“The best hotel in Mandalay - by far!!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 January 2010

Sadly we've stayed at the very poor "Mandalay Hill View Resort" and since my father wants to visit Myanmar next christmas we've decided to check out the other hotels for him. We checked "Hotel by the Red Canal" which is very nice - but I didn't like the location, too much rubbish laying around. When we arrived to "Rupar Mandalar Resort" we were very warmly welcomed and even after we said that we just want to have a look we were guided around the Resort incl. rooms etc. When we saw what Mandalay offers in respect of Hotels we were very sad that we stayed elsewhere. Rupar Mandalar Resort is stunning, the pool, the pool deck, the entrance, the setting for dinner, the rooms... 5 star at its best! If I would one day come back to Mandalay it would be Rupar Mandalar - nothing else!

By the way, the location is a bit remote (5 min. driving from town) but on the other hand it makes it more quite and less rubbish laying around.

We stayed at the hotel for 2 nights last week. This is the coldest season (although also high season for tourists) in Myanmar and the temperatures during night can fall to 5-7C. We were not prepared for it, but neither was the hotel. They don't have any heaters, the hotel rooms are built in the shade, so they do not warm up even during the day when it is 20-25C outside. Moreover, they don't have even good blankets and there was a problem with a hot water in the shower (the shower itself in our room was pretty bad and almost broken, so it really needs replacement). As a result of our stay there I got cold and sore throat, so have the worst memories of this place right now.

On rooms, they are quite nice and comfy (except for problems described above), kitchen is not very good, they have a big menu but the food is not tasty (at least for us). The SPA is quite good, but beware of choosing combinations which include sauna and massage. Myanmar people seem to be unfamiliar with sauna concept and it all looked very funny and not thought through. Staff is nice but most of them don't speak good English so it was hard to communicate our issues to them.

Our overall impression of Myanmar has been more on a negative side so far, but this hotel definitely stands out as the most unpleasant experience.

We stayed over Christmas 2007 and had a fantastic time. They have nice rooms, lush grounds, a variety of restaurants, a huge pool, a gym and a spa. They made Chistmas very special by serving an incredible dinner with traditional Burmese musicians & dancers entertaining which was brilliant! We'd highly recommend the Rupar Mandalar. We'd also recommend booking through a Burmese agent in Rangoon as you can get much better rates.
