“Superior Hotel Stay”
Reviewed 15 April 2012

I stayed at this lovely huge hotel right after Typhoon Nargis -- there were very few people there at the time but they made our stay as perfect as possible. I don't understand some of the reviews as sufficient ----- this hotel is far from 'sufficient'. Beautifully designed rooms with views of their gorgeous pool and spa area and the mountain behind. All five star services were unexpected, such as CNN and some other USA programs at night in this military-ruled country. If you didn't get your news, you just ask the desk to please turn the satelite for about couple hours -- depending on which country of people are at the hotel at your time. I found this the situation in all the hotels when going over the International Date line. They always had a ride for me when I needed it; let me swim until late if I wanted to; delicious food choices and since they had to limit the electricity, they would watch me coming & going and make sure it was all on while I was there.
I couldn't have asked for more. It's not in the middle of town, but transportation is cheap, so no one should complain about that. If you didn't know you were NOT in town, then you didn't do your homework!

Room Tip: I don't think there is a bad choice -- depends if you want to see the pool and spa OR the temple...

This was a lovely place to stay, not far from the hubbub of central Mandalay. We loved the bar - and the breakfast was to die for. Our favorite was the coconut noodle soup! Great service and lovely rooms. This is a very nice hotel.

The Mandalay Hill Resort is an attractive upscale modern high-rise at the base of Mandalay Hill, not far from the palace wall and moat but a couple of miles from central Mandalay. There is not much around so you will need your own transport or be willing to take taxis. This large hotel caters to tour groups and offers all the amenities of a city resort – huge lobby with soaring ceiling, attractive outdoor swimming pool, spa, fitness center, etc., etc. One downside to the presence of so many tour groups, though, is that the elevators are impossibly overbooked at checkout time, and the breakfast restaurant is anything but serene. Be prepared to avoid these times or get a room on a lower floor and use the stairs.

My wife and I stayed here for three nights in Feb. ‘12 as part of a tour. Our room (630) was good-sized and nicely appointed with a comfortable double bed, dresser, luggage stand, desk, reading chair and small table, and a mini-bar. There was a built-in closet with ample storage space and an in-room safe. The large window overlooked the pool and garden area. Rooms on the other side of the hall would have a view of the palace grounds and the city beyond. The bathroom had adequate room and was attractive, with a tub/shower combo and a single sink. There was only a small amount of counter space.

Wi-fi is available but we thought it was very expensive – $2 per hour – though you can get a daily rate of $5. Likewise the restaurant prices seemed exorbitant to us given the cost of goods and labor in Myanmar, but the food was pretty good.

Although it is hard to fault the facilities at the Mandalay Hill we would not stay here again and would instead opt for something more reasonable in a more central location. This is a matter of personal preference, though and many others are likely find the Mandalay to be ideal.

I stayed at the Mandalay Hill Resort. It wasn't and isn't a 5 star, but if you need a bed to rest at, and want a good location, especially in relation to the hill (which is breathtaking) and was our highlight of Mandalay, then I would recommend staying here. The service was always welcoming and helpful. The restaurant had good food, although the breakfast buffet wasn't very good.

We saw the puppet show in the evening, and it was really sweet.

The hotel also takes credit card, which is a bit unusual for Myanmar in general.

Our group of 30 stayed here a couple of nights in March 2012. We agreed that this was an excellent hotel for us. On our first night there was a garden party with puppet show. Well, puppet shows are not the top for me, but the surroundings were breathtaking. After the show we planned to go to the Kipling bar off the reseption, but the girl band there played so loud that we couldn't stand it, Too bad.
The swimming pool area was attractive, the breakfast buffet was excellent.

The hotel is big on the 'bling' and has a corporate feel about it. You wouldn't know you are in Myanmar at all.

The rooms are exactly what you would expect for a 4 star hotel, no surprises or creative touches. It delivers everything you need for a comfortable stay. Extras, such as internet are very expensive as is the restaurant. The staff are not overly helpful.

The best feature of the hotel is the pool, large, very clean and lovely and cool. IT was over 40 degrees when we were there and it was the perfect place to cool down after a day's sightseeing.

I would recommend the hotel if you are happy in a large, comfortable yet bland hotel.

We stayed at the Mandalay Hill Resort for 3 nights in mid February. It used to be a Novotel hotel, and road signs still show Novotel. The room was a large end unit, with good views of the sun setting over the Irrawaddy River. The room was OK, but close to needing a renovation.
At times the hotel was really good, next day quite poor. It seemed to cater mainly to large tour groups, so the buffet breakfast could get busy. Although there was a menu for dinner, it was expensive, and looking after the dinner buffet meant the ordered meal can get lost in the crowd - so first time it was good, second the meal arrived late and cold.
There is a Chinese Restaurant upstairs which was really nice, reasonable prices, good food, and excellent service, but it was only open one night of our stay.
The $5 for internet was an annoyance, although the 24 hour limit was connect time, not consecutive, and one fee lasted for our stay. The wi-fi worked well.
The staff were friendly, and did their best, but not the same spark seen at the other hotels we were at in Myanmar.
A taxi was needed to get into town, although a couple of temples were close by.
The hotel could have been very good, but the inconsistent restaurant, high meal prices, and paying for internet put it in the average column.
