Beware the boat ride is great but the pony and trap is dusty and bumpy you'll be glad to get off. The monastry is fantastic with each wooden column being one tree.

Bargaya monastery is wholly made by wood. Considering the number of monks living there, i would say it is really big. The monastery is quite dark in side even you go there at noon. But you will quickly find it impressive.

About 30 min by car south of Mandalay, near the airport - a short ferry trip to the island, then a horse cart ride to find this monastery with excellent wood carvings among rice fields and palm trees.

This is quite unique.
And great for a change if you are tired of all the golden stupas and buddhas.
There are not so many people coming here and it's great to take a nap in the or to do some meditation.

One of the few wooden monasteries to visit in Mandalay. If I recall correctly, one of the ticket checkpoints. You can use the inner Mandalay pass for this place and save some money.

Generally, all the wooden monasteries are beautifully carved. You will spend quite some time admiring the carvings here. Besides this, the other wooden monasteries are Shwenandaw (Golden Palace) Monastery covered by the Mandalay pass and Shwe In Bin Monastery, which is free to visit. It is roughly halfway between the palace and mahamuni pagoda but much to the western side just next to the river. Ask the locals to get there.
