“Execellent staff”
Reviewed 8 June 2009

What impressed to me the most in our stay in the hotel was the excellent quality staff. They are very kind all the time, and they are ever disposed to help you with a smile. Most of them speak a good english.

The Hotel has been created like a small Oasis in the city center of Mandalay. The comfortability of the rooms and, specially, the pool make me you feel at home.

Thank to all the members of the staff and the general manager.

Tucked away in a quiet side street is this really pleasant modern hotel. Décor is stylish without being lavish and the rooms are immaculately presented. Small pool area, not what you’d use for a day by the pool but then I don’t imagine anyone is in Mandalay for sunning themselves. Quiet and pleasant for cooling off at the end of the day though. Did not get to use the restaurant as used one local for the evening meal ( left out of front of hotel about 400 metres, good food, pleasant place ) For the couple of days the average person stays in Mandalay sightseeing it’s a very comfortable quiet oasis in a busy city.

This lovely boutique hotel is located a 10-15 minute walk from the Palace. The grounds are beautiful and there is a freeform pool. The staff are the most helpful, friendly, and accommodating that you will find anywhere!!

I booked a Rakhine suite (they are actually rooms not suites) but was upgraded to a Chan suite, as it was the off-season and the hotel had few guests (internet special $60/N + 20% tax). The Rakhine suite is actually larger but it does not have a balcony (but who sits out on a balcony in 30+ degree temperatures), though it has a separate work desk – you may want to take a look at both before accepting an upgrade. All rooms come with, believe it or not, good internet access, though the in-house tech will have to set up your computer. For those without a laptop the hotel has 2 computers for guests use. The Chan room is small but well appointed with in-room safe, A/C, fridge, ample hanging space for clothes but limited drawers, coffee/tea making facilities, TV with about 100 satellite channels (many English), desk (thought the overhead lighting is poor) and chair, plus two armchairs, and a lovely bathroom with a tub and shower (with shower curtain) that has inconsistent hot water. Little extras include fresh fruit plate on arrival, 2 bottled water per day, towel change each time you leave the room, wet face cloth and drink upon return from site seeing.

The hotel has a backup generator which is much needed in this city of frequent power interruptions. A warning if you stay over certain full moons during the year. From a nearby monastery there is chanting, not unlike the imams in Turkey and Egypt, except it is not just five times a day for 15 or 20 minutes, it is literally constant (i.e., 24 hours a day) for 5 straight days. Bring earplugs if you want to sleep.

Breakfast is included and consists of a different fresh juice each morning (strawberry, watermelon, melon, etc), tea or coffee, toast and rolls, fresh fruit plate and choice of eggs accompanied by grilled tomato, French fries, and a wiener. The restaurant serves primarily Indian food but also offers some Burmese and European dishes – their thick crust pizzas are very good. Portions are large and prices reasonable.

The room is exclusive of 20% tax and service charges. The hotel accepts CC but charges an extra 10%. As with most hotels in Myanmar, the hotel will book flights, etc. Initially they “offered” airport pickup for $35, but when I replied that I would make my own arrangements, they countered with $18 for the 45 km taxi ride.

I highly recommend this hotel.

We booked two suites throgh our agency and had a confirmation with us. When we arrived we got two dark rooms -not suites - wthout window but a door to an outdoor shower. We explained, that this did not at all meet our expectaions. The staff transfered us to two other rooms at the ground floor with a small terrace. Still no suite, not even a junior suite, since this was just one room ,but very nice and big enough . We were told ,that all roooms are called suites, so this is the local version of an all-suite hotel.
This is the only unpleasant experience we had. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. Everybody tried to give the maximum , we hardly found a better service in any hotel we have visted worldwide. This is a place we were very sorry to leave , we had after the little trouble at our arrival unforgettable days. Thank you for the help with the internet, thank you for the perfect service in the restaurant, tank you to the whole staff !

Stayed at the Hotel by the Red Canal for two nights in mid-February. We were lucky enough to get the Shan Suite on the 3rd floor with a great balcony overlooking the pool. The best view in the hotel. Other rooms either have an unusable balcony or a view of the uninspiring street.

We had issues with hot water and the staff were initially dismissive of our concerns but eventually this was fixed. Our room had a bed with one side against the wall so the rooms aren't huge but the bathrooms are great and the food is excellent. The chef is clearly Indian and the samosas simply delicious. Web access is free and not bad. The pool is great and the staff charming.

The Red Canal opposite the hotel is neither red nor that impressive but the hotel's location is very central.

This is a very good hotel and represents great value for money

We stayed at the Red Canal Hotel for two nights in January. What impressed us was the attitude of the staff towards making guests comfortable. We were first shown a room (no. 201) that had a view of the pool. The room was very nice, but was a bit near the generators (apparently almost every establishment and restaurant has a generator because electricity blackouts are fairly common). Although not loud, we could hear the humming and were concerned that it might affect our sleep at night. The staff at the hotel were most helpful and suggested we see other rooms at the back which were further away from the generators. This we did and decided on room 206.

The room was pleasant and adequate. There was a small balcony. Good linen and comfortable bed. TV carried many satellite channels. For some reason many of the satellite channels have to be re-set from time to time by hotel staff (with the exception of Bloomberg). This they did promptly and willingly.

24 hour free internet access was available to guests. There were two laptops for guests' use as well. The attendants in the internet room were most helpful, not just with assisting guests in using the internet, but also with advice on where to go and what to see. A young guy with a nice smile (who wore a small ruby ring and who I am told drives a motorbike) was particularly friendly and helpful.

Food at the Indian Restaurant (part of the Red Canal Hotel) was very good and authentic. The staff there must work long hours because we were served by a nice tall man at dinner time (when we left it was around 9:30 and many other diners were still there) and the next morning at 7am we saw him serving guests at breakfast.

We were offered cooked breakfasts both mornings. Eggs, cooked to order, sausages, bacon, grilled tomatoes, selection of breads and pastries, juice and coffee. All very nice. Only thing is that they did not have sugar substitutes (Equal, Splenda).

The Red Canal Hotel is close to the Royal Palace (about 2 km from hotel to the Palace I would say), the Schwenandaw Temple and the Kuthodaw Temple. As well as the Atumashi Temple which we visited briefly (see my Trip Report posted in Tripadvisor). It is also within walking distance to 27th street where there are a number of eateries, some quite good.

What makes the Red Canal Hotel special is their friendly, warm and helpful staff. Nothing seemed to be too much trouble for them, and service was always with a smile.
