“Comfortable, Quiet Stay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 March 2014

We stayed at Villa Ban Lakkham in Luang Prabang for 4 nights.
Rooms are a little small, but the hotel is in a very quiet area one street off the main road and with views across the Namkhan River which runs into the Mekong half a mile away.
The restaurant is on the river side of the road directly opposite.
The hotel is older, like most in Luang Prabang and more a family style hotel or guest house. Walls are paper thin and need to run the ceiling fan all night to keep the mozzies at bay. But it works.
Bed is hard but reasonably comfortable, bathroom is small but functional, with good hot water and pressure.
The room we stayed in has a nice balcony overlooking the water, the street is very quiiet overnight and in the morning. Room is a little dark with a lot of heavy dark wood, AC is OK. Has a room safe, tea and coffee facilities, refrigerator and wardrobe, plus room to hanh more clothes. Need to climb the stairs to get to rooms, but just one floor. Tours are a bit expensive. Much cheaper to organize direct on the streets.
Some staff speak reasonable English and others not so good, but they are all very nice and helpful.
Only one street from the main drag with restaurants, monastries, tour places, night market etc.
Luang Prabang is a very pretty city, locked in the French Colonial past. Plenty to do in surrounding area, 60 odd monastries, waterfalls etc.
Breakfast is included in the package bit we ate at the French Bakehouses where the French bread as pastries are as good as France. Food in a variety of Restaurants is very good.
All in all the Villa Ban Lakkham proved to be a very comfortable, reasonably priced, quiet place to stay, close to all the attractions of Luang Prabang. It is also more traditional than a lot of the other places we stayed. Take your shoes off at the entry

Room Tip: room with balcony and river view

The literally meaning of Villa Ban Lakkham is “House in the village of the golden pillar” and is located in quieter area of town. The rooms comprises of riverfront views and their own private balcony. The rooms also have a mini bar, TV, free Wifi etc. The staffs are really lovely and helpful. The atmosphere of Villa Ban Lakkham is very relaxing. You can hear flurries of butterflies and birds chirping. The breakfast was exquisite. I would highly recommend it for someone who loves calm and serene place. If you are a nature loving person then you should definitely pay a visit to Villa Ban Lakkham.

This hotel from the outside looks very much like a lot of other hotels in Luang Prabang dark wood etc.It is on the quite side of town.
The room that we had(no 4) was dark but this was due to the room being made of the dark wood but with all the lights on it was just about light enough(it would have been a bit lighter if the dud bulb had been replaced that we told them about at the begining of our stay ie 7 days but it wasn't),also the room was furnished with stuff that was pretty useless ie a coat stand, a wardrobe that was so small you could fit very little in it, bamboo shelf unit that was taken up with kettle etc, so all in all not a lot of storage space if you are her for more than say three daysalso when we dropped some water on the floor and wiped it up the cloth was black we told the staff and they said it was because it was dust from outside but to us this proved that the floor wasn't mopped each day.
Now to the bathroom, at first it looked very impressive big ,multi jet shower but when we put the light on the first night you could see a film of dust on the tiles from floor to ceiling hand marks etc from other guests, then when we used the shower it was only possible to use the hand held part because the water pressure was so weak and then most of the time it was very weak, also the grouting in the tiles was very mouldy( see pics if i have been able to attach them). We reported the walls etc to the staff who came to see and they said it was because of the dust but i said no it shows that the bathroom has not been cleaned properly for some time between guests, they did clean the walls but could do nothing about the shower or the grout as ithink this bathroom needed a complete re-furb and the owners had wasted money on instlling the fany shower.
This next point is i think is somthing i made the owners aware of by e-mail whilst i was there and the manager Mr Ono tried his hardest to put right. It is about the family who live next door to the hotel( best described as scum/yobs).On our first night there music started at about 4-30pm and went off at 3-00am!!! i told Mr Ono who told me it was the son(age early twentys) of the house and that the parents where away so he was having a party and that he had connections with the authorities. The next night was new years eve so we expected some music but not from 8-30am to 1-30am. The next morning at breakfast (you eat it across the road) music started again( the scum have what they try to pass off as a restuarant also across the road from there rough house next door) when we got home from being out at about 4-00pm it was still going on i again asked Mr Ono if he could do anything and fair play to the lad(he is about 23 years old) he went over and spoke to them(at this time there is a group of about 15 people there) they turned the music down and when he was about 3 yards away on it went again he looked so dispondent i could have cried for him because it was very brave of him to confront this scum on his own.
Sorry about going on about this point for so long but i think it is a valid point if you are thinking of booking this hotel and the owners have not some how remided this matter. By the way the owners never did get in touch with me so please don't call me on a reply after this report is published.
Now to the good bits the breakfasts were good and the staff were some of the most simley Laoasians we met and Mr Ono did his upmost to try and rescue our stay at the hotel due to it being spoiled by the scum took us on a day trip in his own time and even got us a nights refund from Agoda, whithout Mr Ono our tfirst trip to Laos would have been ruined completely.

You really do not have much of view of the river. The hotel is on a noisy street, then there is an outdoor restaurant, then the river. You may be able to see a little bit of the river from your room. Rooms one thru eight are together and you can shut out a lot of the outside noise if you close the outside wood doors. However, the walls are very thin and you can hear everything inside. The top floor rooms, numbers one to four are much quieter.
Food is very good, staff is friendly and helpful and location is very good.

Room Tip: Avoid room 9. It is a stand alone room over the office and gets all the traffic noise from two dire...

Our visit did not start well. Our pre-arranged airport pick up was 30 minutes late in arriving, the room safe did not work and the room toilet was blocked. It took almost 24hours for the toilet to be mended during which time we had to use the hotel public toilet and we eventually had to change rooms ( when one became available) To be fair the manager did give us a very generous discount of the cost of our room for our 3 day stay.
The hotel is situated in a very pleasant part of the town and is very close to the main attractions of the old city. The outdoor restaurant just over the road, occupies a stunning position overlooking the river and serves an excellent breakfast. Our room was on the first floor and was of a reasonable size though the huge bed took up a lot of space. We had a large balcony with fine river views.
Leaving aside our initial problems, we thought the hotel represented excellent value for money though in small ways our experience could have been so much better. The room had a fridge but it was completely empty. If they did not want to use it as a mini bar at least put the room bottled water in it so it was cold. The bathroom was amply stocked with shampoos etc but there was no place to hang a wet towel as the towel rail had been taken down but not replaced. There was tea and coffee facilities but only green tea bags on offer and the instant coffee sachets included milk and sugar which for us was undrinkable.
The Villa Ban Lakkam is a very good hotel. With a little bit thought and application it could be an excellent hotel

After spending one night on the ground level we asked to be moved to second floor with balcony.
We found noise level and lack of privacy on the ground level. Second floor was much better. We found the room to be very dark due to type of wood/finish on walls. The shower was warm at varied times of day. Wi Fi was good. Location was very good, walking distance to one of the main streets. We had breakfast across the street and that was a lovely setting. Breakfast was a set menu and was adequate to start your day. Nice touch to have Tuk Tuk available to pick you up at the airport. Also bikes were free and you could ride for miles, very easy with very few hills. Staff very friendly/helpful.

Room Tip: Second floor with balcony a must

Stacks of character Villa Ban Lakkham we just loved the view while having breakfast, the monks crossing the river in the distance, little boats fishing, although across the road this was no problem. Small coal fires were placed under our feet to keep us warm on the early mornings as turned a little cool, then heated up by 10am. Staff very friendly, good breakfast including the local cuisine. Balcony a real winner. Comfortable room, with everything you need, being an old building you could hear now and then a little noise although this was no major problem as other important points made up for it. We did hear a lot of noise outside one evening in one of the restaurants opposite once, but it was a party and could happen anywhere. So easy to walk into town, and for the early rise for seeing the Monks. The free tuk-tuk worked really well, available for trips around town & bikes were always available. We stayed five nights to relax after Cambodia. It is located in the quieter area of town, also close for boat trips up Mekong.
