We spent four nights here and found this an excellent choice where we got full value for the money spent. The staff was most friendly and helped us organize our sightseeing around town and outskirts. Most of all it is clean.

On arrival we were told that only a superior room was available for $44. The room on the ground floor near reception had a superior view of the wall next door. Didn't get any sleep here because of noise from an air con unit vibrating outside the window against a loose piece of corrugated iron. It was clean, you are simply paying for extra space.

A standard room was available to us the next night at$38 on the 5th floor (lift available). This was significantly better and we slept for the first time in Myanmar.

The staff here were great especially the ladies on reception during daytime and were honest about some of the tours on offer. They prebooked our next hotel visit for us too.

I've stayed in this hotel for one night. It's an average hotel with average price.

Pro:
1. Room is spacious.
2. Staff is helpful. They showed me some local convenience shop which was really convenient. Also the hotel staff helped arrange a private day tour which reasonable price.

Con:
1. The facilities are out-dated.
2. Breakfast is a little bit simple.

Small room but acceptable. The problem I faced was the noisy street corner not far and the fact the windows were not properly closing, so I could be waked up pretty early in the morning by the honk of the motorbikes. The buffet for breakfast was OK. Be careful on the pricing, I did not reserved in advance, but when I arrived at reception they told the room fare indicated on their website was not correct... because website is outdated! Free PC access at the lobby which is useful.

After our first night in Mandalay at a wreck of a place (chosen blind from an agent's directory back at Inlay Lake), we asked a driver for help and he took us here. For many travelers this is probably an Average property. But to us it looked "Very Good" for Burma. Comfortable room, everything worked including air con & wifi. Very friendly staff, who enjoyed helping us get the print-outs we needed. BIG Asian breakfast buffet upstairs with city view. Well located.

We took a short river trip up to a village with yet more temples and touts; sorry the name escapes me, but it was quite fun to be on the immense Irrawady, watching the fascinating river traffic.

It's true Mandalay is mostly charmless. But Amitav Ghosh's wonderful book The Glass Palace begins here, and may help you appreciate its history.

Room Tip: Spend the extra $6 for a Superior room and ask for the back, away from the street. The generator out...

If we were planning our trip over, we would avoid Mandalay. It is a city devoid of much character or charm. As there is not much selection of mid-range hotels, the Silver Swan was an OK option, but the rooms are very tired and dated. The lobby is nice and it was probably a nice hotel in its prime, but it has not been maintained well. There are not many restaurants in the area, and walking at night is somewhat difficult due to a lack of navigable sidewalks and streetlights. The staff were nice and there was a fairly extensive buffet breakfast, but overall we did not enjoy our stay in Mandalay, even though we explored many parts of the city.

Pros:
- rooms are clean
- bed is very comfortable
- good breakfast buffet (included in the price).
- staff is very friendly
- wifi is free and fast

Cons:
- the location which is 15 mins from all the main sights
- if you have a room in the back: the noise of the generator

Still: value for money
