“Overrun with mosquitoes, poorly trained staff and bad internet”
Reviewed 26 January 2014

Bedrooms and foyer overrun with mosquitoes, this would be particularly hazardous in Dengue season. Customer service is limited. I do not hold staff to blame overall they are pleasant and obliging though they clearly need better training. Issues. really poor internet connectivity and no internet available in the room. Noisy air-conditioning, poor room cleaning. One staff member involved in food and drink service coughed continually and appeared to be ill for nearly a week. should have been given sick leave or at the very least moved to non public contact duties. Threadbare linen, poorly tuned television, and the gym with antiquated equipment and strong mouldy smell.
One staff member, the porter should be commended as he was exceptional in terms of his attention to customers.

Room Tip: Choose another hotel. Management clearly have not been interested to improve the hotel.

When I first stayed at Mandalay Swan, some ten years ago, I felt it was unexceptional and wallowing in averageness. On a recent visit I was struck by how they have maintained that tradition of mediocrity.

On the good side: decent breakfast, good egg lady. Room size was ok and quiet. Clean enough, but a few mosquitoes. But acceptable overall.

Otherwise...

The hotel has a run-down, neglected feel.

Cramped toilet - have to step into shower cubicle in order to close the door.

Virtually no international TV channels As I mentioned in another review of a Myanmar hotel,it is bizarre that hotels, bars, restaurants far, far up the Chindwin River, in very isolated parts of the country, can receive dozens of international channels, while hotels in Mandalay and Yangon offer a handful of TV misery.

Poor guest relations by reception staff. Examples: I was told by a friend that I could ask for the "international TV programs." This request was received by reception without complaint and the guy said "I'll call you and let you know." Of course there was no call. When I pushed they sent the engineer, who said, "sorry, maybe tomorrow." It never happened "tomorrow." The second day I noticed that there were two or three additional international channels that miraculously appeared, but nothing worth watching. I understand very well the unwillingness of staff to say "No, sorry, can't do it." But if someone promises to get back to me I expect that call. Ditto for when I asked if my laundry was ready. "I'll check and call you right away." Of course no call came and it took three calls before I got my laundry. These problems are ony partly attributable to poor English (although the English is poor). There is little recognition of how to handle guests, and that when a guest makes a request the guest expects a response, even if it's to say "Sorry, can't do it."

Just a sad, boring hotel. For fun go next door to Sedona Hotel.

Well, the breakfast was fine, and the bed was OK. But the room was just adequate -- poor enough that some members of our tour group went elsewhere. A few items: small, narrow room; shoddy linens; threadbare furnishings; noisy A/C.

The Mandalay Swan is like the ancient family pet that no-one can quite bring themselves to put down. The incontinence (toilets that refuse to flush), the mess on the carpets (unchanged, quite possibly for decades), the deafness (staff unable or unwilling to hear), the cataracts (windows in need of a clean) and the smell (an unrefined mix of mildew and cigarette smoke from guests long gone)...all the hallmarks of a once loved friend.

But make no mistake, there is no charm to be had here. The hotel is old and no-one really cares anymore. It smells, it's poorly maintained and charges like a wounded bull. Foreigners pay government mandated higher prices in Myanmar which makes this hotel exceptionally bad value for tourists. There are plenty of other options in Mandalay - I recommend using them.

This hotel was booked as a replacement by a local guide, and while nothing was terrible, it was fairly poor to average all around. The hotel itself and the room were both outdated, the beds over-used, and service mediocre. The pool was the nicest part of the hotel. Breakfast was decent.

The Swan is a good place to get a quiet night rest and enjoy a great food buffet in the morning with real coffee. The rooms are clean but a little dated and the two channel tv is small but it does the job, the bed is amazingly comfortable. The only lacking areas is the Internet which is $2+ an hour on a single shared computer. Although there is wireless in the lobby, the staff is hesitant to give the password.

It is currently very hot in Mandalay and using the pool would be nice but either the hotel or someone they allow has many daily swimming lessons going on and it's impossible to find a place to sit with parents sitting everywhere or even swim for that matter as the pool is pretty small and there is 20+ children involved in the lessons. We had a friend visit and she had to pay $5 to have no place to sit or swim.

There aren't many food options within a 5 minute walk from the hotel so if you like to try different things, be prepared to endure the heat.

Overall a good place to sleep, if they improve the pool situation, it would be infinitely better.

We only had a one night stay at this hotel in Mandalay but were very disappointed. We had left our trip booking rather late so the agent had trouble finding accommodation to fit our itinerary and as a result we felt lucky to get a room.
The hotel is old, and needs a lot of refurbishing or perhaps pull it down and start again! Our room although a good size was not very clean, the carpet was filthy, some power points did not work (we did not even try the TV) neither did the toilet properly flush.
The dining room was old but the staff pleasant and did what they could with what they had to work with; the food average. The reception staff were almost all young and not very professional.
We had an early start the next morning so it was arranged we would have a "breakfast box" which was not at reception on checkout and our guide twice had to follow up - ending going to the kitchen herself to get it.
