restaurant nearby - A touch of Mandalay, which was ideal. We also enjoyed the free 15 minute massage.

The glories of the Rupar Mandalar include its spacious and beautifully landscaped grounds; its two magnificent dining terraces, one for breakfast and one for dinner; the superb food served at both meals; the delightful nightly entertainment performed on the dining terrace and consisting of music dance and puppetry; and, most of all, its charming, devoted and endearing staff.

The dinner cuisine merits further discussion. The menu is overly long and at first a bit bewildering; it includes Chinese, Thai and Western dishes. But everything we ordered (mostly Chinese dishes) was excellent, so in that sense you can’t go wrong. There’s also a separate Myanmar set-course menu, which must be ordered three hours in advance. We chose this option one night, and once again everything was superb.

Our deluxe room didn’t quite live up to the excellence of the public spaces. Though attractively paneled in teak, it was small, somewhat lacking in storage space and a bit dark. The walls between rooms were thin.

But our test of whether to give a hotel five stars is not whether the hotel was perfect. Rather, it’s whether, when our stay is up, we find it hard to leave. When our four-night stay at the Rupar Mandalar was up, we definitely felt a tug at our hearts.

On the whole the hotel is excellent. It seems a pity to cut to the only problems but it's quicker.
1. Location - you will have to spend a little more on taxis staying here, but not much and the taxi drivers spoke excellent English and had good conversation.
2. Building work - until mid way through 2014 an extension is being build to the hotel. This involves a lot of building noise from 8am until 5pm. We received an apology letter for the disturbance, but no further attempt to make up for the lack of peace and quiet throughout the day.
On a more positive note, I cannot speak highly enough of the staff on reception. They gave us a lot of advice and assistance, always with a smile.

Room Tip: We had two different rooms in two stays. Both were equally good.
