The hotel well deserves its position as Tripfinders' favourite hotel in Mandalay. The layout and rooms are ideal. The staff is efficient, helpful and friendly. It's a great place to return to after a day's sight-seeing in Mandalay.

We loved staying at the hotel by the red canal, graceful arrival, charming service, smiles all around. Excellent Indian restaurant, good breakfasts, juices, lunches, and good location, close to the palace entrance. Very comfortable and charming. A good place to be based while exploring Mandalay and the surrounding areas. The cocktail hour was great fun and unexpected. Staff very helpful and friendly.

Perhaps the standard in the city is lower, but my expectation was higher. I did not find a luxury hotel, nor service of excellence. I would say that a three star hotel is accurate rating. The staff was friendly, but inefficient. Internet pretty poor and food in the restaurant Indian; OK, but not great nor local.

We stayed 2 nights at this hotel. The service was always wonderful. We really enjoyed the free cocktails in the evening which gave us the opportunity to meet other guests and swap travel stories. We would be happy to recommend it.

Despite being a fairly pricey option (it is a resort hotel), The Spice Garden is the best and most authentic Indian food in Mandalay, hands down, and I've tried them all. Their menu is extensive to cater for the varying tastes of fickle hotel guests, and while I've never ventured to try the "European food" or other Asian varieties here, I can't imagine they would hold a candle to the Indian cuisine you can get here. So my advice -- stick with the Indian dishes. There's an Indian in the kitchen and he knows what he's doing! Only one complaint - the gulab jaman I had for desert was cold as if it had been hastily defrosted.

Lovely service and atmosphere - it's too bad we couldn't sit outside that day at one of the tables in the garden as it was pouring rain. It would be nice to see them make more of an effort to reach out to the community -- the prices are restrictive, and keep us from coming very often. However, the owner did go out of his way to help us out when we asked, and that is much appreciated! In summation, we'll be back, and are happy to recommend it for Indian food if you're willing to dish out quite a lot more than for an average Mandalay meal. The "excellent" ranking here is for the food and service, not the price.

If my review were based on the staff, it would easily be five star. They know how to always be available, but not intrusive. Their English is excellent, and they will do anything in their power to make your stay better. Very well done.

The extra amenities are also nice: a bottle of sparkling wine upon arrival, a free 30-minute foot massage, afternoon coffee and snacks, and evening cocktails. They're little things, but they are what make it stand out.

The rooms, however, are very average and a bit dated. They still have old school TVs that take up an entire desk. Couldn't they splurge on flat screens? The shower is decent, but the edges were cracking. And the balcony is just uncomfortable. The bench doesn't have a cusion, and is warped. Don't expect to hang out on the balcony.

The most annoying thing was the internet, or lack thereof. Supposedly the entire hotel has wifi. In practice, it may have worked for five minutes of my entire stay. They require you to use codes from a paper slip they hand out at the front desk, i.e. you can't just connect with a password and stay connected. Super. Annoying.

All in all, I might stay here again. But only if they update their rooms and fix the internet.

Room Tip: Stay in a room in the bottom floor overlooking the stream.

This hotel is very nice , clean decorated with taste. I was not expecting this . The restaurant was a hidden treasure , the Indian choices of the menu are great ! The staff went out of thier way to make your stay relaxing. It is hidden on one of Mandalays side streets, but nice and safe.
