“Lovely Town, Lovely Guesthouse”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 February 2014

After a few rough nights of lodging in northern Laos we were quite tickled to arrive at the Alounsavath. The staff couldn't have been nicer and the rooms were comfortable and bright. Over the five days of our visit we stayed in a downstairs room (front with balcony) and an uptairs room (also front with balcony). Both were good but the upstairs offers more privacy. It was great to sit out on our balcony and watch the sun set over the Mekong. Breakfast was served across the street at the family's restaurant. The choices were good as was the quality.

The Guesthouse is located on the Mekong side of the peninsula and we found this to be a convienient spot. It was an easy walk to anywhere in town yet it was quiet at night.

Room Tip: Upstairs with balcony is the way to go.

My husband and I stayed at this hotel recently with another couple. We originally booked the two first floor rooms overlooking the Mekong, which are certainly the pick, so go for rooms 1 and 2 if you can. For various reasons we had to stay longer, plus returned there after a trip up north, so I ended up staying 8 nights in total in 4 different rooms. Room 7 is downstairs on the street, a good size with a balcony and not a bad room. Rooms 3 and 4 upstairs are at the back and smaller with no real windows, but cheaper and fine.
We found Phon and her family to be friendly, extremely helpful and attentive. The breakfast in her brother's cafe on the river (included) was generous and the rooms were spotlessly clean and very well located. We were completely sold when on my friend's birthday a lovely fresh decorated birthday cake arrived in her room courtesy of the hotel. Thank you Phon for making our stay in Luang Prabang even more special.

After two years, the same well run guesthouse and enjoyable days in Luang Prabang are packaged here. the addition of a full day restaurant with the kindess staff made each day perfect. The calmness of the town, and serene feeling will always be remembered.

Room Tip: Choose a front room, but not when I'm there!!!

For our booking we trusted our guide book and didn't check on trip advisor ahead. We checked in our room (with AC and fan on) and saw that we had a twin bed: our mistake when booking
So we were shown into the double bed room, with AC and fan off: it smelled moldy thus we decided to take the first room (in the following days we realised that also this room was smelling moldy if the AC was not switched on).
The towels on our beds were both stained. They apologised and changed them.
As for the rest it was clean.
Our room was on the first floor on the back side with two windows: one opening on a wall, the other on the backyard with towels hanging on a laundry cord.
The staff was kind and helpful.
If going back to LP again we would look for something else.

You should choose the river view room. There are only two river view rooms in this guest house. It is situated at the good location and easily to walk around town. The restaurant "Phakdee" is across of this guest house and where you can have your breakfast close to the Mekong River.

First time in Luang Prabang, we chose this little guest house based on many positive reviews. We arrived at the hotel late at night and were given a "family room" right off the reception desk. When we walked into the room, my daughter complained about funny smell in the room (it was musty, moldy smell) and they turned on exhaust fans in the room and the bathroom. The next morning I woke up thinking it's raining outside. Soon I discovered that all windows were blocked by walls and there was no windows in the room. That explained the exhaust fan in the room. We were told all family rooms were at the 1st floor. Since the owner's family was also using the 1st floor lobby as "family room/living room" for their own family, it also made our room right next to the reception desk very noisy, too. We were trying to sleep and could here TV blasting, babies crying, computer games and loud conversations right outside of our room.

The next day, we found another hotel and moved. All our clothes smelled musty by then. The rooms at the 2nd floor are probably OK with windows and balconies but do not take any room at the 1st floor.

One thing we noticed was that (at least in Luang Prabang) almost all Guest houses, hotels, shops and restaurants we've visited had "tripadvisor" choice award plaque prominently displayed. Made us wonder how difficult it was to become "tripadvisor" choice. We will take "tripadvisor"'s advice with more grain of salt from now on and definitely check other website as well.

We spent 2 nights here & just loved it, with a balcony overlooking the Mekong River & life going by on the street below. It was spotlessly clean & very comfortable. The staff who were mostly the Family who owned it were just gorgeous. Would definitely stay there again. Great value!

Room Tip: I think the only rooms are on the second floor & they were perfect.
